@@DIYfreezedryI’d love to do snap peas too! You made them look really tasty! Question: you said you boiled them for 15 minutes. That seems like a long time for blanching, especially for a food that I would usually eat raw. I thought blanching is only about 2 minutes of boiling. Does it make a big difference if I boil for less time than you suggested? Thanks in advance! I love your channel and have watched most of your video!

I really enjoyed this video. We have a large (I'm guessing the one you call pro since it has 5 trays) and I've done many different things in it already. Things that make wonderful snacks are strawberries (sliced), blueberries (either from frozen bags or fresh, but you have to poke them when they're fresh so that moisture can escape), Green beans, carrots, and tomatoes with a little salt. I'll be trying out the snap peas for sure, thanks for the idea. Oh, and I also have avocado in two forms, guacamole and just plain. I did sprinkle in some lime (you can do lemon but I prefer lime) to keep them from browning.

We keep our freeze dryers set to 24 hours.... because why not? We never hit reset. We also pre freeze everything. It saves LOTS of wear and tear on the dryer.
@DIYfreezedry
@DIYfreezedry 8 ай бұрын
That’s so true. And good point just keeping the same setting there all the time. I sometimes I have to change if I’m doing candy but other than that could keep it set at 24hr
@bloodlove93
@bloodlove93 5 ай бұрын
why not? because why waste energy and time? candy can take 2-6 hours,and many fruits can be done in 8-16 hours I'm no genius but I'm not stupid enough to pointlessly and needlessly waste time and money on energy that could either be used otherwise for something like another batch or more,or just not used and paid for.
@stevenfeil7079
@stevenfeil7079 5 ай бұрын
@@bloodlove93 LOL You think because the extra dry time is set to 24 hour someone MUST let it go that long? That is funny. It is a SAFEGUARD to keep the dryer from going into preservation mode and refreezing the food. And you are right.... you are NOT a genious.

Do you think you will spice up your snap peas??
@paulv69
@paulv69 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for this... i bought my freeze drier with the primary intent of making healthy (fat free) crunchy snacks. i'm on an eternal quest to make a fat free potato chip. So far i've failed. i suspect my results are similar to yours with chick peas, i.e. the 'chips' powder in the mouth vs crunch or crisp up. i was crossing my fingers that your chick peas would be like the crunchy roasted ones... but i guess not. The snap peas were brilliant, can't wait to try that, i just bought a bag of those pea crisps at Costco yesterday with no small amount of regret for the processing ingredients (fat content), great idea!!! The avocado? i'm surprised that worked because of the high fat content in avocado, typically high fat or hi sugar stuff doesn't FD well. Re the avocados browning (oxidation), i use dehydrated lemon and lime juice all the time (can get it on amazon brand name TRUE lemon/lime). Sprinkling that on the surface can slow oxidation. That's a win too!! Crunchy mushrooms is another snack i'm trying to figure out how to make after getting addicted to SnakYard shiitakes i got at evil Costco lol.
@DIYfreezedry
@DIYfreezedry 9 ай бұрын
Ohhhh mushrooms sounds like a great snack that would be yummy!!! Right the texture can be hard to get right…. I did do sweet potato chips in a previous video and they didn’t get too powdery, I boiled them for a few minutes before freeze drying so they were partly cooked.
@paulv69
@paulv69 8 ай бұрын
@@DIYfreezedry okay, i tried mushrooms (shiitake) asparagus and avocado. i cut the asparagus into about 2 inch pieces, steamed then lightly coated them in powdered ranch dressing, froze, then FD'd. Taste is great, texture is typical freeze dried texture, they don't powder or slime when you eat them, but i wish for more crunch and believe i've figured that one out (read on). The shrooms i lightly coated in ev olive oil (i am going for healthy snacks, so i try to avoid added fat), garlic and salt, air fried till crisp, then froze and FD'd. OMG, the texture and taste are like crisped bacon to me. Definite win. The only change i'll be making is i'll keep them whole because they shrink significantly in the process. i suspect the secret to extra crunch is in the added oil during cooking/prep. so imagine asparagus will get a similar result if prepped like the shrooms? idk. The only thing i did with the avocado is sprinkle them with "True Lemon" dehydrated lemon as a seasoning.
