I find it bizarre how often people quote that by 2050 something like 70% of people will live in urban areas, without ever thinking about the effect this will have on global and regional water systems. It's very good that people in LA are trying to filter more waste water, but we need people to start thinking more systemically about what they eat, how food is farmed and where they build new neighbourhoods.

Usually it is worse than one thinks ^^. In the US over the past decade it became common practise after fracking used toxic waste to break up certain stones for gas to now more generally dump toxic wastes into the ground where there are underground caverns. Those corporations lobbied, lied and denounced EPA agents who were on their case till those quit. Which ofcause did not prevent to eventually the truth coming out that ground water aquifiers got poisoned and in hundreds of cases regionally tab water became a health liability. Ofcause as it is with capitalism always, profits are privatized while the costs everyone has to bare who didn't even inflict the damage and so the owners will settle somwhere else keeping their ill gotton gains and attitudes, once more getting away with in my view attrocities against the people(or nature in general) and in my book that makes these the enemy of the people. The only solice in all of that to me that even them eventually will have to pay the piper or their breed when nothing is left unpoisoned, maybe some will even change their ways (Saulus to Paulus^^) or maybe eventually someone will say enough is enough.

Only when water becomes even more expensiv, then it might be viable to have more desalination plants, which but does not remove the root cause of the problems, but adds new once. Like what to do with huge amounts of brine. Just putting that back into the sea kills anything in the surrounding area. Also that water scarcity has already reached wealthy countries like f.e. the US. and companies for some time now are capitalizing from that by buying up rigths to extracting water all over the globe, partly with devastating consequences for rural communities no matter where.

Or… it’s not a “growing problem” at all. Maybe, the doom-and-gloom of the situation only sounds so horrible because it’s framed this way. Perhaps, “half” the world living without access to clean drinking water, (the dramatic and terrifying line they start the video with), is actually a pessimistic glass half-empty description of a major accomplishment for humankind. Because for the first time in all of history, a full half of the global population has access to safe drinking water- something that has never happened in all of human history, and something that every single year is only increasing to a larger portion of the global population. TLDR: don’t let “bad news” distract you from the fact that what was described was good news.

Simplistically, more heat absorbed on land & sea contributes to a warming atmosphere, which means more evaporation from fresh water sources like streams & rivers. This extra water vapor held in the atmosphere being a greenhouse gas contributes to more warming. The extra water vapor means heavier & more intense precipitation, which often quickly "runs off" seawards instead of being gradually absorbed into lakes & aquifers. Changing global weather patterns means precipitation is not consistently falling in old historic patterns, with an uptick in localized atmospheric rivers, & seemingly more precipitation is occurring over oceans thus not replenishing fresh water sources?

Water scarcity is not the problem. Keeping the water clean, or cleaning it for agriculture or drinking is the challenge. All fresh water open bodies are mildly contaminated with a few heavily contaminated. Most of the clean water is supplied to us by mother nature in the form of aquifers or a reliable somewhat predicable supply of rain storms. Sadly, our world climate regions are undergoing major changes and we all must collectively adapt to those changes.

2023 will be. Rough in terms of wild fires and heat waves. We are transitioning into El Nino weather pattern. 2024 will be even worse, we will be into a full El Nino effect. We already had crazy weather with la Nina Wich is the pattern we just left last month. La Nina is supposed to keep things cool in general . Imagine what El Nino will bring. the Los Angeles Times proclaimed in the fall of 2022 a 1200 year flood snow never to be seen again. 5 months later Southern California has up to 10 feet of snow. More snow than anyone can remember. The Rhine river had periods in history when it was completely dry.

How many predictions of NASA fraud James Hansen have come true? I live in Alberta and I remember that during the 88 Calgary Olympics that temperatures were 20C (68 F) and there was no snow. The experts were saying we won't see snow in Alberta anymore. Over the last 35 years we had tons of snow we had temperatures in the -40C for weeks and the glaciers in Banff were supposed be gone by the year 2000 are still there.

Floods have historically been the problem in the area where I live. Getting the water out of here tends to be more of an issue. Water saving appliances and use restrictions would be counter-productive. The pasture here grows enough to support all of my cattle without needing to buy feed or haul in water, and the chickens love rotating in after the cows have been moved to the next pasture. No plowing or fertilizing needed. Not building large cities in a desert or having your neighboring country re-route your water would seem to be low lying fruit.

California urban water use is only 10% of total allocation and has been reduced even as population has increased due to landscape mitigation. Los Angeles County just captured over 50 billion gallons of runoff from recent storms, enough for more than 2 million people over the next year. 3% of the earth's water is fresh. 2.5% of the earth's fresh water is unavailable: locked up in glaciers, polar ice caps, atmosphere, and soil; highly polluted; or lies too far under the earth's surface to be extracted at an affordable cost. 0.5% of the earth's water is available fresh water.The water you are talking about is saltwater and Desalination can work but it's prohibitively expensive and it's like trying to fill up a broken cup when a lot if water issue come from bad governing like building housing where water is not readily available, pollution , Water Wastage in Agriculture, exploitation of groundwater, etc. Add droughts in the mix and a lot of countries will have headaches.

This report is a perfect example of how we have all been lulled into complacency. Water is an absolute necessity for life to exist. Any life. No water equals no life. In either 1970 or 1971 there was a book published entitled "Limits To Growth". It was a scholarly study of how much necessary resources our planet actually had. Of course water was included in the report. Then usage of those resources was studied. From there it was a relatively simple case of extracting the amount used from the amount available to predict how long that we could expect to have any particular resource. That report predicted that we would run out of fresh water by the middle of the 21st century. That's 27 years from now. This was not some obscure report published in some out of the way country. This report was commissioned by The Club of Rome. It was the first time that computers were used to model future situations and it was carried out at a major American university. This was a well known study that caused a major stir amongst academics. It took over a decade for the dust to settle. It took that long before before the academic community accepted the validity of the reports conclusions. But the U.N. did not have a conference concerning water until 40 years later? Yeah right. The truth is that nations have been planning their strategies around this information for decades now. Policies have been formed over a wide variety of topics with this in mind. Yet the general public has literally been kept in the dark about this vital information. We are still not being given the facts of the matter as this report clearly shows. Why? The reason why is quite simple. The powers that be know that if the general public was truly aware of how dire the situation is, they would panic. And panic is NEVER beneficial for the economy. So instead the information that we receive is being managed. As a result of carefully laid out plans the general public no longer knows who to believe. And that was done on purpose. By sowing seeds of doubt and discord we have been led into inaction. So sit back folks and enjoy the ride. It is about to get VERY interesting.

​@@Mr.Blister1960 It is just some basic science... Warmer air can old more moisture. In fact, as the Earth's atmosphere warms, the total amount of rain will increase. However, rain will fall less frequently and when it will fall, it will be more intense. This means that droughts will occur more often and flooding will also occur more often. Thus, the fact that it rained/snowed a lot in California in the last few weeks doesn't change the fact that droughts will keep getting more intense in the future.

From my limited knowledge desalination is extremely expensive, energy-hungry and also creates Toxic Brine so it might not be the best option for a lot of places especially since a lot ot the issues with water scarcity also come from mismanagement and overconsumption like bad irrigation systems in Agriculture, expanding housing in an area where it doesn't make sense, pollution, etc. Countries in the Middle East can afford to keep running these energy-hungry things because they have oil money but poor in water resources.
