It's a very beautiful machine, Sam, I agree with your scores. Hornby are running at a heavy loss right now so they need this one to work. I'm just glad there are no bears painted all over her....lol. Personally I wouldn't pay the RRP for this but around the £150 mark seems quite reasonable. When it comes to buying the next big steamer for the loft layout this one's got my name all over it :) Great review mate. All the best...Tom

When I was little I always thought Mallard reminded me of Gordon because of how big and proud it looked, not forgetting the speed and the colour also. Saying that that shot at the end of the video of the two Class A4s which seemed to race each other, having said that I always liked that angle when the locos just approach the camera, just like when a real loco appears down the track and approaching at speed. Once again great review Sam. With regards Michael

it would be good in the future if Hornby did mallard for the 100th anniversary again but instead of the locomotive on its own it would be good to have the dynamometer car and the set of LNER coronation coaches so we can re-create the moment with the exact same train Mallard used on the 3rd of july 1938..

Once again Sam, such a beautiful model! Mallard is my favorite preserved A4! I made another discovery that a seventh A4 was planned to be preserved! That example was no. 60024 Kingfisher! My dad travelled on sleepers like that on the LNER(in teak livery he told me) when he travelled from London to Aberdeen when he was a kid, he was evacuated to Ballater, Scotland, in WW2 and lived with family there, and he did indeed score a few A4s for haulage on his travels! The A4 is one of the finest steam locos built I think. And you have a nice selection there, always good to see the different liveries on show!

Hi sam when i grow up i want to have a amazing layout just like yours as i love trains! Also whats your faviroute train (mine has always been the a4 mallard and i like it in the BR green livery)
@wobblinwheel5 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the folks at Hornby expect us to believe that Mallard was ever painted in FLAT PAINT? The one in the museum is certainly very SHINY! When Hornby realizes that these locomotives that are preserved in museums, or are currently running excursions, should NOT BE PAINTED IN DULL, FLAT PAINT! The flat, or "mat" finish gives the appearance of a "faded" or "weathered" condition! Obviously, this is NOT the case with Mallard! The idea that Hornby has that shiny(er) locos don't look "real" is absolute horse hockey! Because of the "dull" finish, many of the colors are actually incorrect, ie, FADED...BR BLUE, GARTER BLUE, BR GREEN, etc. are totally "off " when painted flat! Very easy to apply clear "Dullcote" to make them "weathered", but nearly IMPOSSIBLE to make them shiny!
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
I agree - I'm not sure why we don't see more gloss liveries - we know Hornby can do them! I have noticed that they're very easily damaged, and not easily cleaned - so maybe it's done for durability's sake? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@iceeblueburst035 жыл бұрын
I remember driving this train as well in Train Sim while the Mallard 4468 is pulling blue passenger coaches and I think that's a perfect match for this engine. Hi Sam. What a dream of a model of an iconic British loco. For my money, the garter blue livery of Mallard knocks the BR blue of Golden Eagle into a cocked hat. The cab detail on Mallard is an absolute delight to behold. Hornby does it again!

Lovely model and great review. Quick question - why do 99% of models have a matt finish when the real thing was painted with a gloss/shiny finish? I know Hornby did a gloss finish Coronation class streamliner but the majority of models are matt.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - that's a very good question, I'm not too sure! I have noticed that with the Hornby gloss locos (such as the ones in the Gresley collection), the finish is very easily marked - so maybe the matte is just a bit more hard wearing? It photographs better too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@benzinapaul74166 жыл бұрын
Just seems odd given everyones obsession with accuracy these days that nobody ever complains about the matt finish. The reflections from a gloss finish would show off the shapes of the locos better and in my opinion makes them less toy like and plasticky.

Good review, Sam. Is this a completely new model, or is it more or less the same Hornby model first issued about ten years ago, when it was at the top of their range? I have one of those and while it looks impressive, it could only pull five bogie coaches on level track and four coaches on a slight incline on a layout at a local model railway club. Any more than that and the wheels just spin (lack of weight). I recently bought a second hand Bachmann Mallard and while it can't compete with the Hornby on looks, it has the weight to pull a reasonable load - to me, an essential quality.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
HI Rob - yes this is just a new release of an existing model - as far as I know anyway! Ahh that's interesting - I'll have to try that! I know my railroad one can handle an immense number of coaches - but I've never tried it with this! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam, good news i have narrowed it down to two locos. 1. Hornby R3676 Class A4 LNER, A4 Class, 4-6-2, 4468 'Mallard'. 2.BR 4-6-2 'Sir Archibald Sinclair', Battle of Britain Class (Air Smoothed), Early BR. so I think the choice will be made on the 2 hour drive from Sacramento to San Francisco and the 11 hour fight from San Francisco to London. from your little friend (by age) Michael Foerster

Hi Sam, happy New Year. Just wanted to ask you about servicing regarding this loco. This time last year, I got a Mallard Pullman Set. And I’ve used it often for a few minutes at a time, and a year later it’s still running fine. Is it worth servicing or do you think that if it’s still doing well not to worry about it? I’d trust you’d do a fantastic job servicing it but is there any point if it’s still doing great? at least until it’s slower etc? Also I’ve seen you service others and mention the motors start to go after a while. How long has your Mallard lasted and if/when my Mallard’s motor and other parts starts to age/slow would you be able to replace and install new parts when that happens? Sorry for the long post, it’s just my favourite loco so I want to ensure I’m doing the best I can. Thanks in advance.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, if it's running fine, there's no real need to do much too it! I would suggest cleaning the wheels, and lightly oiling the mechanism (as per the instructions) - but I wouldn't suggest dismantling this if it's still running fine! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I can understand why models are released in red, white and blue livery, but for those of who remember the sixties the only colours are BR black or green liveries. haha absolutely - when they get it right, they really get it right! Oh yeah - Hornby set much higher standards then DJM!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

hi sam another good video of a loco with brute power.i remember in the 1980s we had the sir nigel gresly at southall shed where it was service while on duty at Marylebone.it was in blue and looked a lovely sight.it would come to southall overnight from marylebone

