Everyone is arguing about which ending is better and Erika and all that, and I'm still sitting here after the 48(!!!) minutes of trauma of my life, when the VN told me to decide whether I want to believe in miracles/optimism and live a happy(happier?) life = pick magic, or be suspicious of everything/have pessimism, live in fear, but possibly not get emotionally fucked over by other people = pick trick. To be able to pick between two endings, in my opinion, were just to bring attention to what the story really wanted to tell us all. This in itself is more important than the endings themselves are. Btw, go Erika go!

Me and my bro read Umineko simultaneously. I'm more of a delicate, introvertic, emphatic person with soft heart that believes that everyone should have a chance and not be condemned. My bro is more straight-thinking, easy to judge, less empatic, prefering logic than emotion. I was literally traumatized, when at the end, I was the one that chosen Trick Ending, and he chosen Magic Ending. Once you find out about Amakusa's secret plans in Episode 6 tea party you can infer that Ange getting turned into a pile of meat in Episode 4 is an illusion being cast over her actual death at the hands of Amakusa.

This isn't obviously a question of "doing what you want with your property"; if you're the owner of a business conglomerate, you're responsible for so many people's jobs, stocks and a huge chunk of the country's economy; donating EVERYTHING is a very cruel thing to do when there have been people who have been working for you all your life and their livelihood depends on your company. And for Ange who had no interest whatsoever in running the business, giving the rights to Okonogi and trusting him was the best option.

It's not as much paranoia as it is pure, extreme pragmatism. There's a possibility that he might turn on her, and killing him eliminates that possibility, thus it is the right decision. Did you count how many worlds that this tales has been based upon? If discounting all of the world that is proven to be delusional - I counted that there are at least 4 worlds that being played here. 1. Human world where Ange did not jump off the building - she sold all of the Ushiromiya assets to Okonogi, lived as novel writer, and finally met with her brother and Ikuko after many decades passed. 2. Human world where she jumped off the building - she was saved by the net, travelled with Amakusa, met with Ikuko right away but never found her brother, shoot Amakusa and disappear. 3. Meta world - her inner world or spiritual world where her decisions in life took place. 4. Game board world - a world represent the Ushiromiya murder story in glass box that has been washed ashore. Do do you see this reasoning has taken every one?

e21big Well, you could look at it that way or you could think that there is more than one different world in Umineko. If you go back and watch the credits for Umineko Episode 1 you will see written clearly that EVERYONE in that world died, including Eva, which means that the first Episode takes place in a different world from Ange's, because as we know, in Ange's world, Eva survived the murders. So there are many different worlds, the one where the "Happy Ending" happens just happens to be the one that's looked at the most.

e21big I don't know about that. At the end of legend of the golden witch it says that this story was written by ushiromiya maria with a piece of her jaw in a bottle message. Handwriting analysis shows that it matched her handwriting. I consider it highly suspect that anyone could write this tale with their jaw missing unless it was forged by someone VERY close to Maria such as a person she would see every day... I wonder who that could be...

People need to keep in mind that the theory of cat box proposed by schrodinger is also to determine the probability of certain superposition of particle/wave. Meaning, even though we don’t know what’s inside the cat box until we open it, we can calculate the probability at which event is likely to occur. Ange, seeing the circumstance and the golf bag, has successfully calculated the probability of the event in the cat box.

Hmmm, EP 4 indicates that the henchmen were killed first (if Ange had went ashore). So are we to assume that Amakusa shot the Sumaderas and then walked up to Ange, shot her with the Tokarev and to set up the crime scene (run-on sentences ftw)? OR is it possible that Amakusa had a change of heart? Is it possible that he saved her after she rounded up the Sumaderas for him? This would kind of fit the theme in Ange's life/story arcs. She'd always make the worst possible choice for her own happiness. Committing suicide even though Battler is alive. Destroying her relationship with Eva. Denying any and all magic in her youth. Ignoring the heart in Beatrice's stories. "Killing one of the few people who ever cared for her (and appreciated her)." would fit right in, wouldn't it?

If Ryukishi wanted it to be a big choice on "how to live your life: pessimism into pragmatism at the cost of love vs. Seeing love that doesn't 'exist' to live a happier life at the cost of being tricked" then the two endings should have at the very least been given equal weight, or just not make the trick ending so overtly bad while the magic one overtly "good". There are pros and cons to both lifestyles and ways of thinking, but it seems Umineko is content in only showing the cons of trick and pros of magic.

I think part of the reason this ending is given less weight than the Magic ending is because Ange only gets in this position by continuing to chase a truth she doesn’t need. Choosing to live the loveless, pessimistic live is something she has been doing from the start. Ange is completely correct about everything here but had she chosen to live differently, (from the rooftop scene onward) there would’ve been no need for Okonogi to plan around her and kill her, and thus, she wouldn’t have to take the actions here. It’s worth noting that Erika has already taken that route and all it did was make her unhappy and alone

If this is the reader vs the author where the protagonists are your game pieces and the authors game peice is the antagonists. Wouldnt admitting that magic exists and beato is a witch be like losing the game? Yes you get a beautiful ending with the magic version and die and go to heaven but in the trick ending ange is still alive. She's just a little ummm maniacal. Her family doesnt come back but she finds out the truth and wins only it feels a little empty. I guess this is what ryukishi meant by umineko being a bitter story.

