I found 30 second hand holbeins in my local art shop recently and will now buy more open stock. Sadly the gentleman who originally brought them had passed away. His family returned them but because they'd been sharpen, they couldn't be resold at full price. I hope he's looking down on me, knowing how happy he's made me.

Excellent review! I appreciate the thoroughness of your descriptions of the pencils. Best one I’ve seen yet on KZbin. I’m looking forward to your follow-up videos where you put the pencils through their coloring paces. (There are a few rather mean comments that are in the list here. I thoroughly disagree with any opinion that you and Steve aren’t an up front and honest channel. That’s why you don’t take sponsorships, right? Thanks for being a dedicated, wholesome, well-spoken, cheerfully friendly channel, and your knowledge is very appreciated by your many loyal viewers.)

I've had my set for several years and I still like them the most of all the sets I own. They are much less on Amazon now but who knows how long that will last. Also, Blick has the Holbein Meltz colorless blender which works really well.

Your right they’ve been going on sale on Amazon lately, I got a second set of the pastels for only 180$ Canadian including shipping which is only 130$ US!!! Mine did not come with the warnings tho, tbt one reason I got the second set is because I wanted to see if the US set would be different from the set I got from Japan but I think I ended up with a second set from Japan. I think I may remove the whites & the cream now, that definitely freaks me out just a bit too much 😅🙈🙈

Seems a few negative comments for this video - everyone is entities to there opinion but may be if your that agreived just go watch something else. I love learning about the different grade pencils available and I have to say while these in this video are more expensive end of pencils , you do get what you pay for! In my experience I have wasted so much money on cheeped brands as they just do not hold up in the same way and I rather have a smaller set of decent quality than a large set of cheaper pencils ( the old adage is true by cheep by twice !!!). As the premium pencil brands offer open stock it enables me the ability to buy colours slowly but surely as I too am on a budget. The thing that helped me most was getting over the ‘whole set syndrome’ I just buy colours I will use. I usually buy 3 at a time so I have a blend group -(thanks Jenifer as this is the most important advice I think any of us who enjoy colouring can learn ) and I have a mix of the more expensive pencils making up my collection as have wanted to try different pencils and on the whole most play well together ( it’s being aware of if they are oil or wax based I think but to be fair as I buy 3 colour blend set at a time it’s not an issue for me ) And the big plus with higher end brands is with open stock it is easy to replace colours as needed and this is not the case with cheeped brands . I appreciate these videos as helps me get the best quality for my budget and inspires me to save to try new pencils and add to my collection ....... and when I say save I may take months to save enough for a 3 blend set but it’s so worth it 😊😊😊 . Each to their own but pleas don’t dis things just because you can’t afford it as not fair and especially not when Jenifer has many videos on other lower cost products too 🥰

Awesome 😊. Thank you Jennifer. I haven't had the chance to mention (don't THINK I have, that is 😬 lol), but purple is my lifelong favorite color and doing art really DOES help distract from physical pain (I was training for the '88 Olympics in gymnastics, years with Bela Karolyi until I was injured, then got MS 12yrs ago, a very painful and incurable brain disease). I have known pain my whole life, sigh. But I just wanted to thank you and Steve again. Your channel is really fantastic 😊.

