Unboxing the Charles Schwab Amex Platinum

FYI - I just received my Schwab Amex Platinum. It’s didn’t come in the fancy box and didn’t have marketing materials included. It came in a UPS envelope. Inside was a white Amex envelope with the typical sheets that no one reads, and one sheet to which the card was attached. That’s it! I guess they’re saving on packaging while charging $145 more. 😊

I got my gold in June and it also came in with a plain ups envelope with out the letters “you are now officially golden”. I was quite pissed off how they want to save money over a single printed line. Same story for platinum, couple years ago they have the wood block with the card. When they canceled it I reconsidered if I still want that card but I guess I don’t really care about that piece of wood that much. Now it’s just getting even worse to a whole new level. I guess I will still get the card because of the actual benefits. But the first several days I know I will feel like crap instead of being happy and proud

Yes, you’re paying double the annual fee (unless you are active duty military) so yeah its double the benefits

I have one more question, because is double you have to use both card to make it double? or only using 1 card It will be double? Example if I want to use my 400$ credit for hotel’s can i use 1 card and if the total amount is 600$ and I only use the vanilla card they will still give me the 400$ hotel credit that I have available?

Looks like you got the redesigned version of the Schwab Platinum Card that just went into circulation not too long ago! The version of the card I got last year has "American Express" in a wider font and the word "Platinum" right below it. Guess I will have to hold on to my old one since it is a legacy design now! Odd for an Amex platinum card to not say “platinum” beneath American Express on the front of the card. Both my vanilla platinum and Schwab platinum say platinum on the face of the card, whereas yours looks more like a gold card saying only American Express

Amex Centurion card does not say centurion. The card itself differentiate what card it is.

It's the new design... The green, the gold and now the platinum look exactly the same on the front. I always thought it was strange how the platinum was only Amex card to actually have the name on the front... As our old cards expire they will be replaced with the updated look. I actually like the old look better...

AMEX is good ASF at getting your cards to you quickly. My Gold came in 2 days. Meanwhile it took 2 weeks for my CSP to come in. Thanks Chase.

And I've been pre-approved for the Gold and Platinum card. Wish Chase makes it easier for their existing customers to get new cards.

Recently got the AMEX Platinum (vanilla) and it came with similar packaging and marketing materials. Some differences. Uber rides, not Uber credits that could be used on Eats. Doesn't matter since where I live there's no Uber anything. Hoping that this year will be better for travel so I can get into a Centurion or Delta Sky Club lounge. Also, my card had minor scratches and decided it wasn't a big deal. Which is weird since I hate scratches on new stuff.

My My.... there appears to be TWO scratches. One on the left as well. It must have made contact with processing machinery when it was made or mishandled when they boxed it. I would report damage out of box and request another.

Is it work spending the $550 to get the bonus and the 10x points? Would be very helpful to hear someones opinion. Thank you!

Can college students even be approved for this card, unless you come from a wealthy family? What are your data points? Do you have any credit history? FICO score? What other cards do you have? Credit limits on those cards? Probably best to wait until you graduate from college and have a steady paying job before you get the Platinum card. No offense, but if AMEX is giving Platinum cards to college students...then it’s not as “prestigious” as I thought it was. Assuming that you’re not wealthy, you should be applying for student cards or “entry level” cards, not premium cards. Build up your credit history.

Hey Christopher, These types of cards require a bit of dedication and a bit of expending to make it worth your time (and money). First, you will have to pay the annual fee out of pocket right away. Then you will have to keep track of all your bonuses or refunds trough out the year to offset that fee. The more you are able to get, the less you have to expend to come even at the end of the year. Secondly, this is a luxury travel card. I know they have some offers right now for groceries and such, but its main purpose is getting points on airlines and hotels. If you are not making a lot of travel, or can't find a way to justify the expenses on the offer to make it worth, I would skip this card for now. Also remember that after the current offer expires, if you decide to keep the card, you will have to keep paying the annual fee. If this is your only amex card that earns point, you will lose access to those points that are still in the account when you close it. The way I see it, there's two main type of users for this card. People that will be into the hobby and will try to maximize all the bonuses and benefits to squeeze the maximum amount of profit from this card. And people that like the status and services that this card provides, like the lounges, and couldn't care less about the points or the annual fee. Finally, if the card fits your expenses and your life style would benefit from it, get it. If you will have to accommodate a bunch of the stuff you do on the daily, or you have to go out of your way in order for the card to make sense, don't. The card has to work for you, not the other way around. Hope this helps.

No. Unless you're active military and can get the fee waived, this card isn't for college students. Not trying to come across as douchey or anything, just pointing out that this is more travel oriented than anything else. If you're not doing a lot of traveling, you're not going to get anything out of this. Honestly the gold card is a waaaaaaaaay better fit for the college student, with the 240 in dining and uber credits covering most of the 250 fee.
