Blue Ridge guitars I think is the name of the Chinese outfit that makes really good Martin copies. All their guitars have bone nuts, thin nitrocellulose finishes and premium tonewoods.

After a lot of complaints they send me a new guitar, this one is perfect. The other guitar which i had custom made with all solid koa wood sounds awsom after I repaired it, the bridge came off after a few weeks. It was glued with cyano acrylate glue on top of the finish. I can compare the two guitars. They look similar but the all solid guitar sounds much better
@johnelrick89459 жыл бұрын
I'd doubt that it's genuine Koa. It could be another species of Acacia from elsewhere in Asia. Real Koa is a Hawaiian wood as well as being somewhat endangered. Any acoustic guitar whose body is made entirely of Koa/Acacia is going to sound very bright.

Hello and thanks for the upload. I am currently contemplating purchasing a chinese Marting D45. . I was informed for them to cover the Martin logo with a piece of paper for customs into the USA. The cost without a hard case is $450.00 vs $9,500.00
@Chinaguitarsceptic7 жыл бұрын
+George Thomas I know its very tempting and actually the acoustics are nearly always better than the electric models, but I urge you to think long and hard as they are still fraught with problems and liable to customs seizure. What's more you can never legally sell them.

The modern builders have gotten so good at matching the grain on the front and back layers for laminates that many luthiers agree it's impossible to tell on visual inspection alone if the back and side wood are all solid
@Chinaguitarsceptic9 жыл бұрын
rmzzz76 Wow! Really? I had not heard that but it sounds highly plausible. I may well have to have a little scratch around inside where it can't be seen to see if I can expose any lamination but from looking the grains match incredibly well. :-)
@rmzzz769 жыл бұрын
Chinaguitarsceptic If it has a cavity for the electronic controls (Eq, etc..) you could remove that and inspect the grain. If the strap button is 1/4" jack, you can also remove it and inspect there with a flash light and magnifying glass.

It sounds Tinny because of the Koa wood throughout the body. It would even sound that way if it had a Spruce Top. Very dense and closed pour wood. Will relax and open up by playing over time bet will always have a strong treble sound
@rjlchristie5 жыл бұрын
It sounds exactly as I expect Koa soundboard to sound, very much inferior to the spruces or cedar. IMO they're suitable only for ukuleles. Nevertheless I'd say these Chinese guitars are are almost criminally good value for money. I have several bespoke luthier made instruments that in some cases cost up 60 times the price of that guitar. Here's hoping the Chinese manufacturers are not exploiting their workforce as does happen in their export apparel and consumer electronics industries.

Just bought the genuine article- a Taylor K224CE and the Koa actually produces a warm, angelic, and unique tone. Thought I was set on a rosewood/ spruce dread, having already owned two vintage mahogany models- a D18 and D40, but the tone blew me away on this. And I am not usually a fan of Taylor's. Better neck than on either the Martin or Guild I had. A koa auditorium is not a rosewood / spruce dread. But it is wonderful in its own right. Less bite in the treble and of course not as loud as a dread. But- the very opposite of tinny. Good guitars have some soul. This one does. The built in electronics? -not terrible either. Not LL Bags great., but better than most. Definitely play any guitar before you buy it. Great advice from this video.. The store had two of the Koa Taylor's in stock. One was significantly better and went home with me . Just saying; don't write off Koa. May ir may not not be a fit for you but it is a worthy alternative. The copy in this video sounds nothing like the original. My vote: don't bother.

I just purchased an unbranded, solid spruce top 110ce copy from AliExpress for $350.00. I had my luthier check it it out before releasing funds. He was impressed with the quality. Wellllll, maybe because I could save $150.00 by buying a copy. And with that considerable savings I could go out and buy an audio interface, a condenser mic and a camcorder. And THAT, I suppose, was the point. I got a beautiful looking and sounding guitar plus all the other goodies. Lol.

Great to see another review. It was interesting to hear your thoughts on the D45 you bought over a year ago and how the neck is causing some issues now. I have a couple from china and feel pretty much the same as you. They are OK for a lark but seriously... by name brand and they will last a lifetime. I doubt very much any of these chinese guitars will hold up over time. I just bought a Sigma and have my eye on a Taylor 524e. My chinese guitars will be for the campfire or friends to noodle on :)

I really get a lot of good info from your videos, and I really appreciate what you do. I'm beginning to think that spending $550 for a guitar that needs, in some cases, even more money invested to render it "good" is a scary proposition. I thought about getting a Chibson, but having to add an additional $250+, or possibly more, just to make it playable is holding me back. The hit and miss aspect of ordering these guitars gives me pause; though I'll probably do it as a project guitar. Again, incredible videos and thanks for your time and review!