@@tanyaknapp5985 Why, thank you 😊. We sound VERY similar. I also couldn't keep my feet on the ground as a young child either! 😄 Except I was fortunate that while being born in Philadelphia, I started school in Malta (we had family there and moved for an extended stay, while I turned 5) and when coming back to the states at almost 6yo and enrolling in school here, I was massively tested and the fact that my birthday is Dec 11th-half way thru the school year, they didn't know which grade to even put me in (public school, nuff said 😐). I tested at a Mensa level but thankfully, my mother knew that my entire heart was in gymnastics (yes, even at 4yo, I was also one that HAD to flip around)! It was in my blood to be airborn 😜👍. But my mother had told me this story when I was much older, that I was laying on the couch by myself smiling one day, she thought I was watching TV. When she came in the room and saw that the TV was off, she asked me why I was smiling and I told her, " Mom? The way I'm laying on this couch right now, I'm not in °ANY° pain!" 😳 I was 11yrs old. She started crying, thinking that she caused it by allowing me to go into the sport, till I told her no, there was no WAY she could've kept me from my dream and I wouldn't trade ANY of the pain off, for not doing what I °loved° to do 😔. 51yrs later, I'm still paying the price, but I STILL wouldn't trade a second of it in my memory, for what it was. I got to work with my dream coach, even though I broke one of the cardinal rules, never give gymnasts "time off" 😐, we tend to do stupid things 😬. I frinally got a chance to go back home for a week to visit family, went to my old gym and tried to show my old coach how I was learning a full twisting double front and broke the second cardinal rule, NEVER stop flipping mid-air. Going into the second flip, I saw the old equipment and my mind just froze mid way through and I fell from 14' in the air, onto the back of my neck. Ya. I don't call myself "The World's Smartest Dumbass" for no reason. Having to make that phone call to say that I'm not coming back-after getting a mouthful of Romanian cursy words, he actually then hired me to come work for him as a coach "You trained by the best, now come coach the best". Getting paychecks from the very man I dreamed to work with my whole life was surreal, but I had to make peace that my dream ended with one stupid decision that I made and I just had to move on with life. My life, of pain. 💜

Their pencils had cadmium pigments in them, that was the issue, which I believe meant they didn't comply with some of the US requirements for health and safety risks. The warning on the box is because some of the pigments have the same potential issues which I believe has to be warned about in the US (we don't have the same warning on boxes here in the UK if I remember rightly, I got my box direct from Amazon Japan and imported it to the UK at a much reduced price so I'm not sure if my box is for sale abroad or an original Japanese one). They're only a risk if you (generic) plan on eating multiple amounts of pencil, the small elements included in the pigment formula is minisqule. They are incredible pencils, in my top five along with my Polychromos, Caran D'Ache Luminance and Derwent Lightfast.

Oh I am so happy for you! I have had these a while and love them, they are my favorite pencil and as I get more advanced in my skills I just love them more and more. I'm glad they finally did the industry standard lightfast testing just so people won't criticize them any more for not doing it. Their lightfastness is well known in Japan. I can't wait for you to make the color wheels and tri tone charts. I encourage you to get their specific blending solution Meltz, I think it's better than Gamsol because it makes them watercolor, almost Inktense pencil like. Experiment on different paper. I enjoy them in my books with smoother paper (Like Rita Berman's books) that need less layers and quicker color pay off, but they work on all paper I use. They remind me of oil pastels. So fun!

This is my dream set. I wanted them many years before they became widely available. I remember I saw a picture of them and I searched for a long time until I found them on a site in Japan. It was crazy. It was maybe 7-8 years ago. Maybe one day I can get them. I hope. But if it’s difficult for you guys on the US, imagine here in Brazil where our currency is losing its value really fast in this economy. Oh well… I can wait. I do have the 12 pastel pack that I got maybe some 5 years ago and they are amazing. Love them! So I know they are worth the price. In my opinion, of course.

It’s cause they were made with an animal fat that when mixed with the other ingredients can be linked to cancer. I think the newest ( most expensive ) formula doesn’t use that. Holbiens used to use animal fats in general as the “oil” in their pencils. At least that is what the research someone else I watch found.

I've always wanted to get the full pastel set because it's really the only brand of colored pencil, aside from the irojitin by Tombow, that has a dedicated line of gorgeous pastel shades. I have a handful of some of the holbien pastel colored pencils and I do hope to someday get the full 50 set :D

I bought that set! But I honestly didn't like them. I prefer my Caran d ache luminance pencils. I have other brands too, but if I'm gonna pay that much money I want to be happy with the ending results. Another thing that I was so disappointed was the fact that the point kept on breaking. As I kept sharpening the pencils the point kept on breaking more and more. As I saw the pencil getting smaller by the seconds as I was sharpening all I could think was that my hard working money was being wasted in the blade of the sharpener!!!! So if I have to give an honest opinion it will be........ DON'T BUY THE SET!!! Just try them by buying one or two individually, if you like them, then save your money and buy the whole set. 🌺🌻🌸🌼
