...did i completely miss the point of this song? i genuinely thought this song is about settling down and enjoying life in domesticity 😂 that the protagonist is still the wild individual that she's always been, but it's like "hey this normal life turned out to be enjoyable, who would've thought. yea maybe i'll stay for a bit" kinda thing lmao. the sinister undertone that you explained completely makes sense. wow i see this song in another new light now. thanks for the analysis 💛

you CAN view this song in that way if that's what feels true for you though!! 💖 there's totally elements of romanticism and nostalgia that i mentioned and this whole song can come off very ~dreamy~ for me, i just can't get past the chemtrails being present and the fact that it's repeated so often AND it's in the title of the song, for me it sets up a dynamic that i can't overlook and then the little details just all seem unbalanced to me... BUT your own interpretation is always valid too! this is all v subjective😊 thanks for your comment!✨

I thought this too! Like, domesticity is working for her, to a point, but she's really proud of how she's managed to keep her wild soul alive within that life, and also surprised by that. Maybe she didn't think that she could and was nervous about that when entering the domestic sphere. I must admit, I'd not really got into the conspiracy theory meaning of 'chemtrails,' but I imagined them symbolising, before watching this video, as maybe bigger ideas, out-there dreams, or wider meanings of life that could be glimpsed by 'contemplating God'/ looking up at the sky. Tbh, I'm in the UK, and chemtrail conspiracies aren't a thing here. Or maybe, as a writer who's also on the PTA, I'm just projecting, but I felt really represented and understood by this song :)

I think oposite concepts can be seen through all the lyrics of the song. She is born in June (summer) and he is born in December (winter), as far as I know, in astrology, Cancer is more of a conservative personality while Leo is a wild one, the chemtrails (bad) and the contry club (good)... She also says that she is in the water and he is in the wind, she used that metaphore before in a track called Brooklyn Baby: "I think we're like fire and water I think we're like the wind and sea"

I definitely agree on your analysis to this song. I always see Lana as someone who's always chasing after freedom like her song Ride. And in this song i feel like she's in a place where she doesn't fit in. You're in a place where you try to convince yourself that this is the normal life where you should be but deep down you just want to get away and be in a place where you don't have to think of conforming into something.

"nobody's son, nobody's daughter" To me feels like, when a person is a daughter or a son you need to fit into a mold, so not being someone's means you can just be yourself

omg yess your analysis opened my eyes on many things !!! to me, the song chronicles three big timelines...one BEFORE, one DURING and one AFTER the "chemtrails over country clubs" life . the protagonist doesn't come from money , during a period of her life she might've been labeled as "unhinged or "unhappy" or maybe even "bored" due to (in my opinion) mental illness because the wording obviously states so. that era of her life is one she left for a country clubs life where she wished the ghost of her previous life didn't follow her but it kinda did, and now she can't seem to get rid of this allegation so she points out that she's "not unhinged or unhappy" mid convo when litterally nobody asked. it's like she's trying so hard to prove something as much as she's trying to fit into this new society (country clubs life) so she "swims with jewels on, she makes boring small talk with people she has nothing in common with, she wears jewels to stores...etc. and then she meets an old lover (like when we were kids under chemtrails and country clubs). he knows her from BEFORE country clubs life, they both come from the same place, he knows who she is . then comes the part when they run away (the AFTER country clubs life) and she lives the normal typical life where she washes her hair and does the laundry, late night TV...etc . they're happy and they feel at home as she states : "you're in the wind, im in the water" in my opinion means that they're both back in their own elements like they're grounded and in touch with nature (representative of authenticity) since she's a water sign... so they're alone in suburbia the brentwood market and she doesn't want anyone but him. they left the country clubs life behind and they went bellow it which is basically the normal, easy life that she needed all along :dddd

