When children are conditioned from childhood to accept orders whether they are comfortable or not ie parents abuse kids by ordering and not having any care what children feel or at least listen to their feelings. The children learn to not listen to their own thoughts and do what parents want even if their own feelings are conflicted.

Hi sis, can you not get good relatives into this matter to support you? If not, I would suggest calling childline or the police as this is not only haram but also illegal. Your parents are just filthy backwards animals in this situation who deserve jail time & hell. Forget about their reputation and live a better life for yourself and your future children one day In'Shaa'Allah, if you get married to him or anyone forcefully, it will just become worse, if you ask the police to help out, they can get others to help you with getting an accommodation/house to stay in for your safety, please do not listen to your 'parents' in this situation at all sis, they will be punished heavily for doing this to you, In'Shaa'Allah.

As parents, we always wanted our children to have the happiness till jannah. My first two children married their own choice whilst the third agreed with our choice. Most important is the choice is as per guidance by Rasulullah pbuh - the four criteria: Islam, wealthy, appearance, offspring. Wallahualam.

I am so relieved to listen this. Thank you so much, my parents are forcing me to marry my cousin, its been more than 3 years since they have decided, and I am reluctant to do marriage, I talked to that person, got to know him and we are not compatible, but no one understands that. If I display my reluctance to marry him or said "No" so many times, they go like, it would be okay after nikah. With every passing day, my belief of not choosing that guy for marriage is getting firm and my parents are dragging it to Nikah, because they think I am wrong about it. They dont want someone outside our family to marry, because they think we wont be happy, I dont understand, how could someone guarantee that who is going to be happy or not. I am very disturbed for these 2 n half years, ever since i have decided not to marry him, because no one listens to me. If there is absolutely no chance you feel that there's no way you can build a family with him, it's important you let him know. If he isn't aggressive or pushy in any way, he'll understand insha'Allah. You absolutely don't need to have kids to see if you will get along better because eventually it could turn disastrous for yourself and every party involved. Funny how A LOT of muslim parents think of their child as still children, even when the children have become adults. 11:25 thank you for mentioning and acknowledging how some parents do emotionally blackmail their children. 12:55 "The child belongs to Allah, not to (parents)". Guess how many parents genuinely think that their children belongs to them and to them only? My parents (and family as a whole) don't even allow me to have a favorite colour, eat lots of vegetable, have my own harmless opinion on anything or even wear a bigger hijab because it's not to their liking. All because I'm the youngest (I'm 27 this year) so I don't know anything about the world, and they only wish for the best of me so they have every right to decide everything about me. Even taking my belongings without my permission. When I say no to them (in a calm manner, no cursing or yelling), they accused me of being possessed by syaitan and drag me to see an ustaz to exorcise me. Guess what, the ustaz said there's nothing wrong with me, and my family just laughed it off. No apologize given. And they keep on pressuring me to get married asap since I started college. I've done my very best to please my parents and family, but everything I do are wrong in their eyes. Even getting sick is also burdensome to them and my mother always complain "taking you to the doctor is such a waste of money and time" or "taking you to school is such a waste of time". And they are the ones who are so proudful of my educational success eventhough they are against me the most in pursuing higher education overseas with a full scholarship. It's like they are hypocrites. Being so presentable and friendly in front of society but acting the opposite behind closed doors. People always speak about how children shouldn't be against their parents/family, but what about the other way? What should children do when the parents/family is the one being emotionally/mentally abusive? I'm literally going senile with just living or thinking about them. It's like I'm not even allowed to breathe in my own family's house! I've done the tahajjud for a few years to ask Allah for a solution, and alhamdulillah I even prayed in front of the Kaabah a few times. But my family never changed for the better. Advising or discussing with them never works because they never listen. What else could I have done? I'd really love to hear Mufti Menk's opinion on a family like mine. It's so funny how my family always pulls the "You're the youngest, so you should obey us!" card on me, but I'm the one who always had to guide them (in life, in mannerism, in Islamic rules etc) since my teenage years... Ya Allah please help me.

I was forced to meet two different guys despite me crying so much because I didn’t like them. And I was made to say YES to the marriage proposal or else I would’ve been disowned. They only used Allah’s name telling he’d punish me if I rejected these men. I have been a victim of forced marriages, early last year my mother proposed for me a girl without my consent but I had to accept since I love my mother and wouldn't want to put her in an embarrassing situation. Though the proposal didn't go through because the girl rejected our proposal and I was glad that I can now introduce my preferred marriage partner to my mother. Unfortunately my mum rejected her and she is against me marrying her she has no valid reason except her own personal pride.since then I have been so depressed and sad getting weaker as I cant convince my mum and if I do so she curses me out and I become guilty. I am going through alot and I ask for you duas during this testing times.

