Score of Teresa Carreño's 'Un bal en rêve' ('A ball in dreams') Op. 26, published in 1869. A ball refers in this case to the formal gathering in which people dance, and so a young Carreño tries to portray what it would feel to dream about such an occasion. This beautiful piece begins with a ragtime tune [0:20] that evolves into a proto-tango theme [0:23]. Bear in mind that Carreño, as a South American, lived the birth and growth of many popular musical genres that began flourishing during the second half of the 19th century in Latin America, in a time when colonialism and imperialism were at their highest and when 'mestizaje' of races (a far better word for 'miscegenenation') meant also a mixture of musical traditions. After the introduction, the sleepness comes [1:03] with a suspiciously similar theme to that of "Happy Birthday" (which wasn't composet yet!), and we finally fall asleep and dream of the ball [2:09], which turns out to be a full-on merengue, one of Venezuela's most common dances and rhythms. This seemingly crooked/ungraceful waltz ends and, as the dream slowly evaporates [4:50], we suddenly wake up [5:24] to the initial ragtime tune.
Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) was a Venezuelan composer, pianist and singer, considered one of the most prolific latinamerican female pianists of her time. She published around 75 works, mostly short piano pieces, and almost all of them were composed before she was 20 years old. Before that age she already met (and received compliments from) Brahms, Rossini, Liszt and others. She played for U.S President Abraham Lincoln when she was only 9, and Amy Beach - who has been featured in this YT channel ( • Les Rêves de Colombine... ) - dedicated her Piano Concerto to Carreño.
