I agree. Chess sets have no reason to be covered in gems. They are transparently inaccessible, eat up way too much time and resources, and don't appeal to anyone who would actually use them. At least the $500 and $1000 FIDE boards have some appeal to a chess player, because FIDE. These gems, however, don't even contribute much to the aesthetics of the pieces anyways, so why should any chess player care? Chess sets have no right to even be a cent above $1000.

....what is it with people thinking that covering something with what essentially looks like rhinestones on disco pants, makes it worth so much? It feels only expensive for those diamond encrusted ones just because there are so many diamonds more than any artistic value. The 5mil one's pearls and sapphire highlights were a little nice. I don't know... Some of these do look nice and with some artistic flair. But as much as I love gems (and I do love sparkly things), the "I'm expensive because I covered every bit of surface area in diamonds while sticking them to expensive metals" just doesn't seem fascinating in the least.....