@Dark Horse - Jazakumullahu Khair. I'll keep this mind. My condition is worse and it's embarassing to even mention it. If I'm at the center of attention in front of a couple of people, even in front of my relatives who I haven't seen in a long time, my anxiety kicks in. I couldn't speak properly or articulate my words correctly, I cannot make any eye contact with them, & then my head begins shaking/shivering for a couple of mins. It's such a worst feeling. At that point it becomes a fight or flight response. The dua I constantly read in these situations are Rabbish rahlee sadri from the glorious Qur'an, and then Allahummastur Auraatina Wa Aamin Rau'Aatina among other duas, Alhamdulillah. But my condition worries me. I would like to get married. I'm a 27 yo M. I have to sit in front of large crowd in the Masjid for the Nikah and will be the center of attention. To be clear, this isn't an issue at all when I'm going for my 5 daily Salah to masjid, Alhamdulillah. Please keep me in your dua(s).

@Analog foundry i have the same issue..Don't avoid your fear. Go out and try to engage with people. If it is causing too much problem, then please visit a psychiatrist or a psychologist. Download the shyness and social anxiety work book by Martin and Richard. It is a self help book and is available in PDF format. It will help you InshaAllah.

@Faryal Siddique - May Allah make it easy for you. I have memorized some du'a(s) for my anxiety and I recite them often and ask Allah for help. These du'as are from both the Qur'an and from the authentic Hadith that will, In sha Allah, help you. No. 1 is the du'a asked by Moosa (AS), to help him with his speech, and to open up his chest (for confidence, boldness), and Allah makes mention of this dua in the Qur'an: [Surah: 20, Verse 25-28] "Rabbish rahlee sadree Wa yassir lee amree Wahlul 'uqdatam Mil lisanee Yafqahoo qawlee" "O my Lord! Open for me my chest (grant me self-confidence, contentment, and boldness). And ease my task for me; and make loose the knot (the defect) from my tongue, that they may understand my speech." The next dua is from the Hadith, from Al-Bukhari 7/158. For anxiety, sadness, etc. "Allahumma Innee 'a'oodhu bika minal- hammi wal hazan, wal'ajzi walkasal, walbukhli waljubn, wa dhala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal" "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men (i.e. others)."

As someone who has actually gone through this where I let my parents put me through an arranged marriage I regret it so much. I wish I never put that much trust and respect on my parents. When my ex was abusive my dad didn’t protect me and when it didn’t work out and I suffered trauma now my parents just told me to go pick up the pieces myself. My life is miserable except that I have Allah. I am filled with regret for ever trusting my parents. If I knew this would be my outcome I would never have done it to respect their traditions. Now they treat my sister better after I fought for the same thing to not happen to her. She doesn’t even care about the oppression I am facing continuously from my parents who I tried to be good to. Seriously worse thing I did in my life. May Allah never put anyone through this ever or to have the fate of a family like mine. Ameen. Mine was arranged for the sake of arrangement. It was announced to the world before I got to talk and get to know my ex at all and suddenly there was pressure that I had to marry him to maintain family reputation and ensure my sister would also get prospects. May Allah protect everyone from this. Ameen

I'm lucky to have very supportive parents. When I was getting involved in a relationship, I included my parents from the very first day and they helped me as much as they could. I've now been engaged for a while, in the sense that our families have been in agreement for almost a year. This is something that hits really close to home cause my parents heavily pressured me to marry someone they wanted. I married him to keep them happy and we were both miserable for 3 years trying to make it work - his parents forced him too. We are nothing alike at all and I was depressed af the entire time; my only comfort was that Allah knows best. We are both now trying to work out a divorce but our parents keep pushing us to try again and it is so mentally exhausting to keep dealing with it. Either way I am definitely getting that divorce because I see no changes in our relationship going forward and I can stand up to my parents now when before I couldn't. Funny thing though my parents keep getting angry at me for listening to them before and how I should've not let them get me married... (They're not horrible people at all but this mindset is so deeply ingrained into them that they will never understand their child being their own person.)

I’m from India and I got divorced when I was 26 , 8 years I had to struggle in the court to get that divorce while that guy already got married before even getting divorced. I’m 44 now and I had been struggling to bring up my two boys who are a blessing from that marriage with out any help imagine. It was only allah who is supporting me all the time. Now I’m 44 and until now my family treat me like untouchable in any wedding ceremony as I’m a divorcée . My Bad luck will pass on to that bride it seems. It hurts me a lot. What he meant about that sentence that if there is a chance of not getting along with each other or one of the two persons suddenly realized they are not right for each other, that's why the engagement period is there for, it is better to realise this in the engagement before realizing it after marriage. At the end the whole point of engagement is to explore things about the other person and getting to know him/her before the marriage.
