UN rapporteur says Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, calls for arms embargo | ANC

U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese told the global body's Human Rights Council on Tuesday (March 26) that she believed that Israel's military campaign in Gaza since Oct. 7 amounted to genocide and called on countries to immediately impose sanctions and an arms embargo. Israel, which did not attend the session, rejected her findings.

Francesca Albanese, is a lawyer who worked for UNRWA...her husband Massimiliano Calì served as an economic advisor to the Ministry of National Economy of the State of Palestine in Ramallah. Working for the government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas...In a 2021 lecture about her book, Palestinian refugees in International Law, Albanese admitted questioning her ability to be impartial on the subject: “I feared [that] embarking on a matter [on] which I had deeply held personal views could compromise my objectivity.” (Mandate to discriminate, part 2.
