I have been an umpire for a long time. My observations: 1. The first time the umpire confronted the umpire the coach is in the dugout and does not say ANYTHING to the umpire. She simply kicks a trash can. The umpire was looking for a reason to confront the coach. The coach was not the aggressor, the umpire was, and for no reason. While it may be she was mad at him. But it could also be she was mad at a player or something else. Do NOT go looking for issues to pick on coaches about. Let the coach be the aggressor and show everyone they deserved to be kicked out. Do NOT yell at a coach loudly from across the field. You are upset at them and accusing them of being unprofessional, yet you are being unprofessional yelling across the field. Simply walk over sad say what you need to say in a professional manner. You do not need to show a coach up like that, it is uncalled for and unprofessional. The umpire lost his cool. Do not lose your cool in an ejection. When you let the coach be the aggressor, they throw themselves out. You are just the formal notification they are gone. You are the one that HAS to maintain their cool at all times no matter what. If you blow up and show your butt, you are no better than they are. This umpire created a situation out of nothing. Coaches are going to comment on calls, it is the nature of the beast. If you can not handle the comments (as long as they are not personal attacks) then you need to find another line of work. 2. The 2nd incident..... You NEVER EVER run at a coach like that. Let me repeat NEVER run at a coach. I do not care of they dropped a MF on you in their comments.... you do NOT rush a coach like that. I still did not hear the coach say anything other than maybe the obstruction comment. That is NOT a personal attack. If the coach said you are terrible or something along those lines... then yeah... deal with it. This umpire held a grudge from the first incident, and it is evident. He was looking for a reason to get rid of the coach and it is obvious. The comment was not even close to being worthy of an ejection. And for the record, it was a good call on the obstruction. Only one fielder can be afforded protection when playing a batted ball. Both the 3B and SS were closer and had a better play on the ball. Therefore the SS can not be afforded protection. 3. The PLATE umpire suspends or ends the game, not the base umpire. And that is the last resort and should be avoided at ALL costs. This umpire completely lost control. He is paid to stay in control. He did not consult with his partner or anything, just ends the game and walks off and his partner lets him. Sorry, the coach was thrown out without just cause and the umpire threw a tantrum. This umpire would be sitting down for at least a couple of weeks if he worked for me and would most likely go through some training on handling situations. His actions in this game are totally unacceptable.
@creativewritingtutor57886 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a good thing that he doesn't work for you bases upon the cases as numbered by you above. 1. If a coach at this level kicks a trash can, an umpire is well within their right to warn them and ask them to calm down. It does not matter with whom the coach was upset. Allowing someone to act out is poor game management. 2. The umpired did not "rush" the coach. We cannot see how far away the coach was off camera nor how far away the umpire stopped from the coach. The umpire seems to merely be hustling so as to not take any unnecessary time away from the game. I see nothing wrong with his jogging over (which is not a "rushing" of the coach). 3. The base umpire can forfeit a game under certain conditions, especially given that he is the crew chief. Yes, he should have consulted with the plate umpire. Furthermore, we are unaware from this video what all took place prior to. And if you were a true, solid umpire, you would NEVER EVER... let me repeat: NEVER state that a coach was thrown out (or in this case, confined to the dugout) without just cause unless you were fully (110%) aware of the situation. I hope that you are not an assigner, especially one on a power trip. Unfortunately, in my twenty-one years of calling, I have run across people such as yourself that speak without fully understanding the situation and knowing how to properly handle them. God Bless!

During my son's 14U comp season, we were the beneficiary of a close play at home (which after watching it back in slow motion, the ump called correctly). After making the call and hearing the groans and beratement from the parents of our opposition, the ump literally turned to bleachers and said in an assertive yet strangely calm tone, "I am standing 3 feet away with a better view of the play than any one else on this field. The runner is safe. If you have a problem, post it online and complain about it there. The people in the comments will tell you I'm right." I couldn't help but laugh and wonder how long he had been waiting and prepping for that moment.

Good sportsmanship is not rare, it’s as common as ever, probably even more so since athletes are deterred and incentivized by the fact everything is being filmed. It’s just that every act of bad sportsmanship these days is caught on film and like everything bad in the world we focus on it with a magnifying glass and make it seem more prevalent than it really is. Kids and parents like these are the exception, for every one of them there are 1000 good ones doing things right, which makes bad sportsmanship the rarity.

It is really hard to pass full judgment here as we can't hear all of the audio or see what is happening in the bench. But, there are a couple of things to note to support the umpire. 1. First bunt the batter clearly pulled back well before the ball crossed the plate. Coach wants "Amber" to see if she went. Really? See if she pulled back, ask for a?? She gets a bit incoherent. Then you get the "Wow, really?" Yeah coach, really. Wasn't even a question. Watch the video. HA!!2. Not sure what happens after the second bunt. Strike called and apparently the coach kicks something. She was a bit defiant after. Showing signs of unsportsmanship. 3. Umpire runs across the field to warn the coach. You don't hear the audio but obviously she said something. Basically, she is doing it to herself and her team. I am thinking this coach may have a reputation that the umpires were aware of.4. Umpire makes the right call on the obstruction to the SS. SS was in the base runners path with no play. Umpire cannot award 3rd with the runner at 3rd not advancing. Runner is awarded 2nd safely on the obstruction. There was really nothing to argue over here. Obviously this coach must have been acting out in the dugout. Likely verbally and physically but we can't hear or see what happens.I would not have called the game unless it was multiple people acting out. I would have ejected the coach though and given a bench warning to the remainder of the coaching staff.

