Travel by train, see some fantastic sights, from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. The journey is around 90 minutes from the historic Hua Lamphong station. And the price? 15 Thai Baht! That must be one of the biggest bargains of the century!
You can also travel from the new main Bangkok station, Krung Thep Aphiwat station. From there trains can reach Ayutthaya in less than one hour!
I travelled third class, in a fan cooled carriage with open windows. You can also find trains which have second class carriages and air conditioning, although they are much more expensive.

Cheers, mate! I bet it hasn't changed much. Apart from some of the views of the construction and redevelopment!

Thanks, PFI. Think I'd choose Third class even if it wasn't cheaper for most short journeys. You can't help but chill. It's super relaxing!

Interesting 50 cent (USD) train ride BC. Authentic and cheap is a good way to go for 90 minutes. Great information. A.train tracker is quite a 21st century convenience. Thanks for Posting Hope to see you soon buddy.

Thanks a lot, Ric. That train tracker is really good, to be honest. Not least because on the way back, I was aiming for a particular train, but I found out it was delayed and switched to another train, which wasn't (as) delayed! Anyway, hopefully, we'll catch up on the shuttle bus soon. In Bangkok now, reviewing a minivan service!

15 bhat that’s insane really . 3rd class would be fun but I will be honest I need the air con 😂😂😂. The old station is so picturesque. I would go from there 90 mins no problem . Seeing all the sights along the way 😍😍 nice one BC

Thanks so much, Jimmy. I like aircon as much as the next guy. But I have to say when the trains moving with the through wind, it really doesn't feel that hot to me. And I was sitting with my back to the engine. I went through Ayutthaya a few months back, on my way to somewhere else, and I was determined to come back just to see the station. That was before I really knew much about the historic temples there. It's well worth a visit, Jimmy!

You didn't say a word about the seat comfort. I don't mind going the slow and cheap way, but my buttocks only allow for a limited level of discomfort 😂
@balloonchaser
@balloonchaser Ай бұрын
Thanks, Alain. Interestingly, some carriages have wooden seats! I walked through those to the blue padded seats. They are actually pretty comfortable, especially when the train isn't full and you can grab a "double seat" to yourself. It didn't give me any issue at all, but maybe if you are travelling all the way to Surin you'd see it differently?!? I think the big advantage of train travel compared to bus or plane is the ability to walk around if you begin to feel uncomfortable. In short, your buttocks would be fine, Alain!

You make a good point! All this rush into high speed lines and routes that make a profit completely overlooks the simple pleasure of trundling along a picturesque branch line at a reasonably slow pace. You certainly see another side of the suburbs of Bangkok travelling by train. And Hua Lamphong station is beautiful! Thanks for your comment, again!

Thanks for the info, i just subscribed (don't know why i didn't earlier). i want to visit TL, Cam and VN 2026 (2025 could b a bad bad year for me) so i have to learn as much as i can ie language basics, travel tips, where to go and some golf courses to play.😁 looking at 1 to 2 yr visit, taxes are a concern in TL for expats?
@balloonchaser
@balloonchaser Ай бұрын
Many thanks for the sub. I've paid tax whenever I've worked here. Tax rates are low. For expats not working, I don't know any who have paid tax. Although there's a rumoured change on remittances, I don't think many are worried!

great vlog BC, i could quite happily shadow some of your rail journeys, i would much prefer the slower trains (like you clearly do) but i DO like air-con, the other thing i'm not keen on is cold food, i've never liked the idea apart from sticky rice of course so i guess i would need to buy sarnies before leaving!
@balloonchaser
@balloonchaser Ай бұрын
Thanks, Tony. That's another thing we share then. I hate cold food, too! In fairness, a lot of the cooked food they bring on is still warm when you get it. I think they cook it at, or nearby, the station that thru board at. Aircon, I can also understand. But the through breeze is pretty cooling in the fan carriages. At least sufficient for a 90 minute trip! Cheers!

@balloonchaser

I've also seen some terrible examples in 3rd class. Dirty squat toilets. On this train, it was a sit-down western toilet, with toilet paper and a wash basin. Whether it was as clean when it arrived in its final destination of Surin, I don't know. But a pleasant surprise!

Thanks, BB. Just the smell of fermented anything makes me need a toilet, or a least a bowl to throw up in! I know you think I always travel 1st Class, but unfortunately there was none available! Third class rocks tbh!

Curious to see the conductor on the train still wearing a mask. I thought that was all behind us now. Not exactly luxury, but for 15 baht, it represents a very viable means of travel. I would use it. My wife would whinge if we did though.
@balloonchaser
@balloonchaser Ай бұрын
Thanks, David. I'm not sure if the mask is necessarily regarded as covid protection; it may be. But, it does get quite dirty and dusty on there. I wouldn't fancy working on one all day. I wouldn't even fancy going all the way to Surin, to be totally honest. But for a couple of hours, especially at the price, you can't beat it!

masks where common LONG before covid in all se-asia and east asia mainly against dust smog and sneezing and cough. Been driving scoter/motorcycle about +11 years in bangkok and se-asia in general and always use kn95 mask against the dust and smog..a white mask is often grey/black after 1-2 hours use.

many farang doesn't realize how cheap thing can be for normal ppl ..im been living and working +15 years in se-asia and many tourist and expats pay more for one plate with mediocre western copy food than i eat and drink all day normally. pretty funny because i do have a western salary working here and only spend about max 20% total of it living based in Bangkok a month

Because unless there is an English menu and the same typical Thai food they like Pad Thai , Fried Rice or Pork and Basil at prices some as high as ten times the price they are terrified. Next time you are on a long train journey in 3rd class take a walk around and notice not a single foreigner on the train purchased anything. The latest and newest excuse is "I,am vegetarian".

Does this train operate every day? We plan on going there in November on a certain date but it shows no schedule both the Hua Lamphong and Aphiwat station. Plan on taking some family members there. Any suggestions would be great?
@balloonchaser
@balloonchaser Ай бұрын
Yes, there are many services between the 2 Bangkok stations every day. In fact, I put the schedule in the description of the video. You won't be able to see or book trains for short distance journeys like this as far ahead as November. In fact, for third class services like my train the advice is to book at the station on the day. Hope this helps.
