This past month we were able to see something that hasn't been filmed on our beaches before.
Early in July, we got to witness a massive school of fish right off the beaches of Wildwood and North Wildwood.
Some believe these are bunker fish or bluefish. The jury is still out on that one.

back in the 1950s, and gone by the late 1960s, was a Bunker plant on Rio Grand Ave ( where the sewer processing plant is today). So there were maybe a dozen Bunker Boats based out there and in Ottens Harbor which used per seine nets to surround schools of Bunker just like in your video. They had a net maybe 1000ft long and split it between 2 smaller 24 foot seine boats and one would start around clockwise and the second countercw...and when they met the circle was closed and they would tighten up the bottom of the net forcing the fish into an ever more concentrated area on the surface. Then the mother ship would motor up and drop a 2-3 foot diameter pipe into the water and vacuum the fish up and into the hold of the boat. In later years they used a small plane to fly a grid over the ocean to find these schools and then radio the location to the boats. It got overfished and the factory closed. The factory squeezed the fish to extract fish oil oil ( used in the cosmetic industry) and then cooked them and shreded them to go into dog and cat meal. They also raised mink on the property because the oil made some of the best fur and these were sold for mink coats which were popular at the time. More info at the Wildwood museum.

As a former guard in SIC, i wouldn't suggest swimming into a school of bait.

Maybe it has something to do with the cold water. Only 58 degrees, should be in the 70’s this time of the summer

Spoiler alert, it's bunker. Bluefish will not school that tight. Bluefish will feed on bunker. Schools of Bunker are very common up and down the beaches from April to November. I have snagged them and use them for bait from the seawall in the spring. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.

I have video of this in Belmar from 2018 with my drone. All depending on the time of year like you said, it could be bluefish or bunker. Most likely bunker.

Atlantic menhaden, AKA bunker. Back in the day they weren't called bunker until they were caught and used or sold as bait. Primarily for bluefish.
