Yay so happy to see some Hoyas! What you need to look at is how the tendrils grow. If they are true trailers, they will grow downwards, but those that need a trellis or a janky stick are the ones that shoot 'up up and away' in search of something to grab hold of. I have one currently climbing the cord of the blinds and it's already over 2 metres high 🤦♀ My favourite starter trellis is 2 janky sticks on either side of the pot, with string woven between them. The hoyas love them, they cost next to nothing and actually look pretty cool.
@HouseplantygoodnessАй бұрын
That’s such a genius idea! 🪴 Janky stick trellises sound like a perfect and budget-friendly solution! 😂 I'll have to try that for my Hoyas. Thanks for the tip! What’s the tallest Hoya you’ve got climbing right now?
@JoanneZiraАй бұрын
@@Houseplantygoodness I'd say my Pubicalyx and my Memoria have the longest tendrils, both over 2 metres but my Sunrise and Kerrii are both happily working their way up a wall and are flowering non stop. I have 17 hoya and have only stopped buying new ones because of lack of space. They are fun because they're unpredictable, like when they suddenly start to grow after 6 months of nothing, or decide to flower after 3 years, and you don't have the faintest idea why 😂

You can make an easy makeshift terrarium by using a wide glass vase put upside down over your plant. Looks pretty and raises the humidity quite a lot. My local thrift store always has so many vases for next to nothing so I can really recommend that

It's wayyyy past time to see Hoya on your channel 😁 When you have a trellised Hoya and *force* it downward (say, to wrap a very long vine) there does indeed need to be enough loose vine so that it can adjust itself to growing upwards, or the plant will very likely "retire" it. Hanging, doing their own thing, won't have the same effect. It's free to find the light in its own way. Welcome back, and cheers from Iowa City 😊

I’ve seen both you and Emma from GoodGrowing mention that Pellionia is a terrarium plant recently, and I’m so confused because I have pulchra, and it’s possibly the easiest, least demanding plant I own. I’ve had it since February (winter for me), have kept it in all lighting and humidity conditions, propagated it many times, and it has never skipped a beat. And I picked up a big, full repens (not variegated, though) for a friend at a big box store about 6 weeks ago, and it’s also seemingly happy with relative neglect in ambient conditions. Granted, we’re just coming in to fall, and it has been fairly humid for much of that time, but we’ve had major fluctuations in humidity, even from day to day, and so far so good. 🤷🏻♀️
@HouseplantygoodnessАй бұрын
That’s so interesting, from what probably me an Emma are seeing on the retailers here they say it is a terrarium plant and I think we both took it as gospel, maybe not so! 🤔 Maybe your Pelilonia is just loving life with you! 🌱 Every plant has its quirks, huh? It’s great to hear yours is so resilient. How are your other plants handling the change to fall?
@beckyfrichek8190Ай бұрын
@@Houseplantygoodness so far so good-I’ve actually discovered that in my home, my indoor plants get the best light in the fall and the spring. Early fall, in particular, is a really good time for many of them, as long as they don’t get sunburned. My pulchra is in a fairly low light corner, though, so sunburn isn’t an issue for it. We’ve had roller coaster weather with a dry, cold week followed by a hot and humid one, and back again, but as long as I properly monitor them all for changing water needs, everyone seems to handle it pretty well.

Some Hoya will still grow pointing down you kind of have to just trial and error it, others will stop immediately, if it seems like it should trail, it usually does ok. You’ll know right away if you need to trellis

I love Hoya"s, don't get we wrong, but I don't grow them. Why? These are pest magnets. The moment I got rid of them, all (possible) bugs went with them. I grow mainly orchids and (too many) other tropical plants and when they went and treated all my plants, I've never had problems any more and that was over 25 years ago.
@HouseplantygoodnessАй бұрын
Wow, 25 years bug-free after ditching Hoyas! 😲 That’s incredible. Orchids and other tropical plants definitely have their own charm too! 🌺 What’s your current favorite tropical in your collection?
@TOEKIEWORLDMarcАй бұрын
@@Houseplantygoodness Yep, bug free for all these years. Of course once in a while a bug might sneak in but that's easily dealt with. New plants always are treated preventive and kept away from the collection for at least 3 weeks so no nasties will get in. The combination of orchids and tropical plants, including bromeliads en Tillandsia, Monstera, Philodendron, Ficus, Anthurium and sooo many others. Also flowering tropicals and trees. All are growing in my apartment now, no greenhouse anymore. I do have a few open top aquariums that raise the humidity. Some are shown on my KZbin channel. Alocasia, I don't have anymore but some new corms are coming and this time I'm going to try them in full water culture. And to answer your question, my al-time favorite still is Monstera deliciosa albo variegata. The form that produces half and full white leaves. Not the easiest one to grow or root from cuttings but over the 10 years or so, I mastered it well. Another favorite is Pilodendron 'Painted Lady'. Lost my old plant but just got a new cutting from a friend to grow on again.
