Nice kit. Remembering that survival is the reason for its being, it serves its purpose well. Nice, though kinda negative, review. Those tiny hooks can catch trout, bluegill, and some younger fish - great when you're hungry. Snares will sometimes catch some not so easy to eat animals but like I said, great when you're hungry.

A video I watched talked about catching birds with hooks. Interesting idea but I havent tried it. Any options in a pinch though.

Nice video. Like you mentioned, I'd add some stuff to it. It would make it a really handy keep in your truck or car kinda thing.

Well, it beats not having anything. It's a good starting point to add to and build up.

Really come across a good premade one yet I’m sure I’ll find some. I’d much rather make my own anyway but it would be easier to have good premade available.

I would add a better knife. I would add also a small magnifying glass, small first aid supplies, tweezers, a lighter, finger nail clippers, water purification tablets and small candle.

Little hooks catch little fish and big fish. Big hooks only catch big fish.

When I bought that kit it was $32. I’m gonna assume you could get it somewhere else cheaper.

Call me names, but in my opinion a commercial survival kit is a starting point--and an educational tool. Due to economics, the cutting tools in most survival kits are cheap, sometimes to the point of being unusable. A Gem single-edged razor blade isn't a great cutter but some of the dollar store pocketknives are not worth a buck, not effective at cutting. What's stopping you from using your everyday knife? I'd toss in a flat LED flashlight--when I bought them in bult a year ago, they were as inexpensive as fifty cents with delivery fee. The big deal is getting a case to keep your kit components together--and you may want to dump the kit box out and distribute the items in your pockets, depending on circumstances. Mini-kits are very limited. What a mini-kit does is BE THERE when the regular wilderness equipment and supplies are elsewhere. Using matches for illumination is not always the best option. A butane lighter is cheap and works most of the time--secondary fire starters are a good idea. Of course you would modify things--the Swiss Army Knife you used to fix the carabiner and keyring probably cost more than the Red Rock survival kit but is far more capable than the knife provided in the kit. I needed to have small bugout kits with me when I worked overseas and in some rural/wilderness areas in the USA. I'd begin by looking around in my junk drawer for kit components and figure out something for a storage case--and if the storage case wasn't suitable, I'd have a second case for carrying the kit. My kit had to be economical (call it "cheap") because I had to regard it as disposable. My coworkers liked my kits when I had to discard them. The kit had to be compact enough to be with me at all times while providing the basics for the circumstances. A 50-pound footlocker may be a complete kit, but I won't have it with me most of the time. I saw no first aid supplies in the Red Rock kit, no water treatment capabilities. Then there's the need for shelter/clothing items you noticed--a mylar blanket or a plastic pocket poncho is very nice to have. Your primary kit contents are your knowledge, skills, and physical condition. Thank you for your video review--you added to my knowledge base.

I'm a survivalist and if you have money to waste buy what you want but there's some very good quality survival kits and then there's junk but all items are technical useful I collect survival kits but I also have gear I bought that's very good and I would bet my life on them but it takes years to get alot of gear built up unless your rich or very wealthy or just have a great job but I'm a Bushcraft survivalist and I livevin the White Mountains of NH its winter here for 6 months and usually 2 feet of snow or more and for w months its very cold its about - 20 to -25 F degrees and I go out and stay for 3 days just to build my skills up but I hike literally everyday I live right on the Appalachian Trail and there's several others to but everybody should be prepared

I bet you have some great hiking stories. My folks are from northern Vermont. Great hiking areas up that way.

This kit is barely worth $30. Save your money until you can afford some real gear.
