Thats cool. I had that version of the Chatanooga set in around 1981 to 1982.i remeber playing with it for about 3 weeks then the traction tires wore and it quit moving and i was about 8 so i didnt know how to fix it nor did my mom lol, so i eventually sold it at a yard sale i wish i hadnt now.. Thanks for helping me remember that set.. probably from running it bacward and forward so many times.. it was an ok set but my bachmann Silverado set was so much better.

I had the 1979 version of this train. I was About 5 at the time, but significantly advanced for my age. I also had a Silver Streak, and Blue and Yellow Santa Fe that came with the AHM Tony the Tiger Train Set that had all the Kellogg's cars. I think you had to save box tops and send them in with some cash for shipping and handling to get that one. anyway, back to the Chatanooga, you had to remove the bell, and install the small funnel, then add a couple of drops of oil to it to get it to smoke. needless to say, i ran it all the time and ran out of the smoke liquid. I believe that we used baby or mineral oil in it to make it smoke after i ran out of the stuff Tyco sent in the package. i cannot even imagine trying to sell this train set to kids these days, every mother on earth would be trying to sue you because the "smoke" will give you cancer or some other dumb reason like that.

My parents got me and my brother an O Scale Lionel Super Chief Passenger set for Christmas in 2007, both of us were seven and we noticed that the set said “for ages 14 and up.” We told him about it as we were 7 at the time and he didn’t care as he knew we would be take care of it. My brother now has that set and it is still in excellent condition.

I had this same set. Just dug it up earlier in the year, replaced the traction tires repaired the split gears and wheels with CA. It runs ok, not sure how long the wheels will hold up we'll see. Then I saw a Beat up Clementine on eBay and picked it up cheap. Did the same drive resto. Unfortunately the front was missing the steps and the front of the boiler. I made a boiler front from styrene and brass pieces, it came out ok ish. I also cut the frame and shortened the pilot to tighten up the look. More like the USRA. It actually looks decent. They make fun resto projects. Thanks for the memories with the set unboxing!

I had the Santa Fe Flyer set back in the late 70's/early 80's. Used to set it up for the holidays. Nowadays i have trains mostly from Rivorossi, Walther's , MDC/Roundhouse amongst others.

That one is an Oldie but Goodie.i had almost the exact same one.but instead of the triple exxon,i had the triple Coca Cola with the Babe Ruth Chug chug.that was back in 1978 i think.i remember that Christmas Morning.Tyco was the Bomb then.but the electronic kids of today, have no clue what a train set was,let alone the tyco trains.unless you educate them what it was like back in the day when you were just a little spring in tennessee.Tyco trains are etched in my brain.will never forget.

For all its faults, Tyco is the reason a lot of people are into model railroading today. When I got back in to the hobby a couple years ago it was my memory of my old Silver Streak set, that I still have, that pulled me back. Thank for watching!

As near as I can tell this set when new didn't have that triple dome Exon car. Its not in the Tyco catalog. My guess is that whoever owned it before me just put that car in the box.

I’ve got the same loco. Was interested to see how yours ran cause mines a little rough hahah. I have new traction tires but boy that tender loves to shake. Pretty sure it’s just an inefficient motor. Also, I’m sure it’s been said, but the smoke fluid goes where the bell is. You remove it, put some drops in, and put the bell back on! How’s yours smoke? Mines very very light and I’m not sure if that’s normal or it needs work!

Thanks for that tip on the smoke, I just assumed the smoke stack is where it went, shame on me for that. LOL. I have never used it as I just don't like the smell. :)

@@VintageRoadRail ahh, I get that. Some do smell weird, I’ve always loved that smell tho. I thought it didn’t smoke at first, but I did some googling and found a forum explaining how to and I was mind blown hahah.

A friend gave me this set no outter box but have the smaller boxes. It was also missing the hopper car. Im sure i can find 1 to complete the set. Oh and the locomotive did run for a while but a wire broke at the plate on the trucks. But the set ran.

I think its a great looking set. If you still have the locomotive, all is not lost. It can be repaired. Here is a link to servicing the locomotive. I used this as a guide to replacing the traction tires. It doesn't show how to repair the wire, but thats just a quick solder job. its getting inside thats a pain. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eITRf52AnZaImLc

I use to own that actual Tyco train before back then. How ever Tyco trains locomotives that had power torque motors where 100% garbage quality. Sure they had nice detailed locomotives. But there power torque motors sucked really bad. They where poor quality and they where terrible runners. The Tyco trains red box era aka know as Manatua Tyco trains where ok but had a better motor. But Tyco trains did have good looking rolling stock and accessories. Just the locomotives with power torque sucked really bad. There quality was not quite good as Athearn blue box locomotives.
