I just got this as part of the Flying Scotsman train set. Crazy that the RRP fr the engine alone is nearly as much as the whole set. With that said, I'm really pleased with it. Sure, the detail is lacking in certain spots as is to be expected for an entry level model, but it runs really nicely, even with the cheapo starter set controller and it still looks really nice overall.

This is a great review Sam, I would just like to say a big thank you and point out something which I feel a lot of your viewers take for granted. With your videos I am immensely grateful for your style of review in which you focus you time on actually making the review rather than padding the run time with unnecessary features. Definitely a great review, since I have the same loco, I am able to answer some of your questions in regards to the Hornby Railroad A1 Flying Scotsman. Tender pickups are not really fitted on the DCC ready version so basically, the tender is just a simple rolling stock. the DCC ready version does have a 3 pole motor, so therefore, the DCC fitted TTS sound version has a 5 pole motor, personally I'm not too fussed about the motor as I'm happy with how the 3 pole motor does it's job. The DCC ready version would normally be coded as product R3086 and R1167 in the train set version. I personally like the metal unsprung buffers which is a great improvement to the fragile molded plastic buffers. The weight of the loco is definitely impressive enough for it to pull a maximum 12 coaches up a gradient according to some reviews which is also a great improvement over previous versions that struggled with 5 coaches on a gradient which I have also seen physically as well, mainly the tender driven versions being the common ones, so basically I'm grateful the loco is loco driven. I like how the loco has NEM pockets which allow you to easily change your NEM tension lock couplers to any NEM coupler whether it be european or american. Personally for me, I fitted NEM no. 19 Kadee knuckle couplers to it as the club I'm with has a compulsory Kadee coupler policy which is easier as can simply pull the NEM tension lock coupler out and insert an NEM Kadee coupler in than having to get the drill and hobby glue to retrofit no. 5 kadees with some trial and error which is still common with previous versions of the Scotsman that don't have NEM pockets. Definitely a great model, the only modification I had to make was to fit no. 19 kadees to it as well as regauge the wheels on both the loco and tender, except the pony wheels to comply with National Model Railroad Association standards gauge due to the loco derailing on my club's handbuilt points that were built to NMRA standards and after hearing over in America that it does derail on a lot of American points, particularly Atlas points, even the older versions, especially tender driver ones still do that. After some research showed that a lot of Hornby wheels didn't comply with NMRA standards, before regauging, the loco would only like Hornby which their points are not NMRA compliant, Peco points are fine and are NMRA complaint and other brands of HO and OO gauge trains around the world like them as well. Roco points the Scotsman has no problem with. After regauging, the loco seems to perform better on any points, particularly my club's handbuilt ones and possibly Atlas if I get the chance. Although the points will be a different story. Other than that, the Hornby Railroad A1 Flying Scotsman is definitely an excellent model, I'll even admit that I bought a second one to use for spare parts as well. I'm even surprised that the loco has lasted 3 years of putting up with a lot of wear and tear and still keeps going like a soldier from WWII without even giving up.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for all the info mate - I'm fairly sure that both versions have a 3 pole motor though - mine almost certainly does! £110 is an awful lot considering there's no tender pickups either! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@MrShepardDog Hornby follow a different standard which is Great Britain standard as they are mainly OO. NMRA standards is mainly for HO, mostly American, Canadian and Asian and also already being part of Australian. NEM standards is mainly for European models.
@steamier77552 жыл бұрын
@modeltrainlover3 kejwjma maybe your trackwork needs to be checked, also trains cannot go fast around tight curves due to the centrifugal force, even the slightest bump on straight track can derail a model train. I’ve run my Flying Scotsman model at the club at full scale 100mph and it has not derailed at all, especially on the slightest bumps on my club’s trackwork and also on their gentler curves.

I just scored a used Flying Scotsman set on Hattons with 4 coaches included for 110. Seemed reasonable to me in these times. Hopefully it's in good shape and runs well. Missing the 2 points from the set. I bought it partly for the 4 coaches, Perhaps I can use the track for a Christmas layout!

