Excellent unboxing, thank you. A couple of comments, just to expand on some of your comments: 1) L2 Design Group and Art Lupinacci (me) Licensed the game to Compass Games. They did a wonderful job on the print quality, in my opinion. 2) It is, in fact, the 3rd edition of the game, and the game evolved from 1/2", 9/16" and finally, 5/8". At the time, we offered a very limited run 1" plastic counter version on vinyl map! Not many copies were printed. The Mega game is a collector item. 3) The rule book is in 12 point type. Rob Beyma wanted it to be easy to read so the large type makes it look bigger than it is. Hope this helps!

I pulled out a big box from when I was single and low and behold I pulled out two copies of AH Russian Campaign. I Looked at the old, weathered 50 year old maps and said... "I can't believe I spent 10000 hours staring at this little map!

This could be my favourite eastfront game.

I watch to get a look at components. One thing I would like to see is a few counters or components laying on the actual map for a bit or in a small cut away shot. It would show how the colors and aesthetics of the game comes together as well as spatial relations of the pieces and map (Hex to counter size etc.).

In addition to seeing the components in the game, I appreciate a bit of history/background of the game, designer, battles covered, why this version may be re-released, how this compares to other games covering the same era and how this game differs from other games covering the same battles. I think your insights are very helpful!

I can tell a lot about how I will enjoy a game just by looking at a good review of the components.

For paper maps i bought ultra thin plexiglass from Lowes that works beautifully. You can even pick up the plexiglass with the counters on it and store the game so your wife doesn't get mad. Also I own FitE.

I was given the L2 version of this game by a friend who is a huge fan of it, indeed he is helping Compass proofread the Finnish expansion. In addition to the expansion there is yet another booklet, sold separately, with more details & strategy suggestions. It's probably a bit too much for me, given I have both No Retreat: The Russian Front & the new Absolute War (which is supposedly simpler than NR:TRF but may actually be far more complicated biven the BGG traffic). I have read some of the Russia Besieged rulebook, the rules do not seem that complicated but there are a lot of them. Not sure why but some of the printing in the L2 version I have is huge.

This is exactly what I want in an unboxing. The game looks really cool and I want to buy it, but I'm trying not to buy things that I will likely never play. Let's see how successful I am.

I find it hard to believe that you have never played Russian Campaign! I spent more time over that map than any other game...

Indeed, this sparked tonight's Counter Clipping topic!

I am looking for one (1) strategic-sized Russian Front game. Can't be bigger than 2 maps. Thought about the Compass remake of the original Russian Campaign, or this. Not waiting for GMT.

Consider The Dark Valley.

Did you say you never have played the Russian campaign? Wow. I should have bought this but I did p500 for GMT's Russian campaign. I did not order the Compass version which maybe out this year because it is an older L2 design, I believe. Too many games n never enough time.

Lol, I had it for three years and still haven't done the "unboxing" :)

I used to be a mounted map person, had to have mounted maps. Not anymore. I've had mounted maps that were on material that wound up warping, and in those cases the game becomes nearly unsalvageable as plexi won't cure all those cases. Never had a paper map fall apart to the point it was not serviceable, nor one that wouldn't lay flat under plexi. Now days, map art far outweighs mounted or unmounted issues. I've still got the AH Russian Campaign, ordered the Compass 74' Russian Campaign. Have No Retreat Russia and Carl's new Absolute War. I was always curious on this title, but I'm full on Russian campaign titles currently.