You might want to try ordering a cedar top guitar with no lacker. You will get a much warmer tone.
@Chinaguitarsceptic6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I may do that.
@roadapple666 жыл бұрын
Cedar is used as top material for many brands of classic / Spanish guitars used for fingerstyle playing. It is also used as the top for the Seagull S6 Original. It gives the guitar a very warm tone, with less overall volume. Most all of the better guitar manufacturers have cedar topped guitars in their line. I prefer mahogany, or Koa for the natural compression, mid focused tone range; but I do like the Seagulls / Godin's for their warm, easy tone. YMMV.

Great video!! I actually bought a knock-off Taylor 914CE from a fairly highly rated seller. I customized it to have a one-piece neck, bone saddle, upgraded the preamp, asked for a satin neck (gloss was standard), ebony fretboard (rosewood was standard), rosewood back and sides (mahogany was standard), chrome hardware (gold was standard), and a custom abalone logo. In the end, what I got, was a $500 guitar that played like a $200 guitar with a finish worse than any $99 guitar I've ever seen. The rubber handle of the case makes my hands smell like a burning tire factory, and there's all sorts of debris that was sealed under the finish...and since the neck is satin, they couldn't buff it smooth, either. They also made the front of the headstock in satin which is part my fault, because I didn't tell them to keep that glossy. The nut is also terrible with the neck being 1-5/8" wide (even more narrow than 1-11/16) with the strings cut in even tighter. My fingers turn black from the fretboard, and there is also a chunk taken out of my 7th fret as well. The tuners are stamped "GROVER" but they are clearly knock-offs. The frets are also tiny, poorly-finished, and already tarnished fresh from the case. From across the room, it's stunning. In your hands? It's a joke. I really just bought it for fun and maybe to use as a beater guitar to tide my over until I found a "real" acoustic, but I'm not even sure it's good enough for that. In the end, I bought a REAL Taylor K24CE (with the beautiful sunset-burst edges, and the 1-3/4" nut I love), and it's the most beautiful guitar I've ever owned...even though it costs half as much as my car. Ha! Might just hang this one on the wall as a decoration, and for the story of having a guitar with my own company logo on it. It sounds *ok* for a cheap guitar, but NOTHING like my new Taylor. Volume, sparkle, low-end all fall short of the real thing. Plugged in, I'll admit, it sounds quite nice with the upgraded Fishman system with the internal microphone. edit: Just watched the end of the video. Mine was from Kevin, too. :(

So...this really lives up to the name of your KZbin video channel, doesn't it? I have bought a ton of Asian guitars, and the QA is always a crap-shoot. Some have been great, and others have been horrible. In the process I have discovered that I can buy from a reputable US company cheaper than from AliExpress or Alibaba, and so resolve any issues in a very timely manner. Recently I bought a close-out TAKAMINE GS330S for $180.00, free shipping, no taxes. This is a solid cedar top guitar with HPL back and sides, made in Korea. The workmanship is immaculate, and the guitar sounds as good as a $1000.00 Martin or Taylor. The action is low and the frets are very nicely finished and level with no buzz whatsoever. A very light weight and resonant guitar. It was an amazing bargain. I know that things are a bit different in the UK, and a lot of work goes into finding guitar bargains, so perhaps China is a viable option there. In any event, I appreciate all of the good information and guidance. Thanks.

Paying £320 for a guitar that costs £4,199 is a bargain! I recently bought the 916ce, with added bling (tree of life in abalone ) which I've only seen on older models, also asked it to be made in one piece neck (no scarf or heel joint ) and bone nut, saddle, plus Rosewood back and sides, solid spruce top! for just over $500 inc case! Had it set up and checked at my local shop, then compared it to a £5,199 916ce he had on the wall, guess what very little difference, well not £4,700 difference! You should be telling people who good they are for the money, have bought 12 guitars from China only one not so good one! regards Baz.

