Umidigi Bison Smartphone, Built Like A Tank! - Review

So far I love it. I work construction exclusively outdoors half the year, and after the Rome X finally died after 6 years this season, I was impressed enough to try their "sport" version for extra durability. I still got the extra silicone case and glass screen/camera protectors; I'm not brave enough to drop it on concrete intentionally. I don't think it will be as repairable as the Rome X due to the water proofing, but that's the trade-off between the two, as well as the audio being slightly muffled from the water proofing, again, an inevitable trade-off. But for having to work outside regardless of conditions, I think it's worth it. Of course, this opinion might change after this coming season, but I guess I'll find out.

This was a good review of Umidigi Bison. I saw some other reviews where the phone was submerged in water, but didn't let the phone dry completely to get the sound back to original. So it sounded all weird like that, but at least I'm glad you pointed that out you got the sound working normal again!

@@Fred_Raimer I see. Sorry you had a bad experience with Umidigi company. I have a Umidigi smartphone, an older model and it's about a year old now but it works pretty good. Not had any issue with it so far.

This was my VERY BIGGEST fear when I dropped my phone (also rugged, waterproof) under water. At first I thought that I broke it! =)) But after couple of hours I realized how wrong was I!!! It's probably good cuz it is certified waterproof and the ports had to be working after the tests. So I would say the ports should be fine

I have this phone. I bought a cover for the phone jack and the usb port. I tried this under water and one thing I notice after you got this out from he water the sound from the speaker is a bit weird. but when its fully dry the sound will back to normal again.

@@galuhrichata6148 I can't really say it's worth buying for long last use. 1. You better make sure you charge em while the jacks are fully dry if it was being use under water. 2. It may look like it's fully armored but if the impact of drop will hit that camera, u will have to worry where to replace the camera cover glass. I Flicked it with my fingers and it's pretty thin. 3. If you empty battery it, then u plugged for charging- (in my case, takes time to turn on) it's freaking hot. I could flatten my clothes with it. (No exagg base on experience) 4. Others experienced screen flickering. 5. First charged, ur phone felt like an electric iron (before the update) 6. I can't say it's really a rugged phone because (camera glass is thin. It's weird that users bought extra casing to protect the phone. So am I .. I had to buy the type c and earphone jack cover. 7. I don't intentionally put them on water but it did sunk during flood while the water is right above my knees inside the house. Though it's still alive (I had to clean it with clear water as flood color is chocolate. Then blow dry it. ) The battery is legit it takes time to low batt. But I would buy oukitel rugged phone or doogee next time. 8. Careful with the sim lot. It may not need any pin to open it up, but if you removed it by force, the sim tray handle will easily break. As when I removed it, it looks like it was just glued or something not sure. Unlike other phone sim trays it's durable where the thing where its properly intact .. Not totally 100% worth buying. I'm still using this though as a backup phone for outdoors.

Purchased this rugged smartphone in 2020, and this device has not disappointed? This 1St gen Bison has the Sony cams (front and rear) which they only offered in the 1st gens? The build quality is rock solid and over-engineered? Fast forward to 2024, and this device still rocks hard? The 5000 mah battery is showing 95% health and last a very long, long time with heavy usage? I bought this phone as a back up rugged phone and really didn't have high expectations of it due to it's price range and my lack of knowledge of the brand itself, but I did do some research of the history of Umidigi just for good measure.....it turned out to be one of the most smartest investments I did, and I have nothing but positive things to say about the device and the brand? A rock solid device in my personal experience.

You love it? The 48Mpix cam is absolutely shit. Worst than my 10 years old 8Mpix Samsung. BATTERY is another shit. In heavy using lasts 2-3 Hours. In medium use 5 hours and in light use 10 Hours. That's worst than my 2800mAh old Samsung 🤦🏻‍♂️

I pre-ordered the Bison and agree with you on 99% of everything you said. I am a little irritated with the sound vibration as it is clearly heard when I'm shooting video or stories on instagram. If I have my bluetooth earbuds in then it isn't a problem obviously. The camera is pretty good but noticed the darker hue it has by default. Doesn't seem to be any way to control this. For the price I guess I really shouldn't be complaining too much. I think it is just so close to being completely comparable to flagships from other brands that they should have just gone the extra mile to make it so. Great video. Thank you for sharing it.

ive been in the market for a more robust phone, I really dont like the feel of the thicker cases but I have know broken 3 LG G6/7 phones since last summer lol. I dont use much data/youtube etc so a top quality screen and super fast isnt my priority. I need texting, decent for calls and the front speaker is a bonus. This might just do it. thanks for the review!

The video was informational and had great points. There is one point which seems all these videos are missing and that is which cell service the phones are compatible with. The phone can be the best in the world but it is just a brick if it has no cell service. Have viewed a lot of phones some indicating international etc.... but would like it to say specifically that you can use this phone on boost, cricket, T-Mobile, At&T etc.

Have you taken any sample photos with it? I just can't find many other than the ones by Umidigi. That is not a bad thing really but it is also nice to see other peoples' real world photos. I know I and many others are not professional photographers (it is not even a hobby of mine really).

The speaker issue after it being in water is completely normal, happens to most water resistant phones. It just takes about 5 or 10 mins to come back to normal

It appears to have Dark Mode but do the home screens loop? Is that search bar removable from the top of the screen? It also looks to be stock. I have an Umidigi F1 and couldn't take using it past 2 months before I put it back into the box and stuck it in a drawer.

Just a silly question since I don't have any experience with IP Certified phones, is it ok that the headphone jack port and the USB Type C ports do not have covers? wouldn't that affect the waterproofing of the phone? I mean getting water in those ports?

I have had 2 Umidigis, the biggest issue is that after 6 months you do not get any updates. My Power3 has the latest update ans the Android security patch is dated August 2020. Unfortunate.

@@waelshehata5376 ..I really like it..I got it because of, I had gotten sick, and now hard to hold stuff..so have dropped the phone 4 times so far..from 1.5m..on to hard floor..no damage..and the specs are very good for the price..only two areas a $1000, phone would be better for me..Low light photography, and fast graphics intensive gaming..but I have a 35mm camera and a powerful laptop, that I use.. so not needed on my phone..the build quality is as good as name brand android phones. Any other specific questions I'm here...

Been trying to figure this out myself - so far I think it's a dedicated SOS button with no options (found the options in the smart assistant menu, not smart key. I would like to change it from the SOS default as I don't like the idea of pocket dialing an emergency message to my contacts (it takes a 5 second press). Hopefully this is changed in future updates.

Be carefull!!! I just received Umidigi Bison 8/128 from Hong Kong shipment on 01 June 2021. After checking, i found that there was a problem with the call out(no sound in calls). Which is receiver does not hear the caller's voice. But the caller can hear the receiver's voice loud and clear.

It’s meant to take photos up close to the object in that mode. Move the camera close to what you want to take a picture of until it’s clear.

I have used it for two month now. It's just ok. Don't think it's rugged as it's not. The glass broke on mine and I think the design doesn't support covers for the phone. It was just a simple fall from less than a meter.. It tends to overheat quickly also. BBBBBUTTT for the money it's a great phone but it's not a tank.
