I change ignition switch on Maluch today hoping it was just the simple fact that he was not getting any voltage to the sparkies.
I also decide to take head off and inspect the pistons for any damage.

Hi, you have already found the non-starting fault. It is the erratic spark, I would suspect the crank sensor or the trigger box that is near the coil. The engine mechanically would start before you stripped it, and the fact it would not start on starting fluid confirms its the spark that is at fault, and to be completely sure, when you were checking for spark it should have sparked multipul times but hardly sparked at all. Usually when the trigger box goes you have no spark at all, when the crank sensor goes usually it it sporadic, as you have. Hope this helps you. Also you are correct about the float height, it needs more free movement before closing. Good luck, I look forward to seeing it run. All the best.

Thanks Nobby. Yeah I did check for spark in a previous video and I could see it sparking so felt that it was ok. But I kept having doubts about it as nothing else seems to have been working. I do have one more video to release from my recent trip with a conclusion sort of, so watch out for that one I would welcome your thoughts 👍

Your problem is almost certainly ignition related. Intermittant spark in this video, but in a previous video it looked like the plugs were sparking way too early, hence the backfiring through the carb. I would check the compression with a compression tester (they are cheap enough, or borrow one). But it is unlikely to be compression. Thanks for the videos.

Hi Rob. If you check a previous video 'Uncovering the Secret Behind Fiat 126s: Valve Gap & Compression Testing!' I do test for compression and only get 90psi which I feel is a little on the low side. I have one more video to release from this trip coming this weekend I believe. But yes I now feel it is down to spark not being produced at correct time or even at all. Parts in Poland are quite cheap so I am not too bothered going through the cylinder head and checking everything is fine and replacing with new parts such as gaskets and the like, but it would have been nice to have Maluch running so I can concentrate on body work during the summer months.

@@desilva68 Sorry, I thought I had seen all your 126 videos but that one eluded me. If compression is a bit low could it be that the cam chain has jumped a tooth causing lowered compression and difficult starting? However my money would still be on spark timing and generally poor spark.

Hi Bryano, when looking at 2 cylinders, where both pistons are in dead top. Something is wrong. Or it could be me. Claus

Hi Claus thanks for your reply. When my timing mark was aligned on pulley, both cylinders were at TDC. I am not sure if this is correct? I believe its correct, but not 100% certain on this engine.

Why didn't you try filling the float chamber manually or even a bit of fuel straight down the carburettor to see if it fired. Taking the head off seems drastic until you know you have fuel and spark, you already know you have compression enough to at least fire.

Iv already done this and with easy start. There are a few vids on this car so i presume you've only watched one of them! Check out my channel. Compression is a little low I would say But thanks for the comment.

I’ve not watched it all yet. But if you get it started you’ll melt through that return hose with the exhaust in about 5 seconds

@@desilva68 I know what you mean. I’ve just overcome a similar issue. I’ve come to the conclusion a lot of the parts on these cars are worn to the point of being the next break down. It’s worth checking your timing chain too. Mine had so much play it was moving the cam timing/ignition timing Turned out the new plugs I had bought were the issue. Keep at it. You’ll get there.
