If i have multiple files, why would I open a new composition for each one when I could just bring them all into one composition? Is there a benefit to having a composition for each file, or perhaps they are merged at some point later on?

How's it going thanks for the tutorial but I'm having problems with After Effects just loading the clips. I mean I did what you said in the tutorial, dragged a clip in and made a composition. Went into the comp setting to make sure it was at the same frame rate, made sure both blue marking are the beginning and end of the clip so it's highlighted and then pressed play and it started playing from the ram preview where you could see a green line appearing while it was loading. Now what seems to happen is when any video gets past the 2 minute mark the green bar disappears from the first 2 minutes while it loads the next 2. Now I'm not completely new to video software cause I have pinnacle studio 21 where you can just drag the clip into the time line and it'll load up with no hassle. So what's the problem cause something like this should be very easy, I have the newest After Effects so I'm not quite sure if they've made things a bigger pain in the ass for the new version. OK well sorry for the rant and thanks for the tutorial

I may be really dumb, but what is the point of choosing the duration of the composition ? Can't you just edit in the timeline? Like in Sony Vegas Pro? Because im trying to switch since after effects is more advanced but what if i have no clue of the duration of my movie? On Vegas Pro i just had to select my editing clips all in one and make it in the final movie file I can watch, no need to creating a composition or so... Thanks for any answers ;)

If you have no clue what the duration of your video is, you can make the video itself a composition. So when you open After Effects, drag and drop your video file in the Project Panel, and drag and drop the video into the timeline. You'll then see After Effects made a new composition based around your video. It should be the exact same duration and all. The duration doesn't change if you continue to add longer videos like other editing programs. In After Effects you have to create a composition to edit, and when you create the composition you either keep the duration at default (15 seconds for mine or whatever your media footage is if you're using any), or you manually change it. So say for example I create a composition and don't change the duration.... After Effects will set my default duration to 15 seconds. If I then import my video which is 1 min, it will only show 15 seconds of that 1 min video unless I change the duration to 1 minute or above. For me if I need more duration, I just go back to composition settings (Ctrl+k on pc) and change duration from there. Hope this helped!