Turksemployee ShinRa See, I think this is the type of reasoning that Umineko is explicitly trying to criticize. The mystery genre is not about winning or losing by solving the mystery or not, it's about understanding the author and their messages in their work and then interpreting that message for yourself. In that sense mysteries are more akin to love than a battle. Remember what Willard keeps saying "don't neglect the heart". The author is not rejecting the truth here, but telling us to find the whole truth including both objective reality and subjective experience. In that sense not accepting Beatrice would be more like "losing" as you didn't grasp the whole truth or the "heart" of the mystery, thus not actually solving it. Ange's arc is the same way. When she claims that her family is alive regardless of the red truth or the lies of the world many people take this to mean that she's rejecting the truth. In reality its quite the opposite. She accepts that they have died and the fact that they were terrible people but also accepts the truth that they loved her and that she loved them, which is the complete truth. The fact that they are alive is also true as their memory still exist inside Ange. By finding the complete truth she is able to use it to move on. If you want proof look no further than the goats. The goats are representative of this kind of thinking, that we should win by finding the truth and "killing" the witch. The irony here is that not one them actually got close to solving the mystery as they completely fail to understand the why-dunnit. The three characters who actually solved the truth, Willard, Battler and Erika, each to some degree understand the importance of the "heart" of mystery (though Erika chooses to ultimately ignore it, a choice that is reflected by Ange in this ending).

Umineko is the visual novel equivalent of Midsommar. In the beginning, you know that the witches are downright fucked up for toying with peoples' lives, especially Beatrice who fakes feeling bad about it and betrays you. We watch Beatrice essentially mindbreak and manipulate Battler to the point where he completely forgets about all of that and sides with her. As this happens, the audience is also manipulated into siding with Beatrice using the same tactics. And what do the fans say if you challenge this, suggesting it isn't a happy ending? "Without love, it cannot be seen."

It could have been either one, we'll never know. Of course we're more inclined to believe Ange possibly because of the scene before where the outcome she predicted did happen (though she "killed" all the Sumadera hit men with the stakes in that one), but we can still believe in paranoia. But it doesn't matter because we can never know what happens once the last lock of the catbox has been closed forever.

I don't like either ending and no one could really say they found out what really happened no matter how close they actually are. Welp, I could either say it's no use in guessing what happened to the cat in the box, but it's simply better to guess. Though the box is locked and can't be opened simply because the one that has locked it refuses to open it... I'll simply move on knowing my theory can be true. Damn I wish I said this 2 years or maybe 3 years earlier. And ofc no ones gonna get a black and white/straight forward answer and every hint left behind is only going to make you think more bc it fits well with such vague endings with either being the truth or neither. I think this ending is more like an extra that confirms some theories about EP 4 if anything. I wouldn't call it realistic, expecially considering the core message Umineko took 8 episodes to tell. I also wouldn't say the magic ending showed what people wanted to see. I mean, a lot of people raged about the fact it didn't really openly explain what happened in Rokkenjima.

***** Sure it's more "realistic," but it also spits in the face of everything the author wanted to project in his story.This ending was more or less written by the author to confirm how many people reading it really didn't give a rat's ass about the story and characters, and just wanted answers. I wouldn't consider this ending better written at all, since it purposely throws everything the story was building up to at the wayside, outright changes characterization in order to have a "LOL TROLL" ending, reveals that the Metaworld does exist (Despite this being the "Magic isn't real!" ending,) and doesn't bring any closure to half of the story. The Magic Ending didn't show what people wanted to see at all, and most of Episode 8 was mocking the fanbase. (Anyone familiar with the Umineko fanbase knows that the majority of them HATE Episode 8 with a passion, and like Funchal said, most hated the ending because the truth was never exposed in black and white.)

***** I think the author is trying to say that truth isn't always needed, sometimes what people need is lies, or 'embellishments' as Virgillia put it, or 'Magic', because the heart matters too. That was what Battler trying to say to Ange. Even Dlanor A. Knox and Willard H. Wright, who denies witches and magics, accept that 'heart matters too'. In this trick ending, Ange reached the truth behind everything but I think she wouldn't be able to live happily even after knowing the truth, similar to how Furudo Erika is right now. That is why I prefer the magic ending, the magic ending has the 'love' that the trick ending lacks.

I don't believe in this ending. Amakusa seemed to be quietly against Ange going here, as you can tell from Okonogi reminding him not to go soft over the phone, and also from his little bit about "becoming a child soldier". As we can see in the actual conflict between Ange and Sumadera, Ange and her bodyguard were actually working together. When she said "shoot" after having a gun pulled on her in that exchange, it wasn't a dare, she was talking to Amakusa, who was watching over her from afar. For all the planning Amakusa did, and for all his value as a soldier of fortune, I don't believe he'd be stuck speechless just because some gloomy girl pulled a gun on him. He had absolutely nothing to say despite there being easy ways to at least attempt to explain yourself? Nonsense. Even if you don't believe in magic, this is the ending for people who have learned nothing.

While it seems like nothing post-"about to jump off the skyscraper" actually happened with Anje, in the context of this sequence of events Anje's conclusion could still definitely be possible. Okonogi/Amakusa don't really want to kill Anje; their ideal outcome is one where Anje just lives normally.
