Stumbled across this. Invaluable, never knew Hornby made this in the 80s. Though it’s a shame they moved away from the deep gloss Brunswick green injection moulded green colour that Albert Hall had to the Matt finish green on this and other locos of the era. I usually prefer lined green but in this case I really think the black has aged better. Your archive of old stuff is great. Please bring back “retro reviews” like the new stuff but budget and preference means I buy more used items.

I haven’t looked at any of these old models in a long time! Might actually buy one of these for my layout, the paint and moulding are good enough that the loco looks super convincing from a distance!!

Another good one Sam . Love the 2MT . Never got a Hornby one but finally got a Bachmann one about 10 years ago. Pretty quaint little locos. I think there is a preserved one on SVR. Love to see more of the rolling stock. Looks like you've been investing in some nice Lima rakes. And similarly while I have lots of new locos. I love your reviews of the oldies. Keep them coming!
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Benton Thanks a lot Russell, I saw one of the Bachmann ones in our model shop, I was really close to buying it too! They looked far better than this one anyway! I've got a video showing various new rolling stock coming on Wednesday if you're interested. I've got a mixture of oldies and modern reviews coming too! :D Cheers, Sam :)

Hands down one of my favorite Loco classes because of its iconic look. Got one online with a black body and a green tender so i decided to paint mine RED and then installed an old Hornby sandpaper chuff-chuff noise maker into the tender.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Steve Rossi Thanks a lot for the comment, sounds like a great project - and a great idea to add the chuffing mech to the tender! Cheers, Sam :)

I’ve just been given one of these in a big box of old models from the 70s. Looking forward to getting it going again hopefully. There is something charming and characterful about these old models despite the lack of detail and finesse compared to contemporary locos.

Another great review. I had one these in BR black in the late 70s and in the early 80s I drilled holes in it to fit the Zero One chip !!!!!!! I now have a BR Black boxed late 70s example. No holes / No Zero One. Oscar

+Oscar Paisley haha thanks mate! I do remember seeing some zero one chips - pretty beefy things! You did well to fit one in at all haha! Cheers mate, Sam :)

Nice review Sam, both locos look good together. With their small drivers, they do look "busy" when running. : ) The Lima coach set is very nice, realistic livery too. : ) Not forgetting the short cab rides. : ) Cheers, Cliff.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+janiceandcliff Thanks very much Cliff, I think I like these for the same reason as you do! Glad you like the Lima coaches, I'm always surprised at how good Lima's coaches were compared with their locos. I do enjoy putting in the odd cab ride, hopefully it makes things a little more entertaining! Cheers, Sam :)

Another great video, even 4 years on 🙂, just got me one of these from the NZ local version of eBay but was unboxed and the seller had no info to impart so it was great to find your video so I knew what I had! My loco has a plastic worm and drive cog so does that make it later than the one you show? No maker marks of any kind that I can find either. I have already had to add weight to the tender due to derail issues but otherwise think it's great. Cheers David
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! Really glad this was some use to you - yes I think all of these may have had the plastic worm, as it was quite a bit later than most tri-ang stuff! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I've got the black one, but I always wanted the green one. It was an interesting model for Hornby to make at the time. Now I'm thinking of modifying mine so that the tender couples more closely to the loco. :)

great vid Sam............when did Hornby start their manufacture in China? I think this a "Built in Britain" loco if I am not mistaken; if it was 1978. I must confess I am an earlier model collector (50s-60s), however I do have a few of the later ones. Good stuff.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Hepke Thanks very much mate! I don't believe Hornby moved to China until the mid 1990s, so everything before that was obviously built in Britain! I'm the same really too - I prefer these older engines myself! Thanks for the comment, Cheers, Sam :)

My model of 46521 is more the proper shade of green, with the exact same lining. She runs perfectly well; a bit noisy but not quite as noisy as the model you have. My model is somewhat quieter when running either forwards or backwards. Once upon an SVR running day, 46443 and 46521 were coupled together running tender-first. Dad and I were watching them puff away from Highley Station, with seven coaches in tow. I've had a ride behind both in the past, and seen for myself that, even if only one of them is running on her own, she can manage to haul seven coaches unaided. Eardington Bank, steep as it is, is no match for an Ivatt 2MT Tender Engine and seven coaches. So what would your model 46521 say to the challenge of hauling seven coaches up Gordon's Hill? I'd like to see her attempt to pull it off.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Ahh you have a good one then? Yes they do run great, even if they’re not quiet! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
