After studying clothing modeling and sewing, I can tell that it's very normal to leave the sleeves upper sewing "rough" or "unfinished" when we are trying to obtain a natural-looking little "puffing" on the shoulder part, especially if, like you said, we want to save money regarding the sleeves padding for a puffed shoulders look. Also for the sleeves wrists edges, we usually use a different internal fabric so that the wrist parts will deterior slower than what they would, every great artisan manufactured piece of clothing is rigorously hand stitched into the edges of the wrists and often (in jackets especially) also on the bodice edges. Many tailors in my country still attain to these practices. Love your channel! Hugs from Italy ✨

Love that jacket! I have a black boiled wool "Trachten jacke " from Austria that I love to wear in everyday settings, and since it's from probably no older than the 1980s I wear it to do outdoorsy things without feeling too much guilt. Definitely a treasured item that I will use to pattern another if it ever "dies."

Oh not just "at that time". Some of my older relatives still wear clothes like this in the countryside. And I remember a really old lady who was usually on the same tram as me when I wen't to highschool. She was allways in full folk clothes.

This jacket reminds me of the Japanese lolita goth or punk goth jackets. Highly wearable. I have similar pieces (modern day version, not vintage). Such short jackets are very popular in Asia due to influence of anime and manga. One can mix and match with many things depending on your style. Long dress, hot pants, tutu, riding pants, anything goes. Doesn't have to wear it as a period piece at all. Can even be embellished as a short steam punk jacket. You got a fabulous piece there!

Very interesting! The clothing of peasants in 19th and and early 20th century is very nuanced, complex and fascinating: peasants copied rich peoble (because fashion and status), but were always a little bit or clearly late and fashions stuck around much longer on the countryside; rich people romanticised and copied clothing of peasants, which became therefore fashion; peasants took pride in that and dressed in a way, which was considered authentic und traditional; the thought: "This is what we (or the peasants) should look like and this is the right way to wear folk costumes"; the institutionalisation of folk costumes; the fashionable modified folk dresses develope and were often looked down upon; and so forth... And all is intertwined....

Hi Anna! I would certainly wear that jacket- very cool! Thank you for letting us have a thorough look at it. I've been wondering lately about whether to leave or remove gathering threads. I generally remove them from sleeves but have left them in bottom ruffles and considered them an extra reinforcement of the gathers. I figured it may be historically accurate to leave them in for that reason. Also, removing the thread- even for re-use- may weaken the thread itself with wear, making it less reliable, so it may be more useful and less wasteful to leave it in, especially from a peasant/workwear perspective, which I tend toward. Thank you for the P.O. box address- I may send you a postcard from Canada! Take care. :)

I would definitely wear a jacket like this in day to day life :) My favorite part was the buttons. Even though they are plastic not glass, the design still reminds me of some Czech glass buttons that I once bought for jewelry-making. The style of the jacket itself reminds me of the 1870s or 1880s. Is it possible that the jacket is older than 1930s, but the buttons were replaced in the 1930s?
@maggiekedves3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about the same, if like the daughter or granddaughter of the owner fixed it up with new buttons.
@elzabets3 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking this, and that the sleeves may have been shortened slightly at the same time from the shoulder (as the second wearer, needing the darts, may have also been a little more petite in other ways).
@PrettyShepherd3 жыл бұрын
It does seem like the buttons are original, and even the dart looks like it was fist sewn before the sleeve was added (there's a bit of dart stitching at the underarm, which has been caught in the arm seam). The thing is, women in Transylvanian villages still wore folk costumes like this *on a daily basis* up until the '70s. So even though the style of the jacket resembles the one that came into fashion through "Victorian"/"Edwardian" figure-hugging jackets, it was, most likely, made decades later.
@ginadelfina58873 жыл бұрын
@@PrettyShepherd So interesting; I didn't realize that the style was retained in village clothing even up to the 70s. Such a beautiful style.

The jacket from design and with possible alterations over time would be between late 1920s to 1950s. I am no expert but based on the buttons, the design of the jacket, and that typically rural styles tend to be 15 years behind styling of city styles. If I was a woman or wore femine styles I would wear that jacket. I love the colors.

She was self-taught it came to sewing because her parents were poor. One paycheck. Four daughters. She found a new purpose for old clothes. She was a very creative person.
