"Something's amiss in this pastel abyss" - you've got a perfect protagonist in Smear. This is such a wonderful and promising first chapter! I enjoyed the episodes well enough on their own, but this really ties them together in such a cohesive way and adds much needed flow. In my eyes, SAFE MODE's shaping up to be as mind-altering and breath-taking as Interface was, even with this series' more measured pace (which is not a drawback at all, I love it a lot).

Smear is blessed with his three mouths, and always the most interesting words to say. So humble. Every line tells so much about his character.
@Lucernam
@Lucernam Жыл бұрын
It feels like Lana is avoiding problems and Smear is intentionally trying to find them. Smear says they need to quarantine a threat, but Lana is just concerned with weathering the storm. Lana looks like she's genuinely concerned about Smear after he crashes his car, and after he rebuffs her quips thereafter, and it feels like she's trying to goad him into skipping the road trip. She talks about how Snooze Button can fast travel like its an easy thing, but he's intentionally doing the hard thing. Smear wouldn't have seen the "ping pong ball" or the crashing plane if he didn't take the long way around.

The right balance of philosophical horror and existential comedy is what makes this take so fun. Plus those animations are looking amazing, I love the tanks, and esp your walk animations have improved so much it's fantastic. Good work, man

It's a pretty wicked tank, looks like a ram 2, or maybe an m4a5? Nice detail on the drive sprockets and bogey wheels. Anyway, been here a while and loved this, and all of his work. The, "I'm laughing". While being morbidly angry was hilarious.

With all the praise for the animation and the plot, it just occured to me how much I love the voice acting as well. I almost know the first episode by heart because I love the dialog between Smear and the admin so much and the acting is part of that. Same with every scene Lana is in. I can't wait to see where this series is going next and whom else we are going to meet.

It took an unholy amount of rewatches before my eye caught it but holy crap, Mischief's face was in that sun. I knew I saw a smile before. That's so delightfully creepy and ominous.
@marishiten5944

So, where are we going with this? Greetings is clearly there, in the Interface and it makes reference to the blimp/baby/dirigible that was the Interface. So, Greetings has created the Interface as a way to not only harness "clean energy" utilizing souls of the dead to be of service in the material world, but he's also created a pseudo paradise/afterlife in the ephemeral. So, like SOMA. Without the clean energy. And with Mischief being also in the Interface at this point, he's clearly the virus/threat that's preventing the Interface from rebooting in normal mode and continuing to absorb the souls of the dead. Do these souls want to move on to the next plane of existence? I mean, they didn't really have a choice but to be absorbed by Mischief or the Interface to begin with. Is this a natural vs. unnatural progression of souls argument? Is it going to be Mischief's goal to dismantle the Interface completely and release the souls trapped within while also freeing Heinrich's wife and daughter? If Mischief is a virus, why doesn't it just hijack a users ability to create and modify permissions and groups, give himself a user, elevate it for sudo, reboot the interface into console only mode, brute force root, then rm -r /*. It's binary and made of source code (it's not really source code though since the Interface is running, so it was clearly compiled. The source code itself is good reference, but it doesn't help with the production implementation) Why doesn't Greetings try to revert back to a sane build through smoketesting or regression testing? Kind of crazy he didn't have the foresight to smoke test his own firmware/software. Does he not have a repository for all his previous builds? You'd think since he designed and built the Interface, he'd at least have a local Git repo built.
@Monomiknose
@Monomiknose Жыл бұрын
I know it's too early to have an answer, but personally, I don't think Mischief or anyone outside of the agency Smear works for can work with the system directly. Not to get into a religious debate, but in our world, if there is a deity that created everything, the main difference between them and us(humans) is perspective. They have knowledge and access to an entirely different set of rules that allows them to do things beyond our own comprehension. Similarly, I think being a soul in the Interface limits your perspective, even if you understand that you're in a simulation you don't gain access to all the rules just by that alone. Mischief is probably at an even further disadvantage, having lived most of his existence outside of the world of technology. Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt he even knows what half that terminology you just used means. Also, as far as reverting a change goes, you gotta keep in mind that either the souls are being held here by the programming or have been digitized into processes themselves. With the former, it's important to remember that they've actually caught every loose spirit by the end of Interface, and by shutting down the program that binds them there, Greetings will reverse his own life's work by setting them free. If the later is the case, they can just "shut down" everyone along with the programming, but there's no one outside the Interface to help facilitate reversing the current version. It's probably incredibly tricky and dangerous to attempt to reverse the version from within. From our perspective, pulling from a repo is the easiest solution, but from the perspective of having to work within the program, it would likely be far easier and safer to find and eliminate the "virus" so you can repair the damage done. At least, that's all just what I think. Half the fun of these kinds of series is everyone having their own interpretation!

You kid but I imagine the technical papers for building something like the interface would be highly classified and obscured through many layers of secrecy. Think of the abuse if someone (like terrorists) got their hands on the technical documents that went into The Interface or the mechanical saccorhytus - and Greetings received his funding for much of this stuff through the United Nations counter-terrorism division. So the secrecy / security mindset would have been baked in from the start. It may be that there's no one left in the real world to access things that say, only Greetings himself could access.@@The_KingDoge
