Here is the blog post he was referring to Pakistan Studies; A reader Most of us have a claim to know the issues of our country; the history, challenges and solutions. The amazing thing however is that we cannot mostly tell the source of our opinions pushed as understanding, but that does not dissuade us from claiming to be experts. One young man however was an outlier. He simply asked me on social media on what to read about Pakistan’s history leading up to present. Many young people also ask about material for css often. The query got me thinking and also made me taking a good long look at my personal collection. What should one read to develop a basic but broad understanding? The list can be endless but what if I have to choose just twenty? One can start from as far back as 712 AD, Mohamamd Bin Qasim and so on. But early 18th century is more appropriate for having bearing on events of today. Raj Mohan Gandhi’s ‘Punjab; A History from Aurangzeb to Mountbatten’ forms a good base. Punjab of that time was pretty vast and the book provides a picture of post-Mughal Empire scene. Contrary to popular perceptions, the weakening of central authority provided more opportunities economically and socially. One comes across local rulers like Adina from Sharaqpur who was perhaps the first native King, and of course rise British which was a foregone conclusion with all the lost wars. The Empire’s version comes from ‘The Men who ruled India’ by Philip Mason, with stories of Clive and Cornwallis, Jacob and Abbot, and of course three Lawrence brothers. The empire was not all honey and roses, so recent revisionist critique by Shashi Tharoor, ‘An Era of Darkness ; British Empire’ in India will balance the colonial romance. The nineteenth century came with Fort William College, Civil Courts, English teaching and Urdu language. Yes indeed, the present day Urdu owes its rise to British. Ghalib had to purge his Diwan for simplicity and Sir Syed had to come forward to save both language and politics. Altaf Hussian Hali’s ‘Hayat-e-Jawed’ gives account of the great man, and many controversies of the era. The social history is found however in a novel. Shams-u-Rehman Farooqi’s ‘Kayee Chand Thay Sar e Asman’ is a treat of words ; Wazir Khanum embodying language, culture and history of the times. It is also published in English as The Mirror of Beauty. Thanks also to William Dalyrmple for ‘The Last Mughal, the fall of Dynasty, Delhi 1857’ for chronicling the upheaval later called with many names; sepoy mutiny, ghaddar and war of independence. Ayesha Jalal’s ‘Partisans of Allah ; Jihad in South Asia’ spans across two centuries and traces the roots of present day issues in the movements in first half of 19th century. The upheaval sealed the fate of both Muslim dynasties and East India Company. The new era was that of institution building and contests over claims of representation. Khalid Bin Sayeed’s ‘Pakistan; A Formative Phase 1857-1948’ and Ayesha Jalal’s ‘The Sole Spokesman; Jinnah, the Muslim League and the Demand for Pakistan’ are now considered textbooks on the subject. Aligarh will always hover over the independence movement and a recent Urdu book by Mukhtar Masood, ‘Harf-e-Shouq’ enlivens the place and the times. Quiad-e-Azam’s life is well recorded and received but bedside’s the Wolpert’s popular biography, the fresh take by Jaswant Singh in ‘Jinnah ; India partition Independence’ is a fresh take and surprisingly objective one on the life of our founder . In the political history, Ch Muhammad Ali has best chronicled the freedom struggle in ‘the Emergence of Pakistan’ while other version will come with Abu kalam Azad’s ‘India wins Freedom’-the Congress’s lens of looking at Independence and ‘Freedom at Midnight’ by Dominque Lapierre and Larry Collins, that of the British and specifically Mountbatten’s. The partition stories however will be incomplete without literary characters, the ghadriya and Toba Tek Singh which are quite well known.’Train to Pakistan’ by Khushwant Singh is equally poignant though not much discussed. Pakistan post-Independence has to be studied from the perspectives of politics, economy and constitutional struggle. Hamid Khan’s ‘Constitutional and Political History of Pakistan’ is the ready reference as, is ‘Issues in Pakistan Economy’ by S.Akbar Zaidi. The Issues is now in its third edition and gives a holistic analysis of economy including forgotten issues like land reforms and not so flattering account of our middle class as ‘rent seeking, conservative and regressive’. Dr Ishrat Hussain further traces the ills associated with ‘the economy in Pakistan; An economy of an elitist State’. The monumental event of separation of East Pakistan is pretty much covered but two books by Siddique Salik, ‘Witness to Surrender’ and story of captivity in Urdu, Haman yaran dozakh which get one thinking a lot. Last few decades have been auto-biographies galore. Most are nothing less than personal aggrandizement without being apologetic. I would however recommend ‘Jinnah to Zia ; failure of law of necessity’ by Justice Muneer. The founder of doctrine of necessity is unexpectedly candid and refreshingly lucid. There is a whole market of books developed recently covering Pakistan as a whole. Most of these are by western authors for western audiences with aim to disentangle a crisis ridden country. Barring few exception, most are personalized, impressionistic and stereotypical. These are easy to find and easy to read so I will skip these and will recommend one by a prolific Pakistani researcher and academic Dr Ilhan Niaz. ‘The Culture of Power and Governance of Pakistan 1947-2008’ goes to the bottom of our patronage state and division of power in the name of governance. My recommendations, limited to twenty by constraint of space, have been personal and not at all exhaustive. The aim has been to highlight the basic but varied books. It is rather an eclectic mix and will perhaps be a motivation to explore more focused and specialized ones.
