This watch has got me thinking about what a unique place the G-Shock Square is in the watch realm. Ironically and technically, the best G-Shock Square is both one of the least expensive ones in basic original resin build, AS WELL AS, one of the most expensive ones being made of superior materials, construction and finishing techniques such as this MR-G. I don't know if you catch my meaning here? The can sit at complete opposite extremes of the G-Shock Square pricing spectrum. Yet, both can be the best representitive G-Shock Square (that one can buy, to be more specific).

I have such a weak spot for the Square. I’m thinking I’d buy one if I found it on sale. The finishing looks beautiful and the multi piece construction stands out to me. The only thing I’m disappointed in is that they didn’t make any adjustments to the module, like giving it more features (a battery indicator is much needed, for example) but also GPS perhaps. I feel like they could’ve made it more technologically compelling for the money all the while still respecting its place from a historical perspective. Premium G-Shocks make more sense than most people can imagine in the first instance. First, whether you are wedded to mechanical watches or not, G-Shocks are strictly grab and go watches. There is no need to wind them or keep them on a winder. Second, they are handsome but under the radar. Nobody ever does a video of a man being shot or mugged for their MR-Gs in contrast to say Rolexes. Third, with a watch service costing more and more often between $800 and $1500 or more depending upon the brand and the level of complications, spending $2500 to $5000 for a premium G-Shock doesn’t seem so crazy. Fourth, the more you know about G-Shock and its creator Kikuo Ibe who is still the G-Shock Creative Director, the more you will realize that G-Shock is in its own way much more important horologically speaking as a brand to millions and millions of more people than Rolex, Patek Phillipe and Grand Seiko. G-Shock is one of the world’s greatest product lines from an industrial design and functionality standpoint in much the way that the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 911 were in the auto space.
@chi10572 жыл бұрын
Not sure about some of your assertions there, but I agree that G Shocks are important, but important because of their place in horology and the watch world. This is outside of what G Shock are respected and known for.

Yes, the price is worth it ! Firstly, looking at the "POTER" version, the watch set a price of $3K-5K for Stainlees Steel without crystal in the second market, so now no one will be wondering about the much better version of the MGR5000B in the titanium edition. As for the Silver version, this is the first edition of Japanese craftsmen. It is the first silver titanium G-Shock 5000-5600 Origin "Square" since 1983. In addition, it ages beautifully. They are worth any price. You will probably never have the opportunity to buy a watch as good as new for the same price you see now. If you ever see it used, it will be at a similar price. Somehow i feel the black version is nicer and easier to differentiate despite the many version of metal that Casio has released. This is a nice concept of reaching the heights of strongest material for metal. I am very excited to see what future lies ahead after this. Casio have been exploring to the death on resin, resin+carbon,then metal, then titanium and now cobarion. I do feel as everyone highlighted the module should not stay the same as the rest lower models. This is practically only upgrading the outer structure of the watch while innards remain the same and fitted with onlylatest module and features without much of a difference. But then again, if they play too much on the display, then the watch would not run as how it suppose to. And as far as i can relate, G-shock only has few models which really does abit like garmin. While the rest of the models , square particularly and probably only one maintained its originality from the 80s.

The higher level of finishing and build quality really shows. I think the silver looks cooler and I think the silver will really show off the unique higher quality better and I think I would want to have that obvious appreciation for the level of workmanship than went into a mid $3k watch. I also think one should approach this like luxury brands that cost $1000s that have essentially an off the shelf ETA or Sellita based movement. There's more to a watch than what runs inside. If you can truly appreciate all the rest of it, you can probably appreciate something like this and be ok paying price to get one. And there are some titanium versions too, but this MR-G is amazing, but 4000 usd. It is clearly a collector item. You have to be very careful to not to scratch it. It is not for me, because my stainless steel one is already has some signs of use. I am more careful with the purple one. But I can't imagine myself to have something like this in the box, but I also can't use it like a g-shock.

I wear my steel square like I would with a resin one. And over 2 years it has scatched. And funny enough, I don't care. It's a G-Shock after all. It has developed more character in my opinion. Years of work in a warehouse, traveling and on the beach. I seriously doubd I would handle a $4000- watch the same way. Most likely it would rarely leave the box. And if I'm not going to wear a G-Shock as a G-Shock, I might as well spend the money on a nice mechanical watch instead.

I own this watch and it is worth the price if you appreciate detailed watchmaking. Using the resin square bezel design as the template for the GMWB metal/ti series is not an ideal way to make a metal watch.
