Initial review (2 days wear)- Comparing to other “barefoot” boots- The sole: Some ground feel, less than many others, which is just what I wanted. No heel rise- Check! Toe box: Tapers more than other barefoots, but not narrow. Similar to a Keen wide. If you have EE feet your toes are not going to “splay” like maybe in a Xero boot. On the stylish-to-clown shoe scale, they lean a bit toward stylish. Insole: None. You may like this. If not, an insole that is not too thick can be added. So far I am liking an old Keen insole in mine, which fits without alteration by the way, indicating the toe box width. The leather: Not heavy enough to use as a work boot, “These boots are made for walk-in’, and that’s just what I’ll do”. Only Con so far: the heel pull tab is a decoration, not a heel pull tab. Being a leathercrafter, I immediately added a leather finger loop to the existing tab. I suggest Jim Green do the same. Conclusion: It’s not a hard-use boot, it’s not a chukka, it’s not a mukluk, It’s not a moccasin. It’s a Barefoot African Ranger, almost in a class by itself. Rugged enough for woods walking, stylish enough (for me) to wear to weddings, funerals, and church.

I had pretty much given up trying to find a good zero drop wide toe hiking boot, and was seriously considering a pair of Iron Rangers for hiking... These are basically the PERFECT hybrid of a Boulder Boot and an Iron Ranger. I think I like the look of stiffer toe cap of the original shoe better, but I'm sure I'll prefer the softer fit after a few miles of wear.

I got my pair of these a few weeks ago and really really like them. I’ve wanted a zero drop, minimalist, good ground feel boot for a while. And when I say boot, I mean a real boot. You have delivered that and I am thankful. With that, I would like to share my feedback on two aspects of the Barefoot Ranger. First, these boots have a slight “clown shoe” feel. If you could cut the sole just a little closer to the welt I think it would make a big improvement in the aesthetics. Second, in a short boot like this I would like to see all eyelets, no speed hooks. These boots can be worn loosely with no laces at all. With all eyelets it gives the option to tie a knot in the ends of the shoe laces so the boots can be worn loose but the laces are still contained. If you made the boots like that, I’d buy pairs in every color you made available.

I live in the PNW and do a lot of outdoor activities and the barefoot offerings for outdoor action are on the flimsy side. The Jim Green boots are exactly what I have been wanting! I wear them everyday, at least 5 miles of walking a day, I clean them accordingly. I could keep rambling on about them! Great boots! Thank you for your input on these boots!! Well done!!

I really love this idea. I've been wearing Lems for about 3 years now, and I can never go back to a shoe that isn't foot shaped, and I definitely don't care for a heel toe drop any more, and they have the right compromise between cushioning and being extremely thin and barefoot. But I've always been disappointed by the lack of leather, classical construction "barefoot" shoes out there. They tend to be synthetic, glued together, and disposable while still commanding a pretty penny.

I've said it already but this appears to be exactly what I'm looking for in a boot for daily use. I don't need a rigid boot with massive tread every time I go outside. I need something to protect my feet from sharp rocks and branches. But something that's comfortable and (relatively) light to walk in but durable enough to withstand the rigors of hiking/walking in the woods. Something that won't easily be damaged from abrasion. And if that's not enough, they're able to be serviced! I slept on the initial release of these but I'll be pre-ordering a pair soon.

These African rangers are awesome. I got mine in early Oct. I've been wearing them daily since. Very comfortable. Zero heel slip, which is amazing. Lots of ground feel without feeling too hard. I find myself putting these in at 8am and leaving them on till 7 or 8pm without feeling like they are heavy or hot. So far these are everything I want in a boot. Comfy, tall, wrap your foot well, feels like a leather sock. Definitely a great boot for those wanting a thoughtful blend of heritage craftsmanship and barefoot theory. My only gripe is the unstructured toecap. My toe cap creased day one on my left foot and looks "less heritage" right off the bat. Still love the fit and comfort, but if I were to buy again I would choose a structured toe cap to keep a more "dressy" look. I understand the design decision of having the unstructured toe to maintain feel, but personally I want my toe cap to be more structured. I want the creases to develop behind the cap stitch and not through the cap. Just a preference. Overall these are incredible. Nothing exists in the market that I'm aware of that compliments heritage and barefoot ethos as well as these. Well done. I will be ordering another pair from Jim Greene in the future. (Love how they allow a custom order process)

I purchased the African Ranger upon your recommendation. The are a well made simple boot. The insole was poor as you mentioned so I swapped out with a cheap insole. The boots are super comfortable and I feel like they will last a long time with minimal care. I am not super hard on boots and very rarely show much wear on the soles. Being they can be resoled I expect a long life out of them. I am a backpacker and like the Ranger so much I would wear it on a trip, they are reasonably light but still sturdy enough. This new version is super interesting and would make for an even lighter boot. I am going to look at getting a pair. I would love to hike the Appalachian Trail with a pair, I think with insole swaps you could wear a pair the majority of the trail. Lots of thru hikers are wearing trail runners and from what I have seen they are overpriced and hikers are only getting 500 miles or less. I think a light boot would be a great bridge between cost and durability. Even with swapping out insoles and a resole they would be a bargain.

