I’m not sure if this was mentioned in the comments. This song, especially the music, is considered the crown jewel of all Arabic music. To understand the intricacies and the insane amount of work that went into making it, you would need to hear the entire song, which is longer than an hour, with a really high quality headset to understand.

The Arabic music critics concluded that among her songs, the Rubaiyat Khayyam, composed by a Persian mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, and poet, today most famous for his Rubaiyat, a spirited and profoundly humanistic celebration of life, love, and liquor! She sang this song back in the early 1950s or towards the end of 1949s, after her long-time and permanent poet and close friend, Ahmed Rammi, selected and translated some passages from the very long original Persian text. After the Rubaiyat Khayyam comes this song, Al-Atlal. For both songs, the music director was the great Riad Mohamed El Sunbati, one of the greatest Egyptian music composers of all time, and my favorite!

This masterpiece is surely top of all human made songs. I can't believe it is composed by human. It is almost divine. No doubt there is no match. Even calling this just a "song" is kinda felt insult.

So refreshing watching a fellow Canadian enjoying the Queen of Arabic music! the Canadian "eh" took me by surprise :) In Arabic culture you get your nickname based on your eldest son or daughter. So Umm = Mother/Mom, so Umm Kulthum = Kulthum's mother/Mom. I can say without a a doubt, you're not an Arab if you have not listen to Umm Kulthum 😊 I tell you Bud there is nothing like having an extra large double double on a long drive or weekend country trip without listening to Fairuz in morning and Umm Kulthum later n the day. As you have noticed poetry is vital part in Arabic music, it's the foundation; well it used to be sadly. It have to have a meaning, story, journey, lessons ....etc. Fun fact: Songs are usually written by poets exclusively and then sang by singers/artiest. Poets decides who will they allow to sing their written songs. Another fact is from the majority of the artists from this generation such as Umm Kulthum, Fairuz, Abdul Haleem Hafez, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and the rest is that their songs are long, very long for current times because radio was the only means of entertainment literary, as you said some might not be able to listen to it for sometime or only at a coffee shop or such. TV was not a thing yet. They intentionally repeat verses so listeners hear every word and remember it. Let me know if you want need help with Arabic music. Cheers bud!

On the lack of sheet music: Umm Kulthum preferred to work this way. She was incredibly demanding about rehearsals, and demanding in general of everyone she worked with. Being part of her orchestra was a huge privilege, so the commitment expected was also very high. And as I think others have pointed out, while it's good to acknowledge her specific Egyptian ethnicity, she is loved throughout the Arabic-speaking world, and often by others whose musical cultures are related in some way (with Quranic recitation acclimating Muslim listeners to modal vocal improvisation). There is a Greek singer who covered numerous of her songs.

There were rumors around Emkaltoum when Diva Asmahan was killed at young age ....Em kaltoum was accused of killing Asmahan because rumors said that Asmahan had lot of success for having a better voice and a beatiful look ..she is the only arab singer who could compete with Emkaltoum .. Asmahane was more beautiful .more educated and had a batter voive then Emkalthoum ...her mom was princess graduated from the American University in Beirut Lebanon ..the mother played music and sung well ...she raised her kids Fouad Farid and Asmahan in Catholic school learning french and English plus the family playing music ...Farid and Asmahan had beautiful voives like their mother... they were pretty impressed by their mother ...they learn to sing and play music ..they became famous singers at very young age ...Asmahan was beatiful and had an incredible voice ...as rhey hear of her ..😮all composers run to meet Asmahan and to compose for her the greatest songs ever which effect Em keltoum physically she became less active very upset with the composer she workef with before Asmahsn ... upset and very jealous of Asmahan had problems with the composers who left het behind..So Asmahan became more successful and more glorious then Emkalthoum ....at that time Asmahan succefully stepped ahead as a first class singer untill she was killed almost ruined Emkaltoum reputation until our days tumors still talking about Asmahan's murder mystery.....although Asmahan still remenbered as the best arab woman voice and number one singer and the only Arab Diva ever .Msy her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Infact this is not true, Asmahan wasnt in any ways close to Um Kulthum greatness. The fact, Asmahan was a spy for British, she also used her beauty and involved in many relationships with highly politicians during a very critical period “WW2” The rumour that claimed that Um Kulthum killed her is just a nonsense story to cover the incident

For both songs, the music director was the great Riad Mohamed El-Sunbati, one of the greatest Egyptian music composers of all time, and my favorite! There were some differences occurred between Umm Kulthum and Al-Sunbati in the mid of 1960s when he was in the hospital because of some health issues, Umm Kulthum surprised him by visiting him in the hospital, and as reconciliation, she gave him the translated lyrics of this song for him to compose music and construct this song.
