Karpov plays an attacking game with his opponent's king stuck in the middle of the board.

I had already seen some of Karpov's matches, in a pre-world champion period, where his game was more attack-oriented! It's a great game from Tolya. I like your videos. Straightforward, simple and accessible analyses. Carry on!

Another nice video. Thank you. Robert Byrne, as you know, was the New York Times chess columnist from 1972 until 2006. Keep up your videos, and you might eventually become the KZbin Robert Byrne, which would place you in very good company. 🙂 All the best!

Don't see chess columns in newspapers any more. Before Byrne at the NYT I believe the columnist was Horowitz.

Two years after this game Byrne reached his peak in chess, taking 3rd qualifying place at the Leningrad Interzonal ahead of Tal, Larsen etc. The 2nd place was Korchnoi’s and the 1st one - Karpov’s.

In his younger days Karpov was death to the Sicilian Defense. He had deep tactical vision. Strange that Botvinnik once said of him when Karpov was at Botvinniks school of Chess that he believed that he had no idea of how to play Chess.

When I saw the title, I was expecting that one Karpov-Sax game from Linares '83, dunno if it's been covered on this channel already but it sure deserves to be!!!

Robert Byrne had the sweetest chess gig anyone could ever get, $250k a year writing 2 columns a week for the New York Times. 😊 He also beat Fischer with a French once, which seems surreal.😮

Yep, the Fischer boom was a real phenomenon - which he destroyed himself by never playing a serious game until the 1992 rematch with Spassky....

Karpov is one of my favourite players. If you define a Tal-like game as a beautiful attacking game rather than just a tricky or unsound attacking game, Karpov probably played more Tal-like games than Tal himself. Unfortunately, off the board Karpov proved himself to be a real slimeball.

This game reminded me of the scene in the Wizard of Oz where the Lion let slip a pugnacious ROAR, and scared himself so bad he almost fainted.

It is an exaggeration to say that this party is in the style of Talja. Without queens and knights. This game is closest to the game of world champion Botvinik.😎