For 10 years I have been wearing zero drop, wide toe box (but supportive) running and trail runner shoes for casual wear and hiking, and more recently minimalist oxfords and weight training shoes. After seeing the JG BAR videos, I thought they would be a good boot for working in our yard. It's a fenced PNW west side 1 acre lot with 75% being 2nd growth native trees and thick underbrush on a fairly flat but uneven ancient glacial moraine covered by a thin layer of soil that I cut - maintain trails through, and clean up deadfall. I also thought they'd be a good "around camp" recovery boot after a day of bushwhacking to fly fish high gradient streams, and rockhounding on steep rocky slopes that were once ancient riverbeds where broken in old school all leather Euro alpine climbing boots provide me the best combination of support with ankle flexibility. The excellent leather, simple construction, including easily replaceable soles that quickly shed dirt, mud and debris, and water repellency are great. But I discovered that I needed more arch support. A pair of Sole Dean Karnazes heat moldable footbeds used in my climbing boots is providing the solution to the one and only issue I had with the BAR. Well Done!!

I wear the SOLE insoles in mine. Gives them just the right amount of support.

I just ordered some brown ones and added some brown strings. I'm excited for these. I just transitioned to barefoot at the beginning of the year just after buying some Thursday boots last year that I'll have to sell now because they no longer fit and still are basically brand new and barely worn. I also have some xero leather boots and im currently about to buy some lems boulder boots. That way i have barefoot boots for different occasions.

A resoling video would be awesome! If I can cut those costs out I'd definitely buy some decent boots

I think it's quite clear that the way boots are built today is more or less wrong and I think you've fixed those wrongs here! :) I've been waiting for this kind of boot for ages, so I will definitely order. On sizing though it's a bit scary, I've ordered twice from Jim Green before, in one case a custom order with some of the same changes as here, and the sizing of those boots are hugely different. To the extent that one is way to loose, the other too small although they are marked with the same size. I guess I'll have to take a bit of a gamle on these..

I would love to see you do a video about the Jim Green AR8 boot. It is probably my most comfortable and durable boot in my collection. I wish it wasn't so wide in the toe box, at least in terms of style but my feet love all the extra room and is for sure one of the reasons they are so comfortable. I own a lot of Thursday boots because I liked how they are a bit more stylish. Both pairs of my JG boots look and feel so different I almost like them more. Don't waste your money on doc martins or solivare boots. Get some AR8s from Jim Green.

I watched this as I am eagerly awaiting my barefoot ranger boots to arrive. I feel confident in their quality because of your criteria in previous videos. I'm curious if you work with my blacksmith friend in Salt Lake. My wife's uncle Jared. It would be cool to see a video with both of you if so

I’m a retired US Army Infantryman and I’m curious if the Vietnam era Jungle Boots and similar subsequent designs the Army issued would be considered as ‘barefoot boots’? Here’s what I experienced in 2003-04 when we were deployed to Iraq for 15 months. We were issued desert tan colored jungle boots that had suede finish. Being one the handful of Gulf War Veterans on this deployment we all agreed pretty quickly that our feet were getting hammered by the hot, rough terrain, we could feel every damn rock and crack and couldn’t wait until we could take them off and elevate our feet. After being in Iraq for a couple months a small makeshift PX was opened up at the BIAP and operated out of cargo containers and that’s where we found some Belleville’s and it felt like strapping on a mattress to each foot. Our attitudes improved dramatically after that and could hang in there with the young ones. That’s where I learned that the proper boot for the environment is critical. As an Infantryman, we also do ruck marches quite a bit and if a Soldier was wearing poorly fitting or cheap boots, it would cause him to drop out pretty quickly. There’s almost a religious doctrine on how NCO’s would inspect a Soldiers boots before long marches to make sure he wouldn’t injure himself by walking 12 to 24 miles in painful boots. Thanks for educating me on the various boots out there, I had no idea about the boots those rangers wear.
