I'd never heard this beautiful Leonard Bernstein work in the concert band medium. Great performance of this challenging piece!!

I've said it before, many times, that this West Side Story is/was the best Broadway musical EVER thanx to the incredible music of Leonard Bernstein!

Our horn player in the 70's got sick just before the performance. I was familiar with the part, playing the trombone solo in the jazz band the same semester. Director looked at me and said can you do it? Transposed up from high D to E. After the concert, a gentleman came up and said great job. you sound just like Alan Kaplan. It took me many years of research to find any recordings of him playing. Tracked him down at a music convention. Had him listen to the recording. Looked at me and said damn that was an E, I only played a D. Got a good chuckle.

I'm in 8th grade and doing this amazing piece at my high school band. It's certainly a challenge but will sound great when perfected.

Imagine my surprise when I get my music, and I see that I'm playing a piece with 800+ measures. The piece sounds pretty good, though!

Timing seems really disjointed... Must be hard to hear each other on this stage... Seems like a common theme for this group. Lots of gorgeous solo playing... Xylo solo...oops...

Having played Hill many times, including some with the Symphony Band, I can tell you that there isn't a finer acoustic hall anywhere in the world. The interesting part for performers is that there is no ceiling on the stage to reflect sound at you after you hear it directly from the other player. The University built the facility in 1903. The seating capacity is 3,538 which at the time of construction, was more than the student population as well as the town's population. Albert Khan was the architect.

In my personal opinion, lifeless. But opinions are like mixtapes, no one wants to hear them.

The Other Dude I totaly agree, the problem comes from de chef I think. And it's so imprecise, they aren't paying together, due to the chef too...

Well, Lenny wrote it for orchestra. Strings represent the heart-forces (as winds do the head, and percussion the will, roughly put). So in some places, winds can´t deliver what is needed, or meant by the composer, respectively. That´s probably what you´re missing.