You did such an amazing job with your analysis! I feel like I could go over every statement you made but let me just share some of my perspective - Astrology - Lana's rising sign in Scorpio that's why her work is very much about passion, intensity and dark themes, but also that makes her a double water sign - Caner/Scorpio and the position of her Moon Sign (Moon is the ruler of the Cancerian aspect) in Leo shows the immediate water-fire (im)balance. Cancer is the care-giver (that's why she references kids, elementary schools, home life) but also it is connected to the Mother Nature as well (which is reflected in Lana's NFR album where she incorporates climate change issues as a time stamp of her work - chemtrails, fires in LA etc.). Lana being a double water sign, the main filter is the emotional filter - that's why she always has a statement of how she feels ("I'm not unhappy" "I'm not unhinged"). What is even more interesting is the fact that Lana was born on June 21st which is the cusp between Gemini and Cancer. Gemini is ruled by Mercury (movement, traveling, cars) so there's no wonder why she always has a notion of cars, running away, movement in general since the idea itself is so close to her Sun aspect (from the astrological point of view). Cancer/Capricorn go in line with one another as they sit right across each other in the astrological circle so they are the most compatible and we also see the Capricorn symbolism of in all throughout Lana's work (older men, questions about religion and God etc.) What is also interesting is that the Moon in Leo when positioned well in your natal chart usually brings cats as pets or in general feline symbolism in your life and Lana does have 2 cats as pets but also in Born to Die video the first shot of her is her sitting at the altar of a church next to two tigers. That first shot of her is literally the vision of her natal chart if her natal chart had to be represented in an image. :)

"Under the chemtrails AND country clubs". In my opinion, she wants (metaphorically) to be under the country clubs (upper class). She wants to live like a norman person (normality settles all over me). "I'm still so strange and wild": she's strange to the other rich people, because she doesn't want to live like that anymore but "i don't care what they think, drag racing my little red sports car". She's trying to escape from the country club because there are chemtrails over them (?) Great video btw, I loved it!

When I heard the song for the first time and I heard the turquoise reference, It made me think of how in movies, whenever there's a tycoon type character wearing a cowboy hat, he always has a thing around their neck with turquoise stone, instead of a tie. And turquoise was also a sacred stone for the natives. So, the man that the character is married to is someone rich and important who lives the "country club life" and she is trying to get him to give up that life in which the turquoise is a symbol of something taken over and owned, like a trophy and really live the more simple life. I think the chemtrails over the country club shows how rich people think polution can't affect them, that they are somehow isolated from the rest of the population. And in the video she wears a luxurious mask on her face, but ironically it's full of holes. This is indeed a brilliant song and video.

You're doing a great job with your analysis! I love diving deep into the lyrics and both: finding out what the author had in mind and how I read it, how does it apply to my life. Fun fuct: since English is not my first language and there are still plenty of words I don't know, when this song wasn't even out yet I thought that Country Club is some kind of barn, jezzy club rather for poor people living on the country sides ;d About my interpretation: I think it's about the inner conflict the protagonist has, from one side she strives for family and safe love, from the other side she's afraid of loosing her wildness and freedom, she's trying to find normality as something that'll bring her fulfillment, she sees this as the only way to this peaceful lovelife so she's lying to herself that normal activities can be enough for her, but she deep down knows it's not, that's why we have those declarations, she doesn't want to convince us, she wants to convince herself. Also, Lana, before releasing this album, was showing a book "Women who run with the wolves", so I think we could find some possible interpretations in there. This inner dilemma from this song also reminds me of the phrase from her new album, from Blue Bannisters "You can't be a muse and be happy, too You can't blacken the pages with Russian poetry and be happy".
@summersentiment
@summersentiment 2 жыл бұрын
thank you! 💖 & i can definitely see why you would think of a country club like that!! the name doesn't intuitively suggest that it's a place where wealthy people go lol i agree w/ what you're saying & LOVE what you said about her trying to convince herself!! ✨ i def think that book has significance in relation to this song, especially when we look at the music video and all the wolf symbolism in it 👀 really love the blue banister lyrics you mentioned as well, those lyrics paired with what you said really help show the inner conflict present in lana's lyrics!

The line "as the summer gets cool" means a lot to me because it proves that there is something wrong going on in the background. The song is placed at summertime but here lana explicits that it's getting cold so it's like it still summertime but you see that there is something not good going on (that's the whole feeling this song transmites to me). So that line is like a resume of all the feeling of the song.

i heard that after i posted a snippet of this on my tik tok! lol there are always many different ways to interpret a song and they can all be valid! i do think you can use the symbol you mentioned and it'd still work throughout the song...it could be a juxtaposition of recreational drug use with a symbol of wealth/status (country club)...it'd bring more of a surreal vibe to the song in my opinion and give it a filter of dissociation too which would be interesting! thanks for bringing up another way to look at it!😊
