I can understand electricians slagging this guys work off as he obviously is no electrician, but i can only speak from personnel experience regarding tradesmen, i have used many over the yrs as i have always thought its best to do things by the book, but like a lot of other comments i have read below, how much can you trust a qualified plumber/electrician/window fitter/roofer - in my experience i have yet to find a good one, i tend to have to go round putting the work right cos they just have no pride or time to do the job they were paid to do, plumbers i have used have left radiators un tightened/ a wood burning stove fitter nearly burnt our house down and i am still waiting on an electrician to come and finish a job he started 3 yrs ago - and so called experts wonder why folk DIY !

2 bad things about this video: SWA gland should be earthed and cable secured close to CU. Socket and light cable should go through separate glands from CU and lighting cable should go through separate gland to light switch( no need for switch with rcd anymore) rest all good. Do not listen to stupid comments. Good job!

Seeing as amendment 3 came into force, when installing a new consumer unit you must use new cable/colours and the top of the unit must not be broken unless it is completely necessary in order to keep the fire integrity

Nicely explained video, I know you’re not qualified like you state but this still helps a lot of people who are trying to cut down on sparks costs by running the cables themselves and installing the switches and sockets. Then I think most people will at least have the common sense to get it checked out by a qualified electrician, well I hope so any way. So many of us watch these videos because of the cost of a decent qualified electrician is astronomical then it’s a crap shoot whether they’re any good or just some one that dropped out of college after a few classes. And to all the sparks and anyone else criticising this video could you please add the links to all of your helpful and informative videos that you’ve put on here to help out the average joe, would really appreciate it.lol.

There’s a reason good electricians charge what they do, it because they have served at least a three year apprenticeship and are continually keeping there qualifications up to date. I agree there are a lot of bad tradesmen out there and it messes things up for the rest of us. But the workman ship in this video is shocking, the whole installation would fail a electrical condition report!

Hi this my second comment. My first comment was made just after watching the video, I have the same small consumer unit but the instructions (included) show a much larger one which is more complicated. So the video clearly shows the connections to be made which was what I needed to know(what to do) . Having made my comment I then read all the other viewer comments which picked up the issues concerning the installation and now I have a good idea of how to avoid his mistakes (how to do it) . Therefore I feel confident to install my cu in my garage and wire a lighting circuit and a socket circuit (using trunking). But the connection to the main building (house) is a bit of a mystery as I inherited a rusty steel conduit with many bends which seems impossible to feed the cable through, so maybe armoured cable would be a better solution especially as it will not be visible and possibly it would be more adaptable for dealing with garden redesign (change of levels) in the near future. So I feel confident to do most of the job and get my (trusted) electrician to do the last bit and make sure it's right. To sum up. The video showed me what I needed to do. The comments showed me how to do it. And the trade will make sure that it is safe. P. S. I have a T. E. C. diploma in electronics and communications engineering from the mid 80s so I can remember a few things from all them years ago!

Watched with interest . I'm quite handy & have done a lot of electrical work , indoors also my home bar in the garage . I've a big connection to the building trade , my late father was a bricklayer my late fathering law was a good sparks all his life . One thing is for sure , electrical work should be the most respected . It is very dangerous in many ways . If I do any electrical work I will only work to my ability & understanding . When my father-in-law was with us he was always there for advice .

Not sure if it's been mentioned but you really should have a grommet between socket and light fused switch otherwise the cable rubs against the cut out hole in the metal and is a point of weakness. Also, personally I like to connect the SWA shielding to earth as well. You can get a ring that fits around the thread on the top of the glanding inside the CU for a wire link to the Earth block.

it would be easy for me find a load of problems being an electrician, but that aside why do people always want to put consumer units/fuse boards in the most difficult places, its a lot easier installing them at chest height, although inside a house they should be mounted between 1350 - 1450mm, and thats to the switches, just for future reference.

The one thing I would strongly suggest you change is to use conduit instead of nail fixed clips, I just wouldn't trust the nails to stay in the masonry. That aside, electricity goes where you want and not where you don't want, so, good enough I guess.