@jumperguy98678 жыл бұрын
+CV1989Colt - I disagree with your obstruction interpretation. The shortstop was coming in on a ball that was initially rolling in her direction. It can be strongly argued that she was doing so to make a play - which would erase any "obstruction" call. Still, since the runner cannot advance anyway due to 3rd base being occupied, if obstruction WAS called, it would be moot. I think the fact that the ball was actually fielded by the pitcher doesn't erase the shortstop's right to be where she was. The runner should have made an effort to avoid contact. I agree with you on all other points.
@CV1989Colt8 жыл бұрын
+Jumper Guy SS had no chance to field that ball. It was a little dinker that immediately died. The runner has a right to the base path. Likewise the fielder has the right to field the ball cleanly. In this case, there is no ball to be fielded as it was hit too weakly for the SS to even charge. The pitcher fielding the ball was a result of the change in direction of the hit and the hit having no energy to even get past the mound. Pitcher fielding the ball is not a factor in why I would agree with obstruction. With the benefit of being able to watch this over and over again in replay mode, I could not overturn the obstruction call. I can respect your decision not to call obstruction. It is a judgment call.

But for the field ump to just call the game like that, and for the plate ump to walk off with him, that was just odd. I think the field ump either was having a bad day, and/or couldn't take it anymore(it can admittedly be hard to hear a large group of people talk the way coaches and oarents do to umpires, especially when you yourself feel like you may have made a questionable call, and already feel like an assholes about it.)

Had there not been a runner in front of her that was still the legal occupant of third, you'd be correct. But since she can't be the legal occupant of that bag, she is still considered "between bags".

I think the field ump may have been dealing with jock itch. It’s frustrating sometimes to deal with coaches and parents, sure, but you don’t call the game like that. Quite frankly he seemed more interested in what was happening in the dugout than on the field. From the small sample anyway.

@johncronin95405 жыл бұрын
Kelly Spencer It’s been several years, but I worked many games at every level but NCAA and pro ball. You are right that some parents and some coaches have a negative effect. But the vast majority of the time, I had no problems with either spectators or coaches. Most were grateful we were there, and said so. It’s hard to get a handle on exactly what happened here, because I can only see a tiny fragment (and even that was edited) of what may have led up to this moment. I can’t even see either dugout. Now a lot depends on the age level of the players. The younger the players, the more you want coaches to be a good role model. But I always understood that often, players are angry with themselves, not my partner and me, and they need to vent that frustration. As long as the player or coach is “kicking a garbage can, and not another player, or yelling at us, I really wouldn’t address it (except perhaps in Little League). And if such behavior started to get to the point of being audible beyond the dugout, that’s when it’s time to warn, which was usually enough. The next step is ejection. You don’t punish a whole team for the actions of one person, be that a player or a coach. Forfeiture is a last resort. If an ejected person refuses to leave the area, or if a crowd or team gets out of control, then you may have to consider it. Usually the coaches were pretty good at policing their fans/parents. Again, I don’t have the complete information. But I don’t think I would have forfeited this game. I heard nothing inappropriate. And it would seem the plate umpire, who is closer to the dugout, did either. All the coach can do is to speak with the league officials, and they would then take it up with the softball umpires association. (I always did baseball, but I assume the procedures are similar).

@@eauhomme WRONG!!!! It doesn't matter how many coaches are on the bench if the head coach does not leave the bench area or the field depending on what the umpire told her to do he/she has it in there power to forfeit the game. And if you read my whole point it was if he had some tact he could have let the girls finish the game but you don't know exactly what was said by the coach and if she's not going to leave the field then he has it in his power to call the game. A good umpire would have worked for one to keep that coach in the game and for two to not let it escalate the way it did. well dumbass if you knew anything about umpiring, his position on the field is dictated by runners on 2nd and probably 1st. he must be watching both. and to my recollection the bench/dugout is in the general direction of 1st base most often, therefore he will naturally have a good view of dugout activities as he surveys the field and situation.

"Appeal it if she pulled the bat back" when are coaches gonna learn that whether a batter pulled their bat back when they square to bunt has no bearing on it being a swing, there has to be an offer, a batter can leave the bat over the plate all day long if they want, but if there was no attempt to strike the ball, it's nothing

Also, how nervous we are, and we go out there to umpire and the parents just heckle us sometimes like umpires are not going to miss calls.

Coach kicked something. Ump called time out. verbally warned the coach. game starts back up 2nd event Coach that was verbally warned. Said something that was not audible by us as the viewer. Ump called time out again. Ran to the coach. Said "I heard what you said. Coach have a seat. Dont get up again. words i cant make out. dont get up again. words i cant make out . Your done. Coach gave a second verbal warning going so far as telling the coach to sit down and dont get up again or the coach is done. Implying the next time the coach would be thrown out of the game. the game starts back up. 3rd event. base runner on 2nd is running to third base and bumps into the shortstop. Umpire rules that the shortstop was obstructing the runner. Crowd voices their displeasure of the umpire. Umpire calls the game.

No if a specific kid or coach says something wildly offensive, sure you toss that one person. You never call ab entire game. Thats crazy and unfair to everybody else who is behaving correctly.
