This is about $1000 USD today in Dec 2021. I saw some high end chess sets that come with 2 queens of each colour in case a pawn is promoted.

Either prices rose and fell dramatically within the year or your just mistaken about this sets price... i think its the latter since this set is easily found for $230 USD @chesshouse. The chess set is a German Staunton Chess set made by Philos.

@@whatastud1000 This is not the FIDE world champion chess set. He clearly states he paid just $150 for the set. The shipping box, pieces box and board package are all clearly Philos branded... as I stated above this is a German Staunton Chess set made by Philos. If you know chess pieces/knights... those knight pieces are easily recognizable as being a german knight set aka queens gambit set, not the FIDE WC piece set.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to leather underneath the pieces instead of having filt there when playing on a wooden board? What did you pay for this?

Very nice set. I have a few of those Philos storage boxes and they are the best bang for buck in terms of storage box. Excellent size for a study board also. Only thing I would've suggested is to have ordered the board with the algebraic notation option if it was going to be my primary study board.

Thanks. I deliberately ordered the board without notation, in order to better learn coordinates. I want to know where each square is without having to look at the side notation. Another reason is that in this way I don't have to turn the board around if I want to play as black.
