This is my senior year, I thought it would be fun again to be one of the very few UMEA audition videos on KZbin! I hope I place well!

Great tone! Is that a King 2341 tuba? My high school uses King tubas, and they have great intonation and tone quality. The only bad part is the accumulation of ridiculous amounts of condensation, resulting in having to rotate the horn a few times. Interesting to hear a tongued chromatic scale - I assume UMEA stands for Utah Music Educator's Association? Out here in North Carolina, we have to slur ours (unfortunately). Keep up the great playing.

Hey man, thanks for the kind words! This is actually an Eastman EBB534, but yes it is a copy of the famous King 2341 tuba! And yes lol, it does get quite condensated and sometimes its really hard to find! Yes, this is Utah, and they are really loose with their requirements. The chromatic can be tongued or slurred, but I can see why they would want you to slur it. I hope you’ve made it into your all state!

Ah, the good ol’ Eastman. They make us play seven major scales too. I still have to go through county and district band, but hopefully Ill pull through and make state again. Also I liked that video about “sacking” low Fs. I’ll use that term now

Im a tuba player from Pennsylvania, and to make states we had to go through at least 3 auditions, and I didn't earn a seat through my regional band so I had to earn it through orchestra where they only took the first chair tuba player from each district to the orchestra circuit.

Sure thing! Here are some things to think about: -Think about the vowels you use when you play, your open vowels will produce that deep and richer sound, just work with this on trial and error -Slot each note correctly. The slot is the most clear, open, and resonant part of that note on the instrument. Do pitch bends for trouble notes to find the slot -Constantly record yourself and think about a professional’s sound coming from basic equipment and try to emulate that. Dont forget to listen what sounds you hear both below and above the bell!! -Get really good at listening to every level of player, and listen to what separates the amateurs from professionals! NO MUSICIAN CAN ONLY PROGRESS PAST THEIR ABILITY TO HEAR! Hope this helps!
