Even when there is a lack of demand, food producer still keep production at full throttle (even forcing worker to risk their lives working through the pandemic). All because they need to keep their inventory always full to not miss out when the lockdown is over. And so, they keep producing food, which cant be sold, then said food are scrapped ENTIRELY, then start growing again, and the cycle repeats until the lock down is over.

Don't blame Americans :( We get heavily advertised a way of living that we do not know the implications of by powerful corporations. Overwork and then overspend to mask the misery of overworking. Psychologist and data scientists PhD's hired by companies to figure out the best way to make advertisements to manipulate people to spend more on everything including eating, drinking and being wasteful. One person cannot out think an army of scientist studdying how to persuade you. Spend more, throw away more. Which means more purchases and being further trapped to having to work more.

I think it was nestle that had been over extracting water for years in California. They had bought some very old water rights privately that were suppose to equal 3-4 trains worth of water back in the 1930s and they basically saw an opportunity to over extract by messing with the weight and bought the rights specifically for this reason. I believe each train was supposed to be equivalent to 35k gallons and they pumped 65-90k gallons every month or twice a month. It wasn’t until the drought got really bad and someone started to dig after the numbers didn’t match that they got caught. They paid a small fine compared to how much profit they made and how much the over pumped stolen water was worth. It’s pretty insane how much corporation’s get away with and run the country. I don’t think anything will change until things get a lot worse tbh until then it’s business as usual.

Governments always make deals with businesses first, and local people or the environment come as second. So one way to beat this, is for locals to become partners in their own local business that can use their local resources with their local environment and people in mind. That way their government still gets a cut, which in turn lends support to the local business initiatives.

Those nutrients and water held in the discarded material are then turned to smoke. Farmers in Punjab won't stop growing water intensive crops because the get MSP from government. More price than market rates. And these were the ones who protested against farm laws. Which would have allowed farmers to capitalise. It would have allowed some Punjabi farmers to shift from rice (water intensive crop) to others which doesn't require water. Which would have helped them. But elements which benefits from broken systems won't let systems to be fixed.

And the bad part of this debate is when you point this out to the people in Punjab even the so called literates and NRI Punjabis. They will call you 'Bhakt' or 'pro-bjp'. The report states that Manila has remunicipalised water. This is NOT accurate bec water services in Metro Manila continues to be privately managed but highly regulated by government. This year we received 200cm rainfall annually but due to lack of water reservoirs all the valuable waters was diverted to ocen.. Our both central and state government doomed our wetlands and lakes.

They had this in South Africa for a time as well. Know what they did? Informed the people on closing taps when you don't use it. Use showers, not baths and finally reusing pool water by using filters and chlorine. The problem went away in a year or so.

Even here in germany which is rather a good area in terms of available water, we noticed in the past seasons deminished harvests because of lack of water. Not yet fullout draughts, but it is going that way. Only way i see would be huge deselanation plants in the Nordsee. Which in itself maybe problamatic when done by more and more countries, too.

We don’t talk about how WE waste water at home. Close the tap when brushing/shaving/soaping your hands. Dry & reuse your towel a few times after taking a shower. Don’t take excessively long showers. Fix leaky faucets & taps. Not all your clothes are dirty - if you put a shirt for dinner, it’s not dirty when you get back home, it can be reused… and so on.

Would the removal of dams not result in faster water drainage? Dams can hold fresh water from rain to make sure it is not lost to the ocean.

Dams tend to favor higher rates of evaporation, you have artificial lakes everywhere a dam is. More surface hit by sun's heat = more evaporation. Perhaps you get more water locally but more of it ends up in the air and you leave less and less for those downstream, which are then forced to build dams.

As Ethiopian orthodox I think the best way to solve this problem is to fast…. We fast for almost 6 month. Fasting means to be vegetarian for 6 month and also we eat once or twice a day and for the other 6 month we can eat anything. I think it’s sustainable and also healthy

@@pieceoflintifoundonthefloo554 actually it’s not only fast but eat once or 2 a day we are literally supposed to stand for 4-5 on average during fasting… we practice since the age of 9-10 so you get use to it and you are able to do anything

@@marhuny But what if one needs to eat a lot for one’s own physical needs? Some people, like someone I went to high school with, can only eat meat because they are underweight and have medical conditions that keep them that way.

@@marhuny First, telling people that they are required to consume less for the greater good was a tactic used by the Soviet Union to justify the greed that the government had, no matter how out-of-touch they were. Second, I think that restaurant hamburgers are sometimes too big to eat in one sitting, since they may be 1/2 pound burgers rather than 1/4 pound.

....water actually has over a dozen states in just how it can freeze. Water is one of the most mysterious elements still to this day....kind of like for over a century now humanity can't figure out if viruses are living or not....and yes laws that make no sense: some states out west can't collect rain water; their "freedom"...or stubbornness is off the charts.

In tamilnadu, we have overcome this problem by replenishing the ground water through the same borewells from which the water is drawn....Also we have a lot of ground water replenishment techniques implemented in and around Tamilnadu. Only in Chennai metro city, water mafia controls the market. But please do not blame the water scarcity on agriculture as more farmers who do crop rotation and permaculture are essential to feed the general populace.

However insane it is making water more expensive is part of the solution in areas - how else do you control consumption? Unless you get a calculated "water credit quota" per month... that is the only way on putting the brakes on water use imo. Edit: great solutions at the end though! Definitely need to tackle this in every way we can.
