FEATURED WATCH OF THE WEEK: Patek Philippe Complications ref. 5180/1R
Patek Philippe let loose into the watchmaking world yet another exquisite edition of the celebrated Complications - ref. 5180/1R. Released in 2017, this svelte and ultra-intricate model sports a lustrous precious metal finish and an entirely skeletonized dial and movement.
Measuring just 2.53mm thick, Patek describes the movement as “ultra-thin,” and we couldn’t agree more. It is housed within a case measuring just over 6mm thick, creating a watch that sits remarkably flush against the wrist. The matching multi-link bracelet drapes comfortably around the wrist for an overall enjoyable wrist-wearing experience.
However, the star of the show is the beautifully decorated caliber 240 self-winding mechanical movement. It recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and is housed within what is possibly one of Patek’s most incredible timepieces yet.
The breathtaking movement can attribute its unique appearance to over 130 hours of painstaking hand-engraving, featuring swirls of delicate filigree and a winding rotor embellished with the famous Patak Philippe Calatrava cross logo.
In general, watches with skeleton dials are a delight to examine and wear as one observes the intricate dance of gears and springs. Although arguably impractical for most occasions, the Patek Philippe model takes the experience to another level with an impossibly beautiful finish.
The mechanical movement is more than just a work of art. It’s also incredibly functional, featuring a convenient minimum power reserve of up to 48 hours.
The movement almost appears to float and is anchored to the bezel via arms that also serve as the hour markers, creating perfect symmetry and maintaining the entirely see-through aesthetic of the watch.
Other features include a stunning polished 18k rose gold finish, sapphire crystal, water resistance up to 30 meters, and a handsome, round case measuring 39mm in diameter. The matching rose gold bracelet is secured by a reliable fold-over clasp.
We rarely come across timepieces like this Patek, but when we do, we jump at the opportunity to review it in depth for our loyal viewers.