I need another switch to connect in to my garage sockets. I put them in . I know all about electrics ,but know not to tamper with my consumer unit. When I moved into my house there was already a lighting circuit outside with trip switch in the consumer unit . This enabled me to install further lighting in the garage that was built later. I have dual switch lights and one pair that work on one switch. Further connections are made via junction boxes for my security lighting and interior lighting i installed in my conservatory. All correct thickness of cable has been used I just am thinking of leaving the sockets to a qualified electrician who has to sign it off anyway !!!!

I don't understand why there are so many negative comments about this installation, and before y'all start complaining at me I do not see anything wrong with his work. Seriously, who fucking cares? I mean, he may have used cable ties to keep the T&E's together but overall his work is actually not that bad. I wired up ring mains and a lighting circuit in my shed over 10 years ago and guess what, nothing has burnt down and my electrics have been working perfectly ever since.

Well you know, it's funny. I started learning how to service and repair my car two years ago and my local garage, to whom I had previously been taking it, started reminding me that DIY work is highly dangerous. Apparently by learning new skills, taking my time and doing it myself I was placing myself and my family at risk. Two years on my cars (4 or them) are fine, we are all fine and I've saved _thousands_ of pounds. I'm not an electrician so cannot judge the quality of this work, but it's always interesting to see professionals wade in and kick DIY folk. Go and look at plumbing and welding videos and it's much the same. (I do my own plumbing and welding and, strangely, the quality is better than that which I previously paid for, just like the vehicle maintenance. You 'professional' car mechanics who don't grease bolts when you put them in, you know who you are.) Just watch me get flamed for this.... ;-)

Paul... that's is the problem, what he has done is unsafe, this is a dangerous instruction video and the crucial point about this video which is good earthing has been botched and may present a real risk to family or property in the event of a fault, it is clear you have little electrical background as you probably don't see the glaringly dangerous part of this install.

You could have used a normal light switch if you brought the power to the switch instead of still using the fused spur. As long as its on a B6 breaker

Can't put a price on safety however at the same time if someone has taken the time to learn the safe way to wire new circuits etc then that's good for them but I would still lay to have it tested and rectified if need be by a competent electrician. If it doesn't comply with current regs and theres a fire the insurance company will use that as an excuse to not pay out which could be very costly.

I think the reason this person did the work himself is because if he called out a qualified electrician the electrician would have done a worse job. Just like you get with any other so called professionals in their field of work. The problem is nobody works with pride anymore, it’s all about getting the work done as quickly as possible and then on to the next job. Get as many bucks in as you can, as quickly as you can. There are a few comments on here from people who know their stuff, probably certified electricians, would you have done the job to spec? How many corners would you have cut? Many I think.

There was pretty much no point in installing a sub main CU since you could have just used the existing switched fused comnection to fuse down for the lights. Would have been more worth your while paying out for a fuseboard change at your intake (if you didnt already have RCD protection and a metal board)

Just as proof as to why many people do their own work, is tradesmen ...not all, but I would say more than half, can't be bothered to do the job properly, and that's when they turn up, I got in touch with a sparky last week an asked if could fit me an updated consumer unit in our garage, as the one in their is about 50yrs old, no problem he said, I will pop round over the weekend to look at the job and give a quote on the work, weekend come and gone no show, then 3 days later he gets in touch to say he was busy, well we are all busy, but a tradesmen supposed to keep a diary and work to it, my thoughts were, if you can't be bothered to get in touch regarding our appointment or be bothered to turn up..whats your work going to be like, especially if I need to call you back for something you've done that's not inadequate ?

Why mount the consumer unit up in a corner where it could be inaccessible if the shed gets filled with items for storage... Why not leave it adjacent the existing switch and sockets where its easy to access in the event of a tripped breaker?

Electricians don't care about what will be done in the future. All the work needs to do is meet the current requirements and safety restrictions. What someone in the future does it up to them.

I have built a shed/out house on to the back of my house and I want to use the power from an existing shed which is a 6mm cable running from a 32amp fuse on the main board in the house should I put a second consumer unit in the shed or just wire it straight to the sockets and lights? If so what consumer unit should I get?

+Craig Attrill depending on the location of the of the shed, if it's right next to the house then you could drill a hole from the house to the shed and run a cable or if the new shed is further away I would run a armoured cable from your existing shed to your new shed, but best to get an electrician to advise.

