Visiting out-of-the-way spots in Ireland by slow (very slow) bike or public transport like Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and Bus Éireann.
If you travel on the Dublin-Belfast train you'll pass the picturesque harbour in Balbriggan. If you get off the train and take a closer look, you'll see that it's a working harbour and, for one man, home.
Shane Kennedy lives in a houseboat with a difference: an old British Royal Navy boat there and has been doing so for the past five years. He concedes the boat is a bit of a mess but, slowly but surely, he says, he's getting it seaworthy.
When he does leave Balbriggan, he'll travel to Scotland, where he'll put masts and sails on it and then onto the Mediterranean and, ultimately, to India, where he was born.
Shane says that Fingal County Council want him out of the harbour but he says he provides a service living there: he keeps an eye on the other boats and has called the Gardaí on several occasions. He also says that he helped rescue a young woman who went into the water off the pier.
