Another Classic. I have the same locomotive but made by Airfix circa 1980/81 with an of center ferret on a dart board ( early crest ) that green Patriot is gorgeous love the livery. Great video Sam 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🤩🚄🚅

Nice review Sam. I do like some of the old Mainline locos, I have several myself and given they are relatively old locos they are better than a lot of the news ones....Simon
@SamsTrains9 жыл бұрын
+Simon Young Absolutely! I've always said the same - they are fantastic despite their age! Thanks again, Sam

Just had to watch this review again, she is a great looking loco and I agree,well detailed considering the age of Mainline models.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
No problem mate, thanks very much for watching! Yeah, if you compare this to Hornby locomotives at the time, this is a massive step ahead! Cheers mate, Sam :)

Nice review Sam, yes you noticed the similar boilers on these engines. Both these are rebuilt versions with the Crewe built 2A boiler. I read that 2 boilers made it on to 2 Jubilees aswell (with some mods of course). The boilers took longer to repair than the chassis on scheduled overhauls, so to have some standardisation and a "pool" of 2A boilers meant a faster turn around. This means that boiler swaps were common back then. The LNER did it too, eg. the Flying Scotsman had several boilers in it's working life. Regards, Cliff.
@SamsTrains9 жыл бұрын
+janiceandcliff ahh thanks for the info! I wasn't sure whether mainline had just been lazy and used the same body or not! It's interesting that totally different classes of locos can share fundamentals such as boilers etc! Thanks again, Sam
@janiceandcliff9 жыл бұрын
+Sam'sTrains The Black Five is a similar looking loco, but this large class had it's own story. The early boilers were domeless with short fireboxes, the later boilers had domes and longer firebox. So to make a "pool" of spare boilers here, a number of class 5 chassis were altered to take either type. This info is taken from "Stanier Locomotives" by Brian Haresnape. The things that went on to keep the wheels rollin'.... : ) Regards, Cliff.

I have the LMS livery version of this and I know you always say Mainline need a good service, but most of my used Mainlines seem to work fine out of the box. A bit of a clean and lube and I think they're pretty awesome. Sorry Sam, but as a rule I prefer Bachmann over Hornby, with a few exceptions of course. Nice video as always mate.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gerry! Yeah that's true, with a little TLC they can be great runners! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@Sam's Trains : Bit of a late comment... these were first introduced in the 1979 Mainline catalogue. This loco would have been 36 years old at the time of this review. Now, of course, it'll be 42 years old.

I realized I bought a red one on a train show last year. It was released in the US back in the 80s.

They are ok until the plastic gears, wheel insulation axels split, they also used plastic insert wheel spokes that start to Bulge out over time trapping the valve gear, it best to go for a Bachmann chassis, or the complete Bachmann loco instead.??? Just done a DCC conversion split chassis 04, shunter ; this is an old Mainline chassis on rebranded Bachmann product, all the insulated wheel axels were split, but had not gone out of quarter, so a quick spot of Superglue sorted the problem, she now runs like a dream.....nice video mate...

Have a look online for 3D printed replacement gears. I got some from Shapeways 2 or 3 years ago and there are probably more people out there now who could make them.
@Olivers-trains2 жыл бұрын
Do you think it would be possible to rework the locomotives mechanism to use a more modern motor using a 3d printer?
@szabolcskovacs98942 жыл бұрын
I bought this train couple of days ago and this is my first Bachmann train set. I must to say, I'm really enjoying it. However, I noticed that your locomotive doesn't have the windows and mine has. I found it a bit strange. Thanks for the video 😊

Mainline was better than Hornby back in the day. They costed the same or cheaper and they had heaps more detail!

It's hard to believe these were available back in 1979. If it wasn't for the now infamous split chassis I would seek to pick up a lot more Mainline loco's, has this model got one? I have found the Mainline and even Lima put some nice detail in there loco's that Hornby often left out as they were still using a lot of old triang moulds at the time.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Rob, I'd like them a lot more if they had better mechanisms - yes sadly the only Mainline steamer not to have this is the N2, which is much better! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

My nameplate is the same with the extra text slightly blurry celebrating it's trip to Chicago fair in the 1930's. Also mine has 2 wires between tender and loco which i guess means it's DCC fitted?