+Craig Attrill no problem so in the shed you probably have the 6mm cable going into the consumer unit and then that provides power to a socket via a 2.5mm cable so you could just connect another 2.5mm cable from there. Again this is just me giving a idea without actually seeing what you have, nothing more always consult a qualified electrician. Don't forget to like and subscribe!

Okay, so in some ways, this was not the greatest job ever, but clearly this guy was trying.Lots of people have made very valid points here, but in the guys defence there are 3 criticisms that are especially harsh :-1) he had the work checked by a qualified electrician - or so it is stated - just this doesn't show in the video2) I gather (not sure) he had not installed the original cable - so issues such as not having the yellow core marked with Earth Sleeving, and no grommets between the two boxes were not of his creation ? 3) The SWA cores not being resleeved in the CU - yes this may not be ideal - but really, is this going to cause any confusion / problems - I'd be more concerned if this cable used the harmonised colours, as this is much more confusing.4) someone said the cables should be afforded mechanical protection - this is opinion only, since when were cables clipped on the surface not allowed ? Isn't their visibility deemed adequate protection still ? Yes, sure the job isn't ideal & should really have been done professionally - but aside from the bad job of fitting the SWA gland, I reckon it was a reasonable stab. So what if he doesn't have VDE tools. The CU I think is better than the old install - wonder if it was a 13amp fuse in that FCU ?Now it is RCD protected & it may not have been before ? (who knows) I do feel though that only videos demonstrating the very best practices should be available - people will watch this & do God knows what. Reading through the comments people are seeking your advice (though you state they should consult a spark - will they ?) Lastly, B***me2ice, or whatever your name is (stupid f'ing name), you have too much to say for yourself, who the f*ck are you, and why don't you shut your cake 'ole. Don't reply - I don't give a flying f*ck what you think. Geek Street - good effort, but your work isn't perfect, hope you aren't helping too many people to do this kind of thing for themselves (they'll do 95% of the job you did, and then show someone else who'll do 95% of that job, and so on down). I think this video should come down for that reason - sorry, not nitpicking. ps - I know I put lastly & then went further - but it is too much of a pain to retype / change

The wires in the gland are crossed. I do all my own work as I don't trust so called professional at all these days. They may know the theory but their practical leaves a lot to be desired.

U should of doubled over the cables which were terminated alone so a loose connection is less likely to occur

Sorry to say but most of what u have done is shocking, you should be making your entry's where practible possible to the bottom as this requires less of IP rating and meaning u have less chance of anything entering the board weather inside or not. Your armoured gland should have a bango to connect the armouring to the board, the armouring should be prevented from twisting round the gland. Your should only put one cable in a stuffer unless specified by the manufacturer. The fuses are know as MCBS

As a qualified electrician there is NO WAY you would get that signed off in that state. No grommets between the socket and switched spur,that swa gland is shocking,terrible terrible standard of work.

Nah consumer unit a good height but best job is a 20mm plastic conduit along the top of the wall into the side of consumer unit fit a Tbox and drop down a 20 mm plastic conduit to sockets and switches use 2.5 and 1.5 singles cables also pvc socket box and swich box they are unbreakable easy and neat job and looks good the light switch at your door or doors would be a normal switch not a switch spur unit

This dude has actually done not bad considering he is not a spark!He didn't cut enough of the armour off though, even considering it will be hidden by the shroud. Also why does he put the box in a corner? Would next to the door not be better? but all in all he done not bad.

210 Electricians with OCD got triggered by the old cable colors then moaned about cable ties. The worst part was the African grade light fitting but everyone was too concerned with how tidy he did up a gland lol

OK, as many have said, this is not a good guide on ‘how to’ but I didn’t hear him ask any of you to certificate it for him. He didn’t anally adhere to professional standards, and wasn’t particular about his tacking cable or neatly terminating or earthing the shielding the steel armour which is 8 times less conductive than copper and it had 3 cores anyhow so wasn’t using it as the earth to feed the consumer unit. I saw nothing dangerous - if anything all he did was waste his own time & money as what was there was adequate for its use - did make me laugh how he still had a plug-in RCD in the socket at the end after installing the CU with an RCD though.
