Welcome to World of Rock Hounds!
Today, We are unboxing the National Geographic Rock and Mineral Starter Kit (15 pieces) and it was super fun to see what the kit came with.
I may have to do more unboxing videos if they keep making kits like this!
(not sponsored...though...it would be cool at this point!)

That seems like a pretty cool kit for any kid starting out, probably some adult kids too. Useful unboxing, thank you for sharing this.

I used to have that exact same knife! The desert rose is selenite A little bit of vinegar will let you know which one(s?) are calcite.

I plan on testing them a little later when I have some free time but I use to have a bunch of those knives. I probably put stone handles on maybe 50 of them and sold them for a while.

From my experience with the Nat Geo kits you don’t always get one of each stone in the book and you sometimes get stones that are not in the book this happened on both that I have bought recently. But I did assume that the rock and mineral starter kit would have one of each for teaching purposes, the others are just like a chance to contain this… and FYI to all use Michaels coupons to get them cheaper!

I kinda figured that would be the case because I'm sure these are mass produced and they don't necessarily keep track of what goes in there but it's still a cool starter kit. Wish we could have afforded stuff like this when I was a kid.

Nice video man, I think that large green one is fluorite, you could do a scratch test with your mail to determine if is scratches it’s calcite, if it doesn’t it’s fluorite. Also I gotta say that tigers eye is spectacular 🤩. Thanks for sharing

Apologies but some calcites are fluorescent as well, a better test would be muriatic acid, as muriatic acid does not effect fluorite but eats calcite

@@robertbradford3461 you are right if coarse, but they fluorese differently.., if I remember correctly!
@robertbradford3461
@robertbradford3461 3 жыл бұрын
@@kerinl.holmstrom1810 yes, but your ability to know the difference would definitely depend on your education level, for instance, calcite can flouresce in almost all colors and multiple colors, fluorite fluoresce blue Violet, creamy, white, and also depends on long wave or shortwave UV light, if you didn't know it you would probably not know, combination of tests , hardness one a three the other a four, acid test reaction, UV light test, cleavage, but with fluorite, and since fluorite forms in calcite muriatic acid is used to remove the calcite leaving the fluorite so seems that acid test would be better for determining the difference between the two suspected stones, but please please please DO NOT USE SULFURIC ACID IT DISSOLVES FLUORITE MAKING HYDROFLUORIC ACID, VERY VERY DANGEROUS

Is hematite magnetic? I bought a when bag of them at a souvenir shop in Florida one year on vacation and they all liked exactly like that and they were magnetic extremely strong magnets. Also why spend a lot of money on that box when you can find these exact same stones in different kinds of souvenir shops especially the aquariums where I had gotten mine and you could fill up a small med or big bag and had set prices a small bag was 5 med 10 and large 15 dollars. I got the large and stuffed full until I couldn't close it. They are common and way better value to go and buy them there, also they will give you a booklet to look them up like this national geographic booklet. Also bought a huge geode for 20.00 and they guy selling would crack them open for you it was so beautiful. The person that went next after me picked out which one he wanted and when he cracked it open it had water or something in it and don't know what was going on but crazy that it had water in it and they came from Australia. Mine didn't have water in it and glad it didn't I guess be kind of gross.

Hematite can be pulled towards a magnet, yes. But it is not necessarily magnetic unless it has been altered by man. There are a lot of rocks/minerals that can have a pull/push effect from a magnet - I've done a video on that some time ago. It was a neat experiment. The reason why I spent the money on this was so people can see what they are paying for if they happen across these sets in stores or online.

Yeah the specimens could have been better but they are good starts without having to spend too much money. I plan on getting one of the bigger kits to see how it looks. Possibly next month depending on how much I have after I pay bills.

@@WorldofRockhounds vinegar works as well, just not as fast, you have to change it very often, but allot less reactive than the muriatic, and safe to keep around
