Though does have a Stella like feel, is actually based on the Rex guitars of the 30s - 50s from Gretch, which were pretty popular blues guitars... which is where this guitar shines more, I find it is not the best strumming guitar out of the bunch, but for finger picking and slide style playing it shines much more, which is why it is loved by blues players still. There is also a model called the Gin Rickey, which is the same guitar but with a Deltolux pickup installed.

Waiting for one in the post, so I'm soaking these demos up in anticipation of it's arrivals. Man, yours tuned up right out of the box and sounded fantastic as soon as you started playing it. Most guitars tuned up out of the box sound a little out of tune to my ear, on all the unboxing videos, but this thing sounded pretty much dead on, up and down the next, as soon as you gave it a quick tuning. This video would have sold me a Jim Dandy, if I'd been on the fence and had not already purchased one.

It is hard to find a guitar that sounds bad with someone who plays as well as you do. Put that thing in my hands and I could bring out all the stray cats in a 10 square mile area with my screechy chords etc..

I purchased one of these earlier this yr on the recommendation of another you tuber ( not Tom ) to learn to play finger style blues guitar. I have nothing good to say about guitar period. I cant literally give this guitar away. Lesson learned
@TomStrahle4 жыл бұрын
I bought it specifically for a lo-fi, read cheap, quality of the instrument. It does that well. It's already inspired several pretty cool pop hooks. As for being a Robert Johnson type instrument probably not. But I do find it more vibey in D standard.

@@TomStrahle Sure Tom, I understand from your position as a pro with a bevy of quality acoustics, but if your a beginner on a budget and only own a few acoustics , you can do a heck of alot better ,JMHO, tossing in 25$ more bucks and get an Orangewood ( includes a nice gig bag ) . Thanks for the hard work on your channel ; its great

The Jimmy Dandy is a great guitar however the machineheads let it down going out of tune regularly. however I changed the machineheads to wilkinsons on the bar to give it a more authentic look , I have no problem with it now. But it would be nice if Gretsch put a quality set of machines on as standard .

Hi Tom, now you need another period movie to play the guitar in, like the Emma Stone/Ryan Gosling movie you were in!

Try Recording King. I got one for $160 on eBay. How is the set up/action? Fret ends? Thanks Tom
@carlbowden47124 жыл бұрын
I've owned the Dandy and a recording king series 7 . Basic versions of the same parlor size, the RK I had to file fret ends and couple of the frets were high not playable right out of the box. The Dandy had nothing wrong with it and sounds better. The only reason I bought the RK was because I got it for $110 on a flash sale from guitar center. Honestly I'll probably never buy a RK again because the quality was so bad.
@TomStrahle4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, go info. The only time I've played RK instruments was at NAMM the worst place to try acoustic instruments.
@denisejacobs88864 жыл бұрын
@@carlbowden4712 yea I had to file the frets on the Recording King too. It has a bone nut on it but the slots are filed too deep too. For the money I didn’t care real bad. More a lesson in luthier tech than anything else.

It is a fun guitar but a toy it isn't it has very nice gnarly blues sound in open tunings and with a slide. I have yet to find anyone who hasn't loved this guitar that's had one

I'm digging it as a pop writing tool. It has a lo-fi quality I could never get from any of my Gibsons, Martins or Taylors. That was my goal.
