F14 Back Stories and History.
The 2 seater Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy's air superiority fighter, tactical reconnaissance platform and its fleet defence interceptor . The F-14 replaced the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1974 and was replaced in 2006 by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. It appears in all Top Gun video games including Top Gun: Guts and Glory, Top Gun: Combat Zones and Top Gun: Hard Lock.
The aircraft first flew as far back as 1970 and deployed from Navy carriers in 1974 and was ultimately cancelled in 2006 with the advent of the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet. The F-18 was faster, more maneuverable, and more high-tech than the Tomcat, and emerged as a new generation of carrier-launched fighters.
The F-14s initially designed to counter Russian MIG fighters during the Vietnam War, and were then used against Iraqi planes by the Iranian Air Force during the Iran-Iraq war; they reportedly shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft while only 12 to 16 Tomcats were destroyed, according to a 2006 Air & Space Magazine report.
The F-14s are still used by the Iranian Air Force, and some have raised a question as to whether they were retired prematurely by the U.S. Navy. This raises an interesting question regarding technical progress. While there is clearly value in human decision making faculties adding to air attack with two-seater planes using a Naval aviator to support the pilot, the advent of newer sensor technology may have supplanted the need for a second person in the plane.

@@edwardcase Well... in a sense it is, but it's been overcome, proof being «the plane flyes». I just want to see how it's done mecaniquely and our friend here is just the one to show me. I have complete confidence in his extensive knowlege and expertise in this area. Plus... He's very interesting ! I tried to watch videos of «plane building» with music in the background. If I don't hear or see what's the mental processus going in the mind of the builder, there is no interest. I know how to build planes more or less. I want to know the thinking behind it and Jonathan is the only one who lets us in his mind process. And THAT is interesting ! So... thank- you Jonathan to let us take a ride in your mind and how you think! It's fun to see the wheels turning in your brain ! I can imagine you sitting before your model just thinking. I think that's one of my favourite schemes for the F-14. The red really pops and that F-14 will look so impressive either on the runway or screaming by on a low pass! Skymaster has picked up their game with their detailing/finishing. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Too bad it's a fake scheme for a F-14. This is the 50th anniversary scheme for VFA-102 and was only seen on their color bird FA-18F. The plane still looks amazing, I will be looking forward to seeing her take flight.

I was in an F-14 squadron while serving in the US Navy and we don't call it a nose cone, it's called a radome.

You may want to provide them some feedback. VFA-102 never flew Tomcats. VF-102 did. And they didn't place the squadron titles on the spine (Super Hornet style) but on the two fins underneath the engines nacelles.

The totally wrong thing is that Skymaster really screwed up on the plane markings. The Tomcat never had those markings. I was in VF-102 from 1981-84. The plane is marked "VFA-102" markings for the F/A-18F. That color scheme was for the squadron 50th Anniversary and was only applied to F/A 18's.

Tried to edit my other comment but it wouldn’t let me, wanted to add that while I like this paint scheme, I really love the Bounty Hunters paint job. Of course I might be a little biased too because the Bounty Hunters was the Tomcat squadron on board the USS Constellation when I was on the ship and it was the last deployment with the Tomcat for the Bounty Hunters as well as the last deployment of the Constellation. After the cruise, the Bounty Hunters transitioned to the Super Hornet and the Constellation was decommissioned.

My plane was a MiG-23 MF, a model that one day I would like to have in scale, even if it couldn't fly. In our tactics classes and training, they showed us videos of American aviation and the F14 Toncat was always a dream for me. Today I would like to know what the price is of those models that you exhibit and what is the way in which they can be acquired, in our country there is no market for these hobbies. There's an old expression - you can tell the men from the boys by the price of their toys :-) in my case, the best expression is if you have to ask how much it cost you can't afford to buy it :-) What an incredible looking model, awesome detail. Not only would it take tremendous skill to fly, its so big you might have to have FAA approval then contact local Air Traffic Control for clearance :-) That A-10 in the background was awesome too. Says VFA-102. All tomcats belonged to VF's not VFA's. Also 102 is the Diamondbacks and the external tanks say Grim Reapers which was VF-101 not VF-102. You'd think they could get those details right lol

Was surprised they had VFA instead of VF on the jet but I think they must have converted the Super Hornet paint to this jet. You definitely got the wrong squadron's external tanks though - Grim Reapers are VF-101. They should swap those out.

WOW. What a nice problem to have a lot of aircraft to build this winter. Really liking the Top Gun F-14. This is my second favorite aircraft that you will build. The first is the thunderbolt. But all great kits from Skymaster. I did a training mission with these aircraft, they marc targets for us. I liked the wings when they were swept back. Pretty cool. Can't wait to see these flown this summer. I hope. Take care.

Older video, but need some help on balancing the "Dancing Wings Pt17 Stearman Balsa ARF PNP". The diagram shows the balance 1100 mm back from the leading edge. But the diagram shown is of the bottom wing with the ailerons. But should it be from the leading edge from the top wing. I am sure it is. Because mine is nose heavy with out battery, when using the bottom wing. Please advise? Thanks as always! Ron

Hello Ronald. I suspect they show it this way as the general tendency is to balance the aircraft upside down? Either way it should be back from the leading edge.. If you do a search on some of the forums about that airicraft you may be able to find out some info. Maybe check on RCUNIVERSE

Quite a few locations but generally right from the manufacture. It's typically a made to order scenario. from time of order the airframe takes 3-5 months then it's the build of the airciiraft.

Hiya, All the markings on the jet is the "death Rattlers" not "grim reapers", the fuel tank marking is wrong. I guess you could paint it over, or maybe get the correct one from spymaster....

Thanks Marco. That's an easy and a tough one. Easy part is get in touch with me via email and I can sort it out. Tough part is all of the skymaster prices are going up 15-25% as of January 1, 2022. I do have a lead on a new F18 fresh out of the box for a great price if someone is interested.

Love the Grim Reapers channel here on YT, some extremely fun simulations of both historic and potential battle scenes. When I first saw the wing-roots I was a little disappointed thinking it was going to be a fixed wing F-14 model. Then when you unwrapped the fuselage and showed the wing-boxes it was "YES! A swing-wing!"

hey brother. first off thanks for the great content watched every one of your videos. second. if i wanted to build a skymaster can i use large EDFS in it? or is there not an EDF setup powerful enough for power to weight ratio for them?

check out BVM Models. They have some high power edfs and conversion systems

Thanks so much for watching! Yea there is always the possibility of installing EDF Units. Generally you would want to reduce some of the weight where you can to try to get it as light as possible. If your tanking a Turbine setup plane and converting it, be prepared for a fair bit of work and reorganizing. BUT. That's all part of the fun!

So is this a half scale or 1/4 scale pilotable aircraft or just a remote controlled one ? If this is actually pilotable by a human then thats awesome but so far it looks like just a model or a RC plane then thats just a waste of my time so far and dare I say stupid.