I have been able to advise him about the prices of model shops for these locos compared to Hornby and even Amazon. Hopefully Hornby will see sense in the future for these models

oo tornado or flying scot, tough choice but i prenatally see a couple options in saying we are sticking to hornby. there's the two hornby ranges and then there is train sets . now i say and train sets just because you get more for your money, well for the most part. Not sure if this is a one case scenario but at Argos you can get the "Tornado Pullman Express" with track, loco and coaches and erm for better words a cheap and nasty "controller" or you can get the railroad loco by its self and what i dont get is they are the same price. now if i was to compare the tornado and scot honestly id say it was down to the locos history both are remarkable and respectable in the history for Steam preservation but i dont see the justification of price gap, maybe its because of the public take for instance the one time there was a blue flying Scotsman (www.hornby.com/uk-en/forum/blue-flying-scotsman-in-premier-set-for-marks-spencer/?p=1) the price for it well you could say it's worth its weight in gold. back to the subject point its quiet hard to make a definitive answer, but i would personally say for your friend because he is starting out by the sounds of it to me i'd personally recommend the tornado pullman an Argos exclusive (and I'm assuming your friend Paul lives in the uk) simply because I think its the better value for money for someone who is starting in this hobby

Good review Sam - thanks. I have the TTS sound fitted, and she’s lovely. I was very fortunate to get her new from a local toy shop that was getting rid of all their Hornby stock, and managed to do a deal for just over £80. I’ve heard bad things about TTS sound for steam locos, but I’m pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sound. In general I agree with the pricing for the non sound Rail Road version being rather steep. Having said that the RRP for the sound version isn’t so bad when you consider the cost of the TTS sound decoder and speaker as a separate item.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Fred - blimey £80 is very good for the TTS version! Yeah I can't say anything bad about TTS either - it's always worked very well for me! Yeah this is true - but the TTS decoders can be bought for £30-£40 on their own, so it shouldn't be all that much extra! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@thebigboy-fr9bg2 жыл бұрын
I, in America, have this model, it didn't come with TTS sound, though, so it didn't come with power from the tender. It's still an amazing runner and I haven't had any issues with, other than when I bought it, in which the connecting rods got stuck on each other, but that hasn't happened ever since 2018. All in all, I would recommend this loco, whether it be with TTS sound or not, to anyone who wants to get into model trains.

Great review mate! Yeah I got one of these late last year and I'd have to agree, mine has tts so that's bonus but there's a few things that I would change ; the tender seems to sit a bit higher to one end, the smoke box door is a bit squint and the motor seems to speed up and slow down ever so slightly at higher speeds. All things I can manage but if the motor gives up then I'll no doubt be able to get a replacement easy enough. I've added real coal and done some light weathering to mind and she looks stunning. All the best mate --- Ben

They even have this train in the Train Sim app I remember driving it around while it's carrying passenger cars. And he even made his appearance in Thomas & Friends back in 2016. It would've been cool if there was a Hornby version of the Flying Scotsman that has 2 tenders. One tender for coal (LNER), and one tender for water (4472).

Sometimes I rewatch your reviews of locos I like to see them run and sometimes I forget what you rated them. And the whole rant at 15:03 really resonated with me. As a kid I loved Thomas, and they sold the set for about 80 dollars (63.42 pounds) , so my parents got me one for Christmas, but as I got into my teen years I wanted the real locos, but I couldn’t because the locos, rolling stock, and even buildings were so expensive. I don’t know about regular locos, but I remember I got Percy for just 40 dollars (31.71 pounds), and now I’ve recently saw that you’d be lucky to get a Thomas model for 80 dollars. That’s just sad. And it’s just gotten worse. So thank you for putting into words just how important it is to make model railroading affordable so people of all ages and incomes can be involved in the hobby.

