Unboxing the Tamiya 1/12 scale Lunch Box on the CW-01 Chassis

The Tamiya Lunch Box came out in 1987 and was the first vehicle to use the CW-01 Chassis. The original Lunch Box was 58063 and as this is a re-release of the iconic monster truck the kit number has changed to 58347. This kit is also the ONLY monster van that Tamiya has produced so far. Most monster trucks are just that...trucks. But for this model, Tamiya chose to go with a replica of a 1980's Dodge Van. I'm so glad they did! This Van in a hard body shell is incredibly detailed. I can't wait to hit the dirt!!

The Lunch Box is such a fun classic. I have never taken on out for a drive that didn't make me smile. they are so much fun to drive and it is a great kit to build. Everything in it goes together really well except for the rubber tubing on the shock shafts. Make sure to use a little grease in the tubing and shaft to make it easier to slide them on it. Without it it is a chore! other than that it is a great and fun build. Have fun and look forward to seeing the videos!

This a really easy and fun kit to build. It is not high performance, but it is not supposed to be. You can add bearings and also oil filled shocks. I do recommend this. Thoughts?

Agreed! I'm expecting it to be way more fun than a racing machine that's for sure. I always upgrade and recommend that the first, and immediate, thing you do is add ball bearings during the build process. The plastic bushings wear out and eventually create wear on the metal drive shafts. If you wait to replace the bearings you'll find that there will be a fair bit of "slop" so it's not worth waiting. For now I'll just use the stock shocks but upgrading to oil filled will make a difference I'm sure. Great ideas!

Lunch box gear box is bulletproof Blackfoot gears is garbage if you don’t have a mop ball diff

In the build process of both you can definitely see that the lunch box gear box is far superior. Back in the day when I had my first Blackfoot I think I probably didn't run it as hard as the only thing that gave me problems was the hex drive shafts which I had to replace once or twice. BUT...even just in how you piece together the gearbox it just feels very weak as a whole.
