I'm heading to Summerland Key in early April. Any recommendations on who to charter my buddy and I? Also, areas to hunt?

I don’t know anybody in Summerland key. My friend Jake has a charter business out of Islamorada but that’s a pretty good drive. There’s lots of fish in the lower key so whoever you end up going with, should show you a good time. The only problem with April is that grouper isn’t open yet.

I’d recommend your typical dive set up but if you want a good gun for reef and light blue water, I’d get something with a reel. You only need to upgrade to a breakaway with a float if you’re chasing wahoo.

Why do you always free dive and not use scuba tanks ?

I usually don’t need a tank to shoot enough fish for dinner, but when you need to put hundreds of pounds of fish in the boat, scuba is pretty helpful!

How does someone get into spear fishing?

My advice would be to start going with someone who knows what they are doing! Freediving classes are a good place to start as well but can be expensive. Don’t go too crazy with gear at first, but i’d highly recommend a good mask, plastic fins, and a wetsuit. A weight belt is actualy not a necessity when starting out, and if weighted improperly it can be more dangerous than helpful. You can find used guns online for good prices on facebook marketplace and other used sites. Be sure to learn the regulations and work on identifying the fish you want to target. My last piece of advice is to never kill anything you aren’t going to eat! Good luck!