I have a 1983 Taylor 810 that I paid $1180 for in 1984. This instrument you are reviewing doesn't qualify as an instrument in comparison. I bought the Taylor because both Gibson and Martin were at that time, variable in quality. I couldn't wait to get the Baggs Electronic pick up out of there, I hated the Grover tuners, installed Fossilized Ivory nut, saddle, bridge pins, and it helped immeasurably in volume, sustain and richness of tone. I fitted a real end pin block, and replaced the Grovers eventually with Waverley vintage style tuners. If I had to do it over again, I would have saved my money and bought a pre-war D18, they were actually within reach of a determined buyer back then, in 1984 $10,000 would buy a pretty good pre war D18, $10,000 wouldn't touch one now. The 810 was better than anything on the market at that time unless you got lucky and found a good Martin or Gibson, they were quite variable in quality in 1984. Martin has greatly improved their quality across the board since then, so has Gibson. The piece of junk that pretends to be a Taylor that you are reviewing is not worth consideration for anything. Your old plywood Yamaha is a solid if pedestrian guitar, they sound OK right out of the box, and can be set up for decent playing. Unfortunately they won't break in, what you have for tone will not change regardless of age, plywood is plywood. Save your money and get a real guitar!

I bought a white case once, but I put it down in my living room and never saw it again....the joys of living in the Great White North. Here's a tip, never set a white case down anywhere inside an igloo....owwww...sigh

Hi, how much does this guitar weigh? Most good guitars are appx 4 lbs. 6 oz. I was considering buying a Koa chinese copy of K24, but the china sales person told me guitar was about 8 lbs heavy.
@rmbeavers8 жыл бұрын
I didn't particularly care for the sound of the thing....especially in comparison to my k22ce, but the look of that guitar + the case + electronics (no matter how crappy), I'd have to say I think it was worth the money (pending you got the rattle taken care of). Nice vid

Though between the fender acustic and the Yamaha acustic the cheeper one is better except I actually like the Yamaha so you really need both and as far as I'm concerned that's all you need acustic wise .

That is a beautiful guitar!

That loose piece inside the guitar might just be a box or case for a 9volt battery to make the electronics work. I've got a yamaha apx10 that works that way. The battery is always coming loose and rattling round inside

Cruz Three Hey Cruz! Yeah it was the electronics and battery bag and I've stuck them both with Titebond now! LOL :-) I'll show you more on coming videos! :-)

Dave Strand Hey Dave thanks for this buddy and glad you are still rocking hard at 60 mate! I can never actually recommend a seller or chinese guitar sue to the QC problems buddy as you know from my videos. However I hope to have some better news about the Milton Telecaster soon ... :-)

Hi there, wow it sure looks pretty, and that case is nice looking to, I like how you have your branding on it, yeah it does need some work done, maybe it needs to settle in a bit? I think it's kind of expensive huh, thanks so much for the video i always look forward to them, glad to see you back making videos ☺

No balance - not a Taylor sound. I have a 514-ce-fltd, the most frighteningly beautiful guitar I have ever heard (though I'm biased). Did you find where the buzz was? Sounded a bit like the body to me.
@Chinaguitarsceptic7 жыл бұрын
+Frank Povah I did find the buzz but can't remember now where it was. I'll have to go back and look at the follow on videos

the thingy sound is based on your lighter strings i believe.
@kirkbolas49855 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comprehensive evaluation. For what it cost you, it’s a decent guitar that apes the looks of the more costly Taylor. I posit that a beginner to intermediate level player could do far worse for the same money. I stopped being a brand bunny several years ago. In my book, if it sounds, feels and plays good, it is good ...all relative to the price point of course.

It 'does' sound pretty nice from what I can tell in earbuds, and has the Koa/Acacia crispness that mahogany/spruce guitars don't have. Kind of doubt it's actually Koa, but Acacia has that dense nature as well, hence the bright tone. Not exactly a cheap Chinese copy, but seems it has the bones to allow you to improve on it for a very good final result. Nice video and I'm subbed because of it.

Jackhayes123 I'm so pleased that there is still so much interest in that. Please don't worry you haven't missed anything. I am still trying to find time to strip back the damaged paint work and will be putting all the work up in coming videos. Please be patient and watch out for some new part-o-caster videos really soon. Cheers CGS :-)

Been a subscriber for a while now. I was wondering if this was a full koa wood guitar or was it laminated koa?
@Chinaguitarsceptic7 жыл бұрын
I think it's laminated with a veneer of Koa type wood. Can't be 100% though without drilling or cutting it. :-O

Okay just got a seller to make a full real Koa wood acoustic of this version for 600 USD. so we will see how it comes out ( with my own logo and head stock) wish me luck!!

Just have to ask since I'm ordering two custom-made guitars (an LP and a V) with my own logo. What did the white case cost and how much extra for the printed logo on it?

The ol' glue and baking soda trick might help, where you fill the body with glue and baking soda, let it set, and toss it off a high bridge into a deep river. Try it.