Sam'sTrains but I do agree with you "rant" about Hornby's pricing and it putting people off, especially when you look at some of it and think "that's not even worth 3x that!" It does give model shops a big chance to shift units, but I don't think Hornby have much of a chance, especially with the likes of Hattons making their own products and Bachmann seemingly trancing them for quality and price, in many areas. I got this model January 2020 and it was terribly jerky in running. It has just had it's motor changed at Hornby in December 2020! But runs well now

I got one of these, removed the smokebox door, glued on a circular piece of card, glued a face on the card, glued on rectangular bits of card on the buffers, and repainted the whole thing It’s Gordon

Great video sam, did you know the a1s had a thrid cylinder under the smokebox which drove the first wheel set instead of the second

Thanks Oskar! Yeah it's a very clever Gresley design - I suppose it gave them all that power! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have the one out of their “train set” it is surprisingly similarly detailed. It is DCC ready, not tender pickups, (how does one go about fitting them?). Also the tender is connected by a peg on the engine that passes through a hole on the tender coupling. The boiler hand rails are simply just mouldings.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes this will be the same as the train set ones just with no tender pickups - they can be fitted, but it's quite a job! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks Sam it was good to see 4472 Flying Scotsman running on your track with bullman on the back :D I agree with you about the price its just crazy there is such a huge price ticket on lets face it what is supposed to be a toy train! I would just like to say it is not just little boys that like train sets some little girls do too :D Along with the grown up boys and girls !!! Me and my human companions were lucky enough to travel behind Flying Scotsman on the NYMR in march 2016 I posted footage of it recently. Thanks again Sam

Another informative thought provoking brilliant video Sam. When i hear or see the word HORNBY i drift of into a world of my own. I adore this hobby and have done since 1973. Is the A1 you have acquired a original tooled 1980's locomotive made to look a bit better for the market the engine is aiming at ? Yes i want to see new and younger people getting in to our obsession ( model railways ) but people have been saying since the Attari 77 that toy trains as it was back in those days would go out of fashion, but they are still here today. Yes Hornby have been in trouble for a long time but they are raising the game alot. On day BACHMANN might get it right. You separate the men from the boys from the price of his toys. The locomotive you have reviewed was for young man probably paid for by his parents with no insight and or knowledge of where to find the cheapest locomotive. You were totally correct about the price Hornby charge for that locomotive on their website. It's a rip off for a VERY VERY dated locomotive. Once again thank you Sam great video 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚅

Hello Sam’s trains. To answer your question, the DCC ready versions which is the one I have don’t have tender pickups, it only has loco pickups. However, the only advantage out of that is it makes setting up the loco and makes maintenance easier for myself as I don’t have to constantly plug and unplug the wire harness to the tender and accidentally break a wire if I needed to say test the motor after some general maintenance like lubricating for example. The DCC ready version only has a 3 pole motor which although may not be the best motor for some people, but it does the job and hasn’t failed me for 3 years so far, especially when it’s under the control of hyper junior members. The metal unstrung buffers are a good advantage over the fragile plastic damage prone buffers. The red and yellow railroad packaging for the railroad DCC ready Flying Scotsman product no. R3086 has been recently replaced with a presentable green packaging in recent times, but the model remains the same. Hopefully that answers your question on pickups.

If your on DCC in the running session how are you controlling multiple trains? And also I think this is the first time I’ve seen you unsatisfied with the price of a locomotive, and I totally agree

