Yep he's back at nr 19 in live ratings after briefly leaving the top 20. While those 2 are of course amazing players, it is probably the weakest world championship if you don't count the FIDE title when it was split. Gukesh is also only nr 5, first you have Magnus, then the 2800 trio Caruana-Nakamura-Erigaisi, then there's a bit of a drop down to Gukesh (his rating might have suffered a bit the last months precisely because he focused everything on WC preparation).

I know the match has been low with a wee bit much of the premature draws at times, but this was a good one. I struggle with deciding who to hope for, Ding because I would like to see him prove he deserved to win the first time and also to prove the pre-match nay-sayers wrong. If it goes towards recovering his confidence all the better as a return to his top form would be fantastic. But I also want Gukesh to win because he's young and so talented as well, and he would inspire the youth of not just India but the world by showing how now is the time for next generation of players to start replacing the old guard. I guess I'll be both pleased and disappointed no matter how it ends, but a close match like we're having is the best for everyone. Great stuff.

Ding really has no nerves at all, the way he burns time, takes huge risks, and then blitzes out a series of perfect moves is just amazing... after this game, I must say I'm pretty sure Gukesh won't be able to crack him. As the last World Championship shows, when push comes to shove, Ding just has the better nerves, that's why he won against Nepo, and I can't imagine Gukesh being able to do better. Well, we'll see...

Tbh I'm really shocked Gukesh drew this game. If you watch his games you'll realize that when you make that much mistake on the board, he's the type that will IMMEDIATELY capitalize on it not giving you a chance to make up for it. When the chance is given, he goes all in. He always find the best moves, only moves infact that works in that situation. So tbh I'm really surprised he let this chance slip, not only did he lose his time advantage, he let chances slip that he should have capitalized on but didn't. So tbh I'm shocked...

Letting the engine go on. Depth 44 Ding's f6 is the top engine move. Imo the biggest blunder by Gukesh this game was repeating Ra3/Ra5 letting Ding get closer to time control which is not a chess skill issue. Significant advantage on the clock and didn't make use of it. One additional move under time pressure could have seen a different outcome (but then again: Ding may have not over thought Rc8 in that case so who knows). Hype match at the end of the day. Can't fault either player: both playing well.
