I am really into knitting and crochet and specifically for knitting I tend to like a lot of the Eastern European flower motifs. So my husband got me some books from Russia from the 1950s. Obviously they are in Russian, which I don’t know, but the books have a lot of charts and technical drawings. It would really have been a shame for someone to rip them up to sell instead because they are beautiful books with a ton of information. I have gotten a lot of use out of them just from the illustrations.

i used to collect stamps and the USSR stamps used to be one of the prettiest and they have lots of history in them. maybe you can do a video about that

As sad as seeing these pages torn makes me, I really enjoy this type of content from you :) the more relaxed/showing us your day to day as a historian/collector is great, especially cause the more lesson-focused videos are heavy sometimes (knowing what kind of society we lost and how many of us were forced to move abroad during and after the collapse).

I assume this comment is too late...But if you are looking for a way to reuse those scraps, and don't necessarily care about preserving them, you could glue them to a big piece of parchment, almost like a collage, and use it as wrapping paper. That way you can at least turn it into a nice surprise for a fellow soviet enthusiast

over the past 5 years or so, my russian teacher (also my squash teacher, now retired) has kindly donated a huge amount of his russian language teaching paraphernalia and general soviet union ephemera. lots of it dates from the 60s when he was both learning in school/university and then eventually teaching. the coolest of all to me are the Mozaika magazines, a russian-english publication that was monthly from 1966-7 to help people learn russian, which i have loads of. there are lots of textbooks and schoolbooks which are fascinating (particularly reading the cultural background sections from the 60s english perspective), but he has also given me a set of large prints from khrushchev's anti-alcohol campaign, hundreds of newspaper clippings regarding soviet issues from an english perspective (not as interesting to you as they arent in russian i suppose), and even a russian typewriter (in lieu of a russian keyboard he promised to me when i started learning). when i get around to indexing it all and maybe photographing it, ill try and find a video of yours again to see if youre interested at all.

12:44 these are actually a collection of quotes and aphorisms, parts of poetry and sayings, I'd say it's a useful thing for scrapbooking, although I think it wasn't intended to be ripped up like that... I have a similar book in my home, I think.

12:02 Oh my god, they ripped it off from "Russian forest" by Leonid Leonov! I do not support book ripping but Leonov's books are pretty much rare nowadays, and Chekhov or Tolstoy were published in millions.

18:30 It's a book about Nikolai Shchors, Soviet Ukrainian Civil war hero. The famous "Song about Shchors" (Песня о Щорсе) was written about him. I love its lyrics. Because I can relate - my own great-grandfather, an orphaned shepherd and worker from Turkestan, was in the Red Army and, just like Shchors, his life "has passed in hunger and cold" ("в голоде и холоде жизнь его прошла"). Alexander Dovzhenko made a film about Shchors in 1939. Nowadays Ukrainian fascists try to erase him from history, destroying his monuments. But they will never succeed.

Balalaika can be tuned in two different ways - classical an folk, and I don't play, but I have watched some vids on KZbin, and a guy there showed that balalaika in a folk tuning is like an ukulele but better - easy to learn, fun to play etc He played La Bamba lol He also showed how to play chords so... Videos r in russian but I can leave a link

I just hope people don't fall too much for memorabilia and try really to study the experience of making new society. Being born and raised in a People's Republic, I would tell that the emptiness of for-all-equal-education is the source of the ultimate doom of this system. It does not matter if it is hammer and sickle or a pitchfork and torch or whatever. Also socialist/communist society should not compete/battle with capitalists according to their rules. If the capitalist world makes a lot of fidget spinners, why the f.... we should do it? In my opinion the worst mistakes of the socialist bloc was falling into the trap of empty exhausting competition on capitalist terms.