And did you know hornby made an A4 Bittern and it had 2 tenders which looked good I have to say. Maybe you can think about getting bittern depending on the price.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
yeah I did! They do look fantastic! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

If value were taken out of the equation (as it doesn’t detract from the overall quality of the model), what would you rate it? I personally would give it a 10 out of 10.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
It'd probably be close to to - maybe 8? My favourites have metal bodies/boilers! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@lmn280219924 жыл бұрын
Quality 4/5 in my opinion. The 'flangeless' pony truck did not make contact with the track. Had a similar problem with my Flying Scotsman USA and had to loosen the screw holding the axle in to allow it to drop sufficiently to touch the track! IMO Hornby are still the best manufacturer however I think their Chinese factory QC still leaves a lot to be desired
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right - the pony trucks are a big complaint from many on these! Agreed, their QC could do with some improving! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Another enjoyable review. Just received today, from Kernow, at £150, the 80th Anniversary version R3612. Will be for display only, albeit I ordered a sound chip for it. Will need to order another A4, so I can use the chip. Any suggestions?
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much mate - ahh that sounds fantastic - what a wonderful display it'll make! I'd only really recommend the Hornby A4s; the Bachmann ones are based on a very old Trix model (I think) and the Dapol ones often seem to have running issues! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@MrBnsftrain6 жыл бұрын
The Hornby A4s are quite amazing in person! Especially since I saw someone run Gadwall with TTS sound at a public layout back in 2015! The odd one out is at 14:55, but It's still an LNER pacific!
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Oh very cool - yes the TTS Gadwall is awesome, always loved that one! And well spotted - yes that's absolutely right! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

When I got my Hornby mallard I was a stupid 6 year old or something like that and surprisingly it kept in good condition, but I didn't know how to attach the tender so I put it on the wrong side. One day I took her for a rin and she detached from her tender at full speed, also my track is really small, so she ended up ramming into the back of the tender and the front buffers broke off. Luckily we stuck them back on with super glue ans she was ok and has been ever since

I wish mallard would be over hauled so I could see it steam for the first time in over 30 years (nice review)

Hi sam love your channel just one question though what is the difference between this version of the Mallard and the train set version are they different ?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Greg - the train set Mallards are the Railroad versions - a much more basic version of the model - the main range Railways version is much more detailed, with higher spec! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hello Sam, it's been a while. That is an outstanding review of the brand new Hornby Mallard, she looks very impressive especially the Garter Blue livery and the running performance is fantastic. I own 2 Hornby Mallards, the 70th Anniversary edition from almost 10 years ago, I don't run her, so she's on display on my shelf and the Hornby Railroad Mallard and I use her, she's not very well detailed as your Hornby R3676 version, but she's still great, I wouldn't mind getting the Hornby R3676 Mallard someday, I really love the box too. I could see 5 A4 Pacifics in the sidings and the odd one out is the LNER A1/A3 Pacific. Onces again, an outstanding review. I give your review of the brand new Hornby R3676 Mallard, A 10/10 & 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Kind regards Jordan Shingler. Oh and you should get the Rapido Trains Dynamometer Car, the 1938 version from Rails of Sheffield, I know it's very expensive, until you save enough money to buy it. Here is the link. railsofsheffield.com/products/33461/rapido-trains-inc-dynamometer-v1-oo-gauge-lner-dynamometer-car-version-1-lner-teak-livery-as-no-23591-as-it-was-at-3-july-1938-for-the-mallard-world-speed-record-breaking-run

Hey Jordan - it certainly has! Really glad you liked the review - yes she looks superb in the Garter blue! Oh nice - I bet those are superb together - even the Railroad version is a lovely peice of kit! Well spotted with those - glad you liked them!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

7:13 around the 1940s would the crest be on or was that added later on? I want to know because I love the detail of this mallard and if I get it I want to know if I should remove the crest or keep it on

I absolutely love the Mallard. I have the Dapol A4 version. Now is it just me or my eyes playing tricks on me ? The real thing has a high gloss shine, bright shiny red wheels, a lighter brighter blue and chrome hand rails buffers and linkages. This has dull dark maroon wheels, dull Matt dark blue paint work, no chrome rails or linkages. It's all a bit flat. The detail is there but it doesn't shine... even the brass fittings on the external pipe is just blue. Dapol have come close but for me know one has yet to produce an accurate representation of it.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Me too James - how is the dapol version? I'd agree with you - I don't know why Hornby don't produce more gloss liveries - they did do a few, but not many. I wonder if it's easily damaged? I agree though, more metal detail would be nice, given the prices! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Oh hello, bullman's back, havent seen him for a bit! Nice review on a nice looking model, Sam. However, Im disappointed with Hornby's A4s because they all have a fixed rear bogey and you can see it doesnt touch the track in places. How they can ask for £180+ for this I do not know. How hard is it for Hornby to produce these with an articulated rear bogey after all? The garter blue is a nice colour but I prefer the Silver Fox livery although Mallard never run in that scheme as far as I know.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
haha yeah - he popped his head in to see the new Mallard! Yes the rear bogey is a bit of a pain - probably the only criticism that you hear quite a lot! The flanged axle that comes in the package does look much better (the flanges cover the gap), but I'm not too sure whether they'll take 3rd radius or not! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I know this is an old video but I have one of these models on a standard hornby kit track and it not after long bent off the side doors as the corners were too tight which is quite annoying, especially as this is a standard track they sell and not the bend of doom on your track.