DCC allows you to run multiple trains at once, so that's how I did it! And yeah - this one did disappoint me :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I recently purchased the Railroad version and constantly got derailments on straight runs over express points. None of my other 40 plus engines have this problem.I was shocked to see how many people were having this problem when I went on the Hornby site. It appears to be a front bogey problem. Slowing down video footage shows this clearly. I am surprised you have not had this problem on your carpet set up Sam. Have to admit I am somewhat disappointed in the engine as this should not happen. Keep up the good work Sam.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that Simon - that doesn't sound right! Could you maybe upload a video showing the issue? I'd be interested to see it up close! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@simonevans18384 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains I have just completely changed my layout. I will get the engine out in the next couple of days and see if the new display throws up the same problem. I am using the same points etc. We will see. Lovely engine nevertheless less. Wish I had purchased an older version though with a bit of a pedigree. Any thoughts to the best Flying Scotsman out there (not expensive)?
@simonevans18384 жыл бұрын
Actually managed to get a run out tonight with the Flying Scotsman. Certainly much better with the new layout, which proves 'it's not always the engine'. The track is tighter barring a few wobbly bits here and there, but to be expected on a 12 ft x 6ft board layout.Over powerful in my opinion and on max speed still manages to derail one in three circuits. It really is powerful and like the D16's, far too fast for its own good. Take it down a notch (let's be realistic here) and it runs very well. The tender is too light in my opinion but when it runs well it runs very well. I'll be watching on Sunday and thanks for your feedback and interest. Still like to know your opinion on the best Flying Scotsman out there (within a sensible budget). All the best.
@donald_cope246 жыл бұрын
Nice review Sam! I have got one of these from the train set and it doesn't have any pickups in the tender. My Flying Scotsman has lasted for several years... and still looks brand new. I really want Hornby to make their locos cheaper so I and others can afford locos so you can pick specific locos and allow people to make lengthy trains and have different exiting trains. If you want to see bargain locos go to Budget Model Railways and they talk about prices. I don't bother with new Hornby locos I use Lima locos or older Hornby and Bachmann... But it is a good loco the Flying Scotsman..
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Donald - yeah that's quite typical of the non-dcc sound versions - which I guess I got lucky with! Using older locos is a good call though - they're super reliable too! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have had the hornby flying scotsman for 12 years now and ever since i have had it the quatering on the wheels has been out, i have taken it to be fixed 3 times but it still manages to still be out so when i run it it will work fine for a bit but then the pistons start clicking and it dosent run properly

Hey Sam! I just got the Hornby Flying Scotsman train set in the mail as a late Christmas gift. It’s really great! However the front coupling on the Scotsman doesn’t fit into the slot. It goes in but no matter how hard I try it doesn’t click in and just comes out. Is there anything I can do?
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын

I have a question about the Hornby Flying Scotsman but the train set. On Hornby's website they have one with a red box and one with a green box. Are they just separate versions or is the one with the green box replacing the one with the red box?

Yeah they are different versions - not sure about a green boxed one though?! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

This design was based on the Pensalvainia railroads k4 Pacific Easy was to tell difference between an a1 and a3 is the plates on the top of the smoke box around the handrail. If it has those plates it's an a3 if it doesn't have them it's an a1 because the superheated was too big for the smokebox Mine is now awaiting it's TRIRD set of rods (it is waiting in a siding with tender and rods removed) because it's bogie hits the walschearts gears hit off on 3rd radius curves and it doesn't even have tender pickups and before its tender broke so I had to modify my spere triang tender to run her with and the steps in front of the bogie both snapped off when the wheels launched themselves at them. On my rankings it got 28/50

If ever I bump into someone whose children want a model railway, I'll tell them to watch as many of your videos FIRST, including this one warning about price gouging on the Hornby website, before spending a penny. Oh, it might be a good idea to produce a video devoted to which model shops offer the best deals too. I think cash strapped parents will appreciate that! Indeed, if ever I have the chance to indulge and bring back some childhood memories, you'll be my first port of call before opening the wallet, though at my age, if I do indulge, I'd probably want to treat myself to some quality items. :) Nice to see someone being honest in their reviews!

Today I got my very first ever model engine. It was of the flying Scotsman which is why I’m commenting this on this video. I don’t know what company made it and it’s super beat up but I figured it’s still the flying Scotsman, one of the most iconic engines. Plus I got it for four bucks. It’s never gonna run but I’m glad to have it just to look at it. And I’m glad my first model engine could be one that’s super iconic.
