I think at the time chipboard was considered a good sound deadening material , even over plywood . Obviously over time manufacturers have moved away from that idea , and even employ solid wood even in speakers . But obviously this is only possible with modern construction techniques , be interesting to know what the new bases are made of . Probably high quality ply as you would expect Ian

Right on Ian...i wanted to let you know about Angela Gilbert Yeung here in Canada, a absolute Tesla of audio engineering a super genius who plays with ideas in audio and implements them building gear that is and are Dragon slayers ...the Farads involved are epic and outrageous but the phenomenon that is created by this vast Farad boost creates killer sound and this person also can build upgrade cap packs that can be added to regular HiFi equipment, the house this person owns is called The Toy House and AGY built a turntable stand out of cinder blocks starting in the basement and built up through the floor at 13 ft tall and filled with sand and gravel making a dense inert stand that cannot be matched lol. I love it hee hee Check out Angela Gilbert Yeung HiFi Ian a fascinating person indeed
