This is my favorite Elvis performance. His passion and emotion is out of this world. I still get goosebumps every time hundreds of times. Elvis never wrote his music. In those days writers sold their music or received royalties. Elvis knew how he wanted his musicians and backup singers to compliment his every word. His production skills were part of his genius.

Elvis Presley's "IF I CAN DREAM" From his 68 Comeback Special, was Elvis's Powerfully Sung Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him by Earl Brown with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song.

Elvis was devastated when MLK was killed. The words are from the “I Have A Dream” speech in Washington D.C at the Lincoln Memorial when people of all races convened to listen to civil rights activists. Written specifically for Elvis to sing at the end of the '68 special, this parodies the Martin Luther King speech, which Elvis was a big fan of. When Elvis first heard this he said, "I'm never going to sing another song I don't believe in. I'm never going to make another movie I don't believe in".

SOME BACKGROUND INFO: As per Steve Binder, the producer-director of the '68 special, Elvis, Binder & a group of others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings. Elvis was disturbed about many things that were going on in the world; there had been some assassinations a few yrs. prior to King & Kennedy, & the Vietnam war was raging. Binder asked Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on his discussions w-Elvis. The song was composed post haste as the show’s taping was wrapping up. The song is not a literal dedication to any one person or persons but is notable for its similarities King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. We have to also thank Steve for getting one of his people to keep Elvis' manager Parker AWAY so that he & Elvis could do what they needed to do. There are many wonderful videos of Steve talking about how it all came together & the real reason for the iconic “If I Can Dream” song, which many people aren’t aware of or have the wrong notion about why it was written. Thanks very much. The female backups for this '68 special were The Blossoms which included Darlene Love.

@@playitagainsue There was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that went on, & if it wasn't for the great Steve Binder, one of the most upstanding, ethical people in the business, who know which way Elvis' career would have gone. Elvis gave Steve a private phone # to call him but it was intercepted & Steve was never able to get through & never spoke to Elvis again after '68 was over. If you're interested, there as a video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYa1dWirgdela7c (7:19 min.) entitled "Elvis' director, Steve Binder talks about creating Presley's big comeback special in 1968" which is straight to the point & puts to rest a lot of misconceptions about the song. This special was recorded June 27th, 1968. R F Kennedy was assassinated June the 6th and Dr. King only 5 weeks before that. The country was being torn apart by racism and protests about the Vietnam war. Elvis' manager was dead set against Elvis performing this song, but in a very rare instance when Elvis said "NO" to Col. Parker, he did it anyway! The special was televised on December 3rd, 1968 and was originally promoted as a Christmas Special.

One of my absolute favorite Elvis songs. Yes he sang this live not long after Martin Luther King was assassinated. hence the I have a dream. reference in the song. He wanted to honor him and close the show with it. He was devastated and mad. He was a big supporter of civil rights. His back up singers the Sweet Inspirations were black and several times he was told they couldn't stay at certain hotels or eat with all in restaurants. Elvis said if they didn't come He wouldn't come.

For the '68 special his backups were The Blossoms, not The Sweet Inspirations at that time. The great Darlene Love was with The Blossoms at that time. It doesn't seem to be one of the many Elvis songs that still get played regularly on the radio nowadays .. Apparently it was a No.2 hit here in Australia in 1968, so I must have at least heard it back when it came out .. It also made Top 10 in Canada, and was just outside the Top 10 in the US and UK. When Elvis first performed this song, everyone who saw him were blow away by his performance. Its a shame that there are so many people who hate this man just because of hearsay. Elvis has been dead for 47 years yet some people call Elvis a Pedophile, racist and a thief. Yet when you ask people to back up their comments with actual hard evidence they disappear? Elvis performed this song to bring people together. Unfortunately, he failed this song if i can dream is more relevant today 2024 than ( 1968) if thats possible?
