Interestingly Unzicker's son has a science channel on KZbin that I watch. Regarding your remark at 11:21 that two knights can't force a mate, while true, king + 2 knights vs King + pawn can force a mate. So in the position at 11:21 if Black trades off his 3 Queenside pawns plus Knight for the two White Queenside pawns as you mention, but is left with the pawn on g5, White could still mate him with just the 2 knights since that extra pawn can be forced to move and this prevents positions that result in stalemate. This is a well-known resource both players were certainly aware of.

When reading the title I thought Kasparov had hacked Karpov’s computer, or stole Karpov’s notes, getting hold of some secret opening preparation: bad, bad, Kasparov. Luckily, not so: the word “stole” is a bit over the top here, I wouldn’t have liked it to be used against me.

Does history record any grin on Kasparov’s part as he played the move?

Great channel, wonderful narration. But you stated that White cannot force a win with just two knights - all Karpov would have had to do is trade off White's two remaining pawns and that would ensure a draw. Is that correct? I thought that as long as Karpov still has a pawn (that can move) then king and two knights would be able to (or may be able to) checkmate. Comments?

Yes, there is an extremely rare mate for the side with the two knights if a black pawn can be blockaded in a specific position. The practical problem is that it almost always takes more than fifty moves, so the fifty move rule draw kicks in. I can't say for certain if that position can reached in the variation I showed. However, my engine says the position is very close to equal. Having said that, it might be possible.

@@TravelingMooseMedia and you are entitled to that opinion Sir, I think Kasparov eclipses him in almost every statistic, let alone being the victor of their battle, so it can only be personal preference as to why you think he is better, I'd genuinely luv to here why, I luv chess and rate Karpov highly! Just don't think there is much you can point to that shows at their peaks Karpov was better

@@indigochild2.098 the format of their world championships favored the younger Kasparov. Karpov would have crushed him in 8/12 in 84 in the most recent format. Then he would have drawn in 86 and the tie in 87 would have been in karpov’s favor. Then again, in 1990 the 12 game format should have given him another draw giving him 4 world championships in a row. Anything more than 12 games is exhausting so they don’t do it anymore, as it doesn’t show true skill. Imagine if they made Tal play that much in his bad health all the time. He’d be considered a much worse player. And even still the record was 19-21. Considering half of the games shouldn’t even have been played karpov would be in favor. I’m talking head to head, karpov beats Kasparov but as a whole, Kasparov beats the entire ecosystem of players
