@@lanay237 The simplest way is to get a 100V converter transformer rated for the heater load. Iffen you know how to do basic electrical, you can wire up a 16V or 24V buck/boost transformer to make a bucking supply as this is a lot cheaper and lighter. If your mains feed runs a bit hot (125V or more), use a 24V transformer. If on the low side (115V or below), use a 16V transformer. Either one will work if your mains potential is around nominal. Remember that the transformer needs to be rated for the load.

We are just using an ikea rug that we had before. The chairs we got from ikea too, because it was way cheaper. The key though is a good thick seat cushion!
@andreajohnson60303 жыл бұрын
I sit on a floor cushion on the floor and only use a rug to help insulate the space (I sit on title), but I've sat on the floor for years. Tatami absolutely are expensive and can be difficult to maintain, but if you take care of them, they can last something like two decades. I don't suggest it, though, unless you have a physical store you can go to and discuss proper care for them. My cushion isn't all that thick but I don't find that a problem. My partner, who does not sit on floors regularly, usually has their legs fall asleep, while I don't. I do, however, move around a lot -- it's one of the reasons I sit on the floor in the first place -- and use a couple of random throw pillows that I'll prop my knees up on sometimes when sitting. I don't even use back support, but mostly because I always put off buying a chair (I also planned to use an ikea chair without legs). With quarantine, I haven't had the chance to check out which would be comfortable for me. I suspect if you are not used to sitting on the floor, you could find more information from folks who learned to do it for meditation. There are lots of Westerners who culturally don't sit on the floor who have had to learn to do such for meditation, so there is a lot of resources out there.

@andreajohnson60303 жыл бұрын
They're designed to have zero clearance and to be mounted upside down: there's a little fan that blows the heat away from the heating element, so the top of it doesn't get too warm. I just reached down and touched mine, and even the frame on the bottom/front of the kotatsu heating element doesn't get hot enough to burn. Thank gd, as I regularly bump into it. An important note is that you absolutely should use a converter to be safe, as we are talking about heaters. The higher voltage is like using water with higher water pressure for something designed for a lower water pressure. That said, I do not use a converter, even though that is dangerous. I do not use the highest settings, as the difference in home voltage means that the heater will got hotter than it would on the corresponding setting if used in Japan. This means the lifespan of the heating element will be shortened and there's more likely to be a failure that could cause a fire. It is not safe to use any heating elements with voltages they're not designed for. I have not used a converter before because I used to be too broke to afford one. This conversation has reminded me that I need to buy one.
@randacnam7321 Жыл бұрын

Kotatsu is a primitive thermal insulation method, so it's nothing special. Just put a large blanket on your desk and you're done. Korsi has been used in Persia for a very long time. When a heater is attached, there have been many cases of burns in the past, so the output is less powerful with the latest product.
@BumblingTourist3 жыл бұрын
The added heat is lovely though when the house is so cold in winter here!!
@andreajohnson60303 жыл бұрын
Primitive is not the word I would use. It's an old idea, and yes, Persia and many other places have come up with similar ideas, but kotatsu (and I assume it's the same for modern korsi heaters) are more than just space heaters with a blanket thrown on a desk. Electric kotatsu heating elements have no required clearance; they are designed to be mounted on the bottom of desks or tables, and fires are very rare. It is easy to substitute a desk or low table for the table part of a kotatsu. I personally use an IKEA lack coffee table, a quilt I bought on clearance and the board that would have been the table's shelf as the hard surface on top of the quilt. My partner finally caved to the cold, and I put one together for them using a desk as the main part of the frame. In both cases, however, I used a heating element designed for kotatsu, as I know that misusing heaters is dangerous. So while the idea for kotatsu may be very old, the heaters themselves have evolved over the years and are quite modern. Also, kotatsu refers to the table as a whole with the heating element (the name is usually not written with Chinese characters, or kanji, but when it is, the characters mean "flame" and "foot heater"), so putting a blanket over a desk would not be a kotatsu. I am not as familiar with korsi, so I do not know what the heating elements used for modern korsi look like and can't speak to their safety, but as for kotatsu, the heating element has a cage that can be touched without burns. Even the "top" or back of the heating element doesn't get too hot, as the hot air is blown down.
@BumblingTourist3 жыл бұрын
@@andreajohnson6030 Yes! The one we have is very safe and it is virtually impossible to burn yourself because of the grate over the heater, and the design. It doesnt stay on constantly either, but maintains the heat by switching on and off.😊

This is pretentious and feels like cultural appropriation. Kotatsu tables is one of those things that makes sense to use if you are used to them since childhood. Obviously the people in the video grew up with western furniture. Think about another situation. People in Canada visiting their friends in the video. They are used to sitting on chairs with reclining backs. You going to make them fold their legs on the floor and explain why you needed that kotatsu table. They even purchased chairs for proper spine support and chose not to attach the feet to the chairs. May as well have bought a normal table and attached a heater to it and say like, let’s be honest, what you are used to.
